Finally... after almost a year since purchase, Lost Pearl is close to ready for departure. Composting toilet (C-Head) and secondary fridge installation are just part of the many projects that I'm trying to complete. Then it's time to head to the Sea of Cortez!

This is part two of my re-powering a Hardin 45 sailboat. On part one I was able to get the engine mounted on the transmission and some of the marine parts installed. Now I have the final parts on hand and time to get her running!

Lost Pearl’s new engine finally arrived and in this episode I set about getting it installed. There are a bunch of hiccups that prevent me from getting it fully installed into the engine bay at the boatyard so I have to do the final mounting to the transmission myself on a rock and roll mooring ball. Thanks to GnT Sailing for the additional footage.

Beautiful Camera work along with the music choice. What kind of drone are you using for those shots off the bow? That self tacking Stay sail is nice as well. It looks like you are set up for some adventure!
@@SailorEricP thanks! No drones were harmed in the making of this video, lol. I use a 360° camera on a 3m long pole. I lash the pole to the bow pulpit as just a clamp isn’t strong enough to prevent the pole from drooping. Definitely off on an adventure, since that video I’ve sailed 3 years in Mexico and am currently in El Salvador en route to the Panama Canal
Also not sure but we met at this mooring. I collided with your boat on dingy at night. I had Jeanneau -Sabai back there. Do you remember?

@@captainrus4780 hello and good morning from El Salvador! I purchased the new C240 from a distributor just south of LA. I’ll see if I can find the contact info.

@@OnnoKok I would appreciate it. I'm trying to make a decision between Beta or go with Isuzu. But after watching your videos I learned it's not exactly a replacement and it makes me think. I got a quote from Beta 60(56hp) -$19000
So can I mounted my old WV Golf 3TDI engine in to my seilboat?
@@CenturionPrimipilus it’s certainly possible I suppose. Modern car engines have a lot more electronic sensors and controls etc. that might not be best suited to the marine environment. Also you would have to deal with all the aspects of making it a marine engine, raw water cooling system, freshwater coolant system, exhaust and intake manifolds, mating to the transmission etc. It would probably cost more than just buying a used marine engine.
@@OnnoKok Regarding the power and speed, wouldn't it be higher, or do the boats actually have a design maximum speed?!
@@CenturionPrimipilus yes, at least displacement boats do. It’s known as hull speed. It’s the most efficient speed in which a given hull length can travel through the water. For Lost Pearl that’s about 7.5 knots. The prop also plays a large role in that as well and needs to be mated accordingly to the engine so as to not over task it or conversely, be to slow through the water. What sailboat do you have that needs a new engine?

@@CenturionPrimipilus well I believe that boat normally only has a 9 hp Yanmar. It’s a sailboat not a speedboat. A vw tdi would be way over powered for that size of boat.
I have an 82 Hardin that I bought in SD a couple of years ago. I’m currently reinstalling the Lehman 80Hp so I appreciate your videos. Funny because I had similar experiences with both the tow boat Tony, and Kohler Craft (may be different spelling). Anyway look forward to seeing you out there, I’m leaving LA for Central America, and then west to French Polynesia next February hopefully. Cheers, cool videos. Thx

An alternative to original style boat motors is an air cooled Chinese diesel. You save a lot of weight and money. Reliability is so much better without salt water cooling. I have the smallest 168F diesel, and it is superior for keeping the battery charged and small output to an existing prop. There are a variety of larger sizes too, but I encourage boaters to shrink horsepower. Tips: Mount it on a thick aluminum plate. Avoid lowest idle and zooming over 2000 RPM. Watch oil consumption during break in as it will be very high. My 20 MM shaft wants an inch adapter to fit a seven inch pulley and a drive coupler.
I haven’t heard of these Chinese diesels you speak of. Air cooling would be tricky as there is no easy way to vent the heat on my boat. Interesting concept though
@@OnnoKok Sichuan Sifa MB168F. It has top quality castings, steel gears, and meticulous measurements. Air cooling? Dry hot air. Open the front hatch. Open the companionway. Run a fan. A small price to pay, to satisfy the gods of reliability and lightness.

😆 We had the dog aboard and Rob wanted to avoid too many overnights. There were also weather window issues with a hurricane off towards Bermuda.

You've done a lot of good work on your boat. Spent more than you wanted but, that's how boats are. Just curious; without hauling her out, do you know the actual condition of the bottom, the cutless bearing and the propeller ? Seems like you may be setting yourself up by not looking at those now prior to your departure. Sorry if this sounds negative; just being realistic especially since the previous owner was not necessarily transparent with you about the engine. Safe travels.....
Hi! Thanks for watching and commenting, nice to know someone does watch these. lol. After sailing down the baja and cruising for a month I did do a haul out in Mazatlàn. I had new bottom paint done and checked things over. The cutlass was replaced a year later during a haul out for hurricane season.
how did you attached it on the hull? would like to see how you did that?
Good day and thanks for watching. The ladder is attached to the hull via steel bars that hook onto the genoa track. So I can use it on either side of the boat in multiple locations. I have a security line attached as well as sometimes the dinghy can come up underneath and pop it off the track. Cheers!

Hahaha…. It was quite the initiation alright! I did have to swim after my dinghy a while back as it got away from me while I was on shore. The wind was taking it out to sea, but fortunately I was able to run around the curved beach to get ahead of it and then swam out. At least the water was much warmer, lol.

Thanks for watching! It’s been a few years since buying the boat and I’ve put over 5000 nautical miles under the keel. Love the mizzen sail and the ketch rig in general. Thank you. The boat is new and I’m new to big boat sailing. I was a sailing instructor in my late teen years, but on small boats. I didn’t do any sailing however for over 30 years.

Hi! I'm curious as to your decision making to not add a swivel attachment to the anchor. It seems a very popular thing to do. Thanks for responding! Love the channel as I'm a single hander as well and have had to come up with inventive ways to get work done.
Hola! Thanks for watching! The swivel does have some convenience as it can help prevent the chain from twisting up. It just seemed like another failure point to me and the flip link does a good job of orienting the anchor over the bow roller. In an anchorage with lots of tidal reversals or such, the chain can get rather twisted over time. Once in a while I do untwist it if need be.
@@OnnoKok Hi and thank you for your reply! I’ve heard from some sailors the same thing about swivel hooks inducing a twist into a chain as well. In the end there’s a lot of factors that will come in to play and you just have to keep an eye the the chain regardless and be proactive on keeping the chain in good order. Cheers!

Hi! Yes, it was a custom ladder, though I don’t recall the name of the outfit. Possibly Cruising Concepts, but it was ordered and took about 6 weeks.

Wwas kind of wondering what exactly was the cause of air entering the fuel lines
Good day and thanks for watching. It turned out to be a faulty sending unit that was connected to the high pressure fuel pump. Fuel was leaking passed the threads. He only has access to the engine from one side and it was difficult to diagnose. I used my 360° camera to video the opposite side of the engine to find the problem.
Seems ashamed that you can not take advantage of what many diesels can do in that once running they need no electricity whatsoever, so if your battery explodes you can keep driving till you run out of fuel.
Yes, the old engine would’ve been like that. Though if the engine is running, as long as the alternator is functioning, there should be no reason for a battery connection
I love your videos. Keep them coming. If you’re already using heavy fishing line and breaking off, you might have to use a wire leader to stop sharp teeth from biting through. So good to see you enjoying your wonderful investment. Take care buddy
Hey Jerry! It was the fishing gear that was left in the boat so it was kind of a crap shoot. When we were in Cabo we went to a tackle shop and she set me up. Did a service on the reel, loaded it up with new and stronger line and then selected a few appropriate lures and made leaders for them all. I’ve since added a bit more kit and am slowly learning. If you watch GnT sailing’s version of the trip there is a scene in part two of us in the tackle shop.
It was cool to see what Isla Cedros looks like! We went to Turtle Bay instead.

@@Deft1s nonstop? Probably 2 or 3 overnights when I’ve crossed the Sea of Cortez three times or when sailing from Cedros to Mag Bay. My longest off shore passage is coming up in a couple of weeks on a different Hardin, probably 10-14 days off shore.
