Learning to Love Games | Ghost Squad
In another break from playing Super Mario Galaxy 2 I play another light gun game, Ghost Squad. This is a fantastic port of the arcade game on the Wii with responsive controls and a lot of fun. Relatively cheap too if you can get your hands on it.

I was taking a break from Super Mario Galaxy 2 recording some soothing lightgun games on the Wii when there was breaking news from Nintendo, which I cover in the most basic way possible. Enjoy some bad House of the Dead 2 gameplay and my not very descriptive or in depth thoughts on the Nintendo Switch 2s long awaited reveal.

What started as me messing around with an old save continues as I push on further into Super Mario Galaxy 2. Yoshi makes an appearance, Bowser Junior makes himself known and most importantly the game continues to remind me its one of the best games I've ever played.

So I mentioned in an earlier video my WiiU gamepad was suffering from drift, I finally decided to do something about the problem and bought a new pair of sticks for it & replaced them. Here is a documentation of the repair, without any talking, this certainly isn't a video showing you how or advising you to to do it but I will say it was easier than I was expecting.

As rumours swirl around the release of a second Switch I go back and play some games on the much maligned predecessor to the Switch the WiiU. Most of the games I play are bits of history that wouldn't work on other machines and thats what makes this console so fascinating to me. Its a wonderful, flawed machine and spend an hour (if you've got it) watching me appreciate it.

    27:56 The Wii U discs have a very smooth, round edge compared to DVDs and Blu-Rays. I wonder why they chose to design them that way.

      @learningtolovegames 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I wonder why the discs are like that, the only thing I could think is that as it plays Wii games too it’s a way to differentiate between the discs. Not sure what the benefit would be but the WiiU is a charming string of strange design choices

    If you like this, I recommend trying We Ski on the Wii. Oddly, they didn't go for the pun in the title. That game has a more open environment, challenges, etc. If you have the Wii Fit board, the game supports that control method as well.

    Interesting to see this game being played on the channel, as I've owned this game back on the N64 and played it a lot. Sadly yeah, the AI does rubberband like no tomorrow and doesn't slow down one bit when you're falling behind which is best exemplified with how Nancy was being able to stay ahead throughout the majority of the Night Highway course, but it's a minor gripe and I still love this game and it's visual character designs and soundtrack a lot. Some things I'd like to point out though: - At the 3:10 part, you actually didn't hit all three of the opponents with the single bomb blast radius hit. If you look closely, Tommy actually did the diagonal-held stunt animation and didn't finish it in time causing him to tumble upon hitting the ground. - There's actually 3 kind of default stunts you can do with the control stick and the amount of money you get is dependant on which direction you hold the control stick in and the animation plays out. 100G for up/down vertical, 120G for left/right horizontal, and 150 for any diagonal input. The higher payout ones do take longer to finish. You can also gain an additional amount with a board grab from any of the c-buttons while you jump/do a stunt and longer you hold it down the more you get, but release it in time. And lastly there's special stunts for each character with a high payout and blue particle effects that requires specific control stick inputs before releasing the jump button but aside from a few noted in the manual, you have to figure those out yourself. - At 7:40 it was highly amusing to watch, but the in-game track item poles have this weird property jank to them where upon the dog shop owner logo falling on the ground it acts as a solid object until it's finished rising up again fully. You don't crash into it but it does slow down your momentum big-time. - On that same note, the Night Highway course isn't the best for the Alpine Board which you used, given it has very bad steering stats and this course is riddled with narrow passages where you can easily fall off and sharp turns to bump into walls. (The purchasable level 2 and 3 versions of the boards give slightly better speed and turning stat increases to said board.) - The character face sprite on the course progress bar turning blue indicates that character being afflicted with a ghost, which slows him/her down. - And the longer you hold the A button down, the higher you jump. You can actually use this to jump over projectiles the opponents will shoot at you, but it requires good timing and knowing when the projectile is about to hit you since the ! mark above your head isn't the most accurate. Hope these tips help in case you ever feel like playing this game again. 👍

      @@learningtolovegames that's an interesting observation. In what ways do you see it as different to Double Dash?

    • @learningtolovegames
      @learningtolovegames ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattsephton the karts feel a bit too gripped to the track for me, not as much agency on where they go compared to Double Dash (much better than 64 though). Also the graphics are all a bit soft compared to the Arcady look of double dash. It’s a lot of nostalgia on my part I’m sure. I played a lot more Double Dash.

    I think you can hack the level-up system by f'ing up the ground like you did around the monument then constantly trying to level it. It never gets level because of all the buildings and walls nearby, so the humans are consistently ask you to level the ground, rewarding you with lots of hearts.

    I'm not one of those who repeat the mantra 'Japanese covers are always better' before I go to bed, but the Japanese cover looks dynamic, colorful, and more intense than the European cover and portrays a way more saturated experience than what happens in the game even though it literally states what you do on the cover. You golf on streets. There's nothing super fancy about the environments: no floating platforms, no giant fuzzy-headed anime mascots that score big points if clobbered, no giant monsters, no special laser or robot power-ups even! It's just golfing in city environments where the normal everyday objects almost troll you in the way they interfere with shots. I have to look into this one more even though it looks really simple. It's like a minigolf course with no frills.
