DIY Harley ---- (Part 18) Harley Done, Starting and Final Timing!!!! HD Harley
This is a 1977 Harley Davidson Ironhead.
Forgot to mention in video that you need to bring the rpm up to 2400 to 2500 when doing the timing like I did. 2000 rpm is ok if your in a area where they have a noise lvl in the day but you may have to adjust the carb not always the case but I do recomend driving to a secluded spot to do this if you think you will have issues with neighbors and noice ordinaces.
One more video to come of the first time startup after finishing putting back together.
A little info of what I encountered when putting the bike back together and some tips.
Showing you some basics of what and how to tear it down to make thing a bit easier for you in the long run.

This is a 1977 Harley Davidson Ironhead Torque head bolts in stages 15, 30, 45, 58, 68 ...... Book calls for 65 max but if its cold you have to take into account for the metal shrinkage so going above 65 to around 70 wont hurt anything it will allow for expansion. Now you do not have to do so many stages like I did you can do something like 25, 45, 65 which will most likely work just fine. Show...

Manifold should of gone on first before anything was tightened so everything rotates to conform to the manifolds seal, preferably using the superior s&s clamps, just saying.

why…people buy fun things and want to learn. so they hit the youtube lol. motorcycles are about fun how ever you the owner decides you want to have it. and some people get bikes to learn this stuff. As a mechanic i study manuals, videos and also go off the knowledge of more experienced people. youtube is partially about the sharing of knowledge. if you cant figure out how to adjust it. come here. learn how to do it yourself. now you know. people like you suck.

  • @billvandyne4685

Good video--thanks! One way of determining a consistent amount of adjustment among the pushrods is to tighten them up with your fingers, as you've done, and then from that point back off by 1/4 to 1/2 flat. This makes for a slightly looser adjustment . However, his is a good way for ironheads as the adjustment tightens up when the engine warms up.( For aluminum head Harleys, it is the opposite--the adjustment loosens with heat). I may have missed it in the video but this should only be done when the engine is ice cold.

I was always told to leave the head bolts and jug nuts a little loose and then put on the intake to get the intake perfect first which also helps clock the heads but way easier to get intake sealed up nice.

I don't know why Machine shops waste all that money on precision instruments when all you have to do is jiggle the piston and run your finger in the cylinder. Why do they charge for boring cylinder when you can just hone it until you can stuff a .010 oversized piston in it. Wow, just wow.

This is a direct quote from the official Harley-Davidson -1970-78-Sportster-XL-XLH-XLCH-XLT-1000-Service-Manual: "The front chain should be checked every 2000 miles for correct adjustment. Check chain adjustment through oil filler opening located near the top of the chain cover. A correctly adjusted front chain should have free up-and-down movement in the upper stand midway between engine and clutch sprockets as follows: Front chain adjustment: 5/8 to 7/8 in. chain slack with cold engine; 3/8 to 5/8 in. chain slack with hot engine. Check adjustment at the tightest point on sprockets, found by rotating sprockets." In other words, set the chain tighter when the engine is hot and looser when it is cold to allow for component heat expansion.

I have nothing to bitch about doing it in my garage. I have a 1980 iron i am turning into a chopper. Thanks for inspiring me to do so. i just between last night and today 1/29/2021 i watched the whole play list. I truly enjoyed it. Once again Thank You P.S. the bike looks great.

Nice video. Another way to determine which cylinder is front and which one is back, look at top fins of cylinders. Those nicely radiused cutouts of partial top fins are for the exhaust pipes. With cylinders positioned correctly so pushrods are to the left, then check out top fin cutouts to determine front cylinder from back cylinder. The side of cylinders without top fin radiused cutout is for intake manifold.

Subscribed. I'm tearing down my '79 Ironhead this winter; top end for sure, maybe bottom if the crankshaft's as rattly as it sounds, so I'm probably going to get through everything you put up here sooner or later.
