    Have an FM80 controller that fried the FETs as yours did. I don't know how because I was some 300 miles away when it happened. Bought a replacement unit FM80. Got hold of Outback and they wanted almost within $100 of a new unit to repair the burned one. Looked up the numbers on the FETs, purchased replacements (13 of them) for about $65, replaced them myself and put the repaired unit back in service. That was over two years ago and it's been running reliably ever since. And I now have a backup (the new unit) on site. Of course I neglected to mention that I'm a retired electronics tech. It was a real pain even then. The ground and /or power planes on the PCB really suck the heat away from a soldering iron.

    We have a similar Outback Power setup. The problem with the FM80/60 is that the absolute PV in is only 150V, meaning that it's hard to find a protection device between that and the PV max output. Maybe not where you are, but we get -40'c in winter which pushes Voc higher... Our nominal 48v panels have pushed 105v max.

    • @TheWickerShireProject
      @TheWickerShireProject 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's insane cold! I've seen maybe +25 volts in winter. So My normal 109v goes to 135v at most VOC. It's probably much higher without the solar charger connected.

    Too bad about the FM80 but as you said, you can fix them with patience. I own a FM60 picking it up from a recycle form for cheap! On VE controllers, they are nice but you WON"T be able to repair them! Anything above the 20A version uses an internal LET fuse and to tear them apart takes a miracle in heat (300 +) and even then there are a lot of surface mount features so again, a normal person cannot fix. The nice thing with the VE is the VE network that allows you to dynamically increase charging capacity provided you split your arrays to match the capacity. I run six VE controllers and yes they do sometime lock up. I also run midnight solar surge protection and so far no issues with near hit lightening strikes on my arrays

    When I bought my 4000 watt high feq inverter I really only needed 2000 watts or less. I will rarely pull 3400 watts , maybe a welder. However, 1500 watts is the normal I used. Lesson is over build your system and it should last way longer.

      I cannot trust high frequency square mods. At least from everything i've bought is cheap thin Units with lies printed on them of their rating. Our Low frequency 6,000watt / 18,000watt 15 sec power clip AIMS Inverter Only goes weird for 2 secs if the big 10k BTU AC kicks on while we have the microwave or coffee maker on at the same time. Power is not interrupted but, we get a warning chirp from the inverter letting us know we are pushing its limits.

It was bulky and reliable, but after 10 years, I'm glad that they updated to a newer inverter and battery solution, though it was a bit of a pain to set up with WiFi. It's giving better information than you could ever get from the Outback, in a better-presented way.

  •  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Lots of people are switching to the Victron or other systems if they are not deeply tied into a different brand.. I am heavily invested into Outback mainly because they are US made/based or at least they were.. The setup here includes 2 Flexmax80's, each controlling 3.6kw of Solar-World panels made in Oregon, 2 Radian inverters totaling 12kw, 30kw LiFePo4 battery bank that replaced a 5 year old L-16 battery bank and a Mate3s system controller.. The Radian inverters are pretty dated and I believe out of production now so sometime way down the road support will end and a big breakdown will have me searching for new devices.. For me I would fix the damaged FM-80 as it is one of the best in the 150v class.. A cheap and not to bad way to protect from surges/spikes is to get some MOV components that are fairly cheap and bridge them between the combiner lugs and ground and or the breaker input and outputs and ground.. You can get them for less than 50 cents each from any of the large part houses and they have a proven track record of working.. Surge arrestors like the Midnight Solar or LAR are in common use but do cost quite a bit and have that UL and NEC approval if you have to get inspected. The FET's in the FM-80 may be unmarked or have a brand part number but there are a few sources that you can get a viable part number for them.. I would worry that there may be other damage on the board like to the drivers and IC controller but until you rip it apart you won't know for sure.. Worst case you could send the board in for repair.. I have hope that the new owners of Outback come out with a more feature rich controller in the future but I can access my system with wireless networking which is more secure than Bluetooth..

      Killer system and fantastic read! I'm all about simplicity and cost. Less I have to diagnose or repair or replace. I'll look into optional Lightning protection. RIP Flexmax! 😢😢😢 Even the Outback can't stand against a lightning strike. We get a lot of lightning here in Destin. Some storms are like a war zone with hard ground strikes. It really gets the heart racing sometimes. C'mon TH-cam money! Fund a new system! 😊😊

    • @TheWickerShireProject
      @TheWickerShireProject 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So It survived a lightning strike! It ran for another 7 months after at 65% solar capacity. That's how rugged it is. I cannot stress how much it is worth to install a Pro lightning arrester type product in the DC breaker box out near your panels. Obviously you have to ground bond all panels together and set them to a grounding rod on a solid copper 10 gauge ( minimum ) wire. The Victron is a beast! Ultra Efficient and much cheaper and has Bluetooth! <- Sign us up and I did! We will be buying the LCD plug and play screen for the charger as well. $32 nore and my daughter can watch the power and voltage readings alerting me to possible shut downs if there is no sun for days and days on end.

    • @TheWickerShireProject
      @TheWickerShireProject 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I thought I dropped a comment! The flex max is 100% repairable. I'm not going to struggle over throwing parts it at. I'm sure at Outbacks HQ's they can plug in a diagnose reader and see whats knocked out with whatever error codes come up. When these units go its mostly the power mosfets or the control board.

    What is mppt?

    • @TheWickerShireProject
      @TheWickerShireProject 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      OK Solar lesson. Pwm ( Pulse width Modulation ) small cycles that grab energy on a clock cycle. It works but has voltage limits. Old technology. MPPT = Maximum Power Point tracking. This allows a Higher voltage to be used with a Lower voltage bank converting high voltage down to lower voltage. So when this happens you get more amps. Amps = better charging. MPPT computer sweeps finding the best conversion rates of voltage to amps. The lower the voltage comes down with Mppt the higher the amps go up supercharging your system. This how electricity works.

Just make sure you have the barrels on a platform or help to dump them. Once the bulk is out you can use the remainder to feed the lawn. As a brewer we just make a Brandy out of it. Its safe to assume its loaded with a stabilizer like potassium sorbate. Dump what you can carry into the pail. I love those! We just sourced a few. I want 100's of them! Perfect size to grow in. As we add compost every year, we can build up the soil layer and feed our microbes that feed our plants. Being plastic less water loss of cloth grow bags. Almost anything can be grown inside them. You my love have a fantastic resource for gardening ( Tub beds ). 👍

      Info contained is pretty solid. I dislike spending money to get a garden going. So much free material on hand around all of us to start what nature intended us to do. Gather collect and grow.

    The expired milk is a cool little tip!

    • @TheWickerShireProject
      @TheWickerShireProject 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So the calcium never goes away and it's in water soluble form. Its not for the plants directly until the fungi and soil microbes do their magic. Also a bucket load of beneficial bacteria in the liquid ( hence the spoiling sour smell. ) And milk isn't cheap so why dump it down the drain? Also many minerals and vitamins packed into milk as well. Major source of food for your symbiotic unseen microbiology world to help plants do better. ERNIE! 🥰

      Right so it doesn't do anyone any good falling off the tree's onto the ground. <- Fallen leaves are a gold mine not commonly seen by the normal eye unless your a gardener!

      We're all on a tight budget and spending too much when we do not have to ( On a Garden ). Using only what plants really need from materials abundant and locally sourced is the prime Ideal situation we all have around us. Anyone can grow food. God provides everything we need just outside our door step to do this.

      Hey Mike! We got the Fall garden in. I think we can pull some of it off! This summer killed us. I can show you more basil than your heart desires but, for winter storage the cupboards are bare. Yeah our pepper surprised us as well as all beans and corn. You know about the melon fiasco... OOF!
