Bally Frontier Pinball Rules Explained
I have one of those
Yes @OGSERB has it right. The woofer motion we see before the music is a very low frequency, probably not directly detectable to a human (at least at the playback level we seem to experience in this video), however it can have an indirect and deleterious effect on the sound quality of higher frequencies that are important to us, both because it saps available amplifier power and it increases woofer cone distortion. A subsonic filter sometimes, also called a rumble filter, would get rid of it or at least reduce it significantly.
Such an ingenious scoring system.
This is an odd game
Hi Noah, thanks for sharing. Is there a writeup on how to add the flashers on this game? It adds a lot of life to it.
Guessing here, but it would be something along these lines. You'd have to find someone with an actual game that has the rom w/ the flasher programming embedded in it, then have them copy the rom for you. Then wire up some flashers and tie the wiring chain to the transistor on the driver board that drives them? I don't have the game anymore, so I'm not really gonna be any help here. If memory serves this was serial number 427 or so, so probably towards the end of the production run of 500. Guessing they added the flasher feature set later on in the run? The bonus collect sounds are slightly different, and there's a few less GI on the playfield.
@@noahpdavis Great that helps a lot. Thanks!
DONT LOSE THE BALL
Subsonic filter would eliminate that.
FireBall Remake
Es así todo el video¡?
There is a one million shot, on the top left kick out. You have to max out the bonus, AND advance to 5X. But very satisfying.
Make that 2 Million, or 1,975,000. Bonus maxes at 395k x 5 for max bonus meltdown. It gets pretty crazy.
Very impressive. First time playing this machine?
is the lag between counts normal?
Yup the big pauses are at millions, when the bell would be ringing (if I left it connected - ha).
Man...I wish I had your skills! Fun to watch!
great game. pro moves. like a boss. glad u posted it. never seen a Frontier before this.
So it's still Shoot the Holes. :) but in this one you gotta shoot the top hole every time you shoot the left hole. :)
I remember the old Beat the Clock game show on TV. It was hosted by Bud Collyer. I do not remember any one beating the clock.
Ha - bell is factory! It's just disconnected most of the time.
Did you just add a bell to the flasher?
The layout of the playfield is so random on this one.
Its that tempting 1,000,000 shot, that can be collected time and time again..pardon the pun. The time element is harsh, and adding time is very difficult, when you are done to 0. 10 seconds is nothing, and the 25 second setup, is not easy. But a great game, thankfully I;ve played in several places in the UK, back in the 80's and 90's
Another really good first ball! At the end of the video, score around 2.5 M, I'm guessing?
Wow, great game, fast, and good playing too. Huge first ball. Ouch, then two house balls! A mediocre final ball to finish it off. Good game though. I'm guessing the score was around 1.5 M?
how old?
Well he just turned 4 - this vid is a year old , so he was a few months past 3. He hasn't been into pinball at all lately though.
Just getting ready for nw tournaments, thought it'd review some game play. ;-)
Noah, how does one contact you? I'm interested.
4:01 - "Dammit!" He had the clock stopped, but that green blinky thing starts it up again. Oops!
Hey Noah... Do you guys preview all of the games like this for your tournies? Nice idea
Mahesh! I used to bring an oddball game every year to Showdown and because it was generally something people weren't familiar with, I'd do a video like this. Also, I remember searching for vids of BTC, Lady Luck, Frontier etc and youtube didn't have much gameplay footage so I tried to do them of most of the games I had that didn't already have videos done.
sucky play man
Great display of control and skills. Google "Tom Wible pinball DVD" to learn these skills.
Very good game. shame I never played the table in my life.
Can' tell you how much I enjoyed that. Thanks.
This machine seems to have a somewhat similar layout to Fathom. How do they compare? Which do you like better?
Tap passing is easiest on early Bally SS games (late 70's through early/mid 80's). It's possible on some EM's, but generally impossible, or very difficult on sys11 and later games.
Thanks for the answer :) Is this possible with all flippers or is it just the Bally flipper design? When I watch other videos of people playing Williams machines I don't see this being done, even though they also seem to be good players.
I am not the player. Just up late at night and felt compelled to answer.
It's called a "tap pass" where the flipper switch is not fully depressed, so only a minute surge of current is actuating the switch for a split second
I don't know that much about pinball, but how do you make that neat shot at around 17 seconds to pass from the left flipper to the right? I thought flippers were either fully on or fully off.
I know it was built on top of Olivers Home Rom set, so 6/7 dig is switchable and free play is an option. There's a GI short in the PF somewhere, which I have yet to track down, so I haven't actually gotten to mess with it much.
Also is 6 versus 7 digit scoring DIP switch selectable?
Do you know if there's any DIP switch changes using this home ROM set? (Free play or other options?)
Easily one of the best early SS (solid state) machines ever made!
That game looks like fun to play
now I want this game! lol great job explaining it!
want to sell it for double your money?
I know this is an old video but I noticed the Left Sling was rapid firing which it should not be. Easy fix is just to bend the contacts behind the sling rubber behind just bend then slightly forward and hit it with the ball and see if it rapid fires again.
We had one in 1986 in our arcade! Awesome to see that one in action again after so many years =) I managed to get the key and reprogram it by the internal keyboard...
One of the most underrated games of the 1980's it's a sleeper for sure and a blast to play. Not many were made a hard game to find. Once you play it you will be hooked.
Enjoyed the overhead view! recently bought a frontier game myself. I did send you a message also - M
Man..I gotta shop out my FB II..Your's plays FAST! Nice!!
