Ep 63 - Cape Romain Lighthouses
It is not often that a lighthouse is built to replace an old tower, only for both to remain in service (and not as range lights)! This is the case for the Cape Romain Lighthouses, very different in color, stature, and light characteristic, but only a few yards apart! Listen in to this episode to hear about their exciting history and how you can visit them today.

Amazing episode! I’d love to see you guys talk about Crisp Point Lighthouse in Newberry, MI it is my favorite lighthouse ever!😂 also it would be really cool to hear you talk about the lighthouses at Apostle Island National Lakeshore, there are 9 of them I believe which is the most in any national park unit in the states.. I know Devils Island Lighthouse has some amazing history along with Michigan Island Old and New Lighthouses, and Raspberry Island Lighthouse! I don’t know a ton about the others.. but I’m sure they also do!

Thank you! We will definitely talk Crisp Point and Also the Apostle Islands. I remember the name Raspberry Island Lighthouse, we touched on it briefly when we were discussing booking a trip to visit lighthouses. There looks to be some beautiful sea-kayaking in the Apostles, too. Thanks for listening! - Vince

@@thelighthouselowdownpodcast yes! I visited for the first time recently! You guys should totally visit there if you get the chance.. I didn’t do the sea kayaking but it would be amazing.. but in the summer they have boat tours where they take you out to both Raspberry Island Lighthouse and Michigan Island Lighthouses, they have rangers there that give tours, also on they have a Grand Tour Cruise where you don’t get off the boat but as long as the lake is calmer, they take you out to see Devils Island Lighthouse which is super super cool! If you want to learn more about them, The Lake Superior Podcast has an amazing episode where they talk to the keeper at Raspberry Island lighthouse! I believe it’s Season 2 Episode 16.. I just found your podcast late last night and I’ve already binged like 5 or 6 episodes! You guys are amazing, funny, and easy to listen to! Keep up the great work! I was the Light Station Keeper here for 14 months during COVID- I dealt with running out of water & the submarine cable failing so no power for 2 months & weather destruction. Thank you for this episode! This Light Station is the great love of my life. I have so many little historic anecdotes that I'm screaming over here. The gangway leading from the Boat house to the Island was burned in that fire- the gravity hose would have used the Islands water supply up as well because there has never been plumbing from the Mainland to East Brother. Willards hands were burned up while he was trying to snuff out the fire as it crawled up the gangway & headed for the Island. Lucretia Edwards spearheaded the historic preservation status to protect it from being razed down & the current boat used to transport guests is named after her. The asbestos siding inadvertently acted as a shield to take the brunt of the weather deterioration & when removed, revealed the original gingerbread siding. On occasion we have had to pay for water to be barged & pumped into the Cistern. This happened while I was there. It was costly & complex. Both fog horns are active- but the smaller quieter one that shouts at West Brother is every 30 seconds & a nice part of the soundtrack of the terrain. The historic one is blown to delight the guests in the morning before they go back to the Mainland. Walter Fanning, his sister Emma & mother came to live at the Light Station with is grandparents during the Spanish Influenza "and so escaped the flu". The Stenmark era has so many fascinating stories & the road to the Harbor where you take a boat to the Island is named after them. The Keepers Quarters was once a schoolhouse for the Stenmark Children- 2 of which were born during their tenure at the Station. Captain Stenmark had to row to San Quentin to fetch a doctor as that was the closest doctor then. Imagine if it was dark & storming! The Bed & Breakfast getaway includes a 4 course gourmet meal- the Keepers are required to have gourmet cooking skills- there is no standard menu as each Keeper brings their own menu. In addition to a Game room, there is also a Horseshoe pit. A wedding is an extraordinary task & is up to the Keepers if they want to deal with the extra work. Only about 30 people. Big long process for hiring Keepers- I served on the Board for 10 years & the average turn over is 2 years but they can stay longer if they choose- the pay is UP TO $140k. The work is non-stop & the schedules are tight & quite subject to the weather & tides. I have endless pictures & history on my girl. If you ever do a follow up- I'd love to help.

Hi James! We actually could not find that information either. The Brazilian Navy is now the only ones who interact with the lighthouse - while they would probably have an answer for the height, I'm not sure how I would suggest contacting them. I'm sorry we can't get you the answer!
