Creating cut and come again lettuce for free from salad scraps
Do you ever think that you are wasting too much food, especially when it is fresh, healthy food? Well, no longer...or at least no longer when it comes to lettuce. This is an easy way to regrow lettuce, grow it quickly, no wastage, and get even more healthy produce.
Now you can do this in water, rather than soil, however with water you will not have all of the nutrients, which means it will grow slower, and will likely not get a head of lettuce. You will also need to change the water every couple of days.

Cicada Invasion

    As with the previous post says, I also had a terrible experience with these. I thought they looked great so I bought about ten of them. They didn't last one season in the Texas Panhandle heat, even being moved from inside to out and back again. They must have 0 uv protection. The " cheap stuff " is still working for me. If they are still selling these without re engineering them they should be ashamed of themselves.

      Hi, thanks for your comment, it's good to hear about gardeners in different locations. Sadly not everything works for everyone. For me, I now have 11, and the originals are still in pretty much perfect condition (cleaned after full use). I start my seeds under lights indoors, and eventually take them in and out. I am near Chicago however, so while we have some extremes in winter and summer, they are not like Texas, Arizona, Florida, etc. I am using some of the black plastic trays (new and up to 2 years) and this year I have disposed of 3 already and have at least 2 more to dispose of once I'm done with them shortly. To be honest, I have just 2 issues with them. Firstly, for starting anything like a cucumber or courgette, you want to get the 16 cell unit which are a better size for them, and the other being the lack of a lid, though I have brought this up with them and say that they are in the process of designing something as they've had a lot of feedback on it. I bought a couple for my mum in England and she lives it, however if course England isn't known for it's hot weather. I really do appreciate your feedback on this product and having watched my video.

    When you had to queue to be allowed in, how long were you queuing for before getting in

    • @parkerlings
      @parkerlings 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was there fairly early and the queue was long, however it was badly planned. There was one line for all application types, no organisation at all. Luckily I heard some people talking about getting through, so within around 1 hour to get in for the first queue, though by the time I got out, the queue was well over double the length. There are further checks a and queue inside, followed by another building and a queue there for further checks, but they were much quicker. Word of advice is to keep asking where to go and have your papers ready at all times.

      Thanks, Jerry. Yeah, I think it's the acid of the vinegar reacting with the baking soda in the toothpaste that does the trick of cleaning the silver. I tried these Burpee silicon trays (36 and the XL) when they first came out. Unfortunately, if starting seeds outdoors in south Florida, they'll last just one year. The soft silicon bottoms were fine but the clear/white hard plastic tops all started to deteriorate and crumble off when picking up the trays. I've been using the "cheap" black plastic pots for many years. Burpee might try using black plastic or treat the clear plastic with UV protection. I imagine they would work fine if starting seeds indoors.

  • @JimMeakim
    @JimMeakim 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I used these last year. I got my 16 XL Cell packs, on sale, at Tractor Supply. What I don't like is it doesn't come with a clear plastic dome, like other cell packs do!! I prefer to bottom water seedlings, which you mentioned. However, you have to either remove the whole cell tray, or leave a cell empty, to add water!! Give us a clear dome, and a lip to add water, and you have a hit right here!!

    • @parkerlings
      @parkerlings 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have to agree on the dome issue, it was a tad odd not to get one. For watering, a hole in the center, or a simple spout would be good. I just use an indoor watering can to refill and just lift one side up. I have enjoyed using them and did get more for this year.

    Hi, I'm out doing research, and you've got me checking my pump for a clean return. The ball valve seized on me, so in my last search for answers to resolving this, I found out that USDA only supports stainless steel for food-grade metals, not brass. But the parts on the tubes connecting to both ends of that ball valve are brass, not stainless. So that brass is rusting. I clean my machine EVERY use. So I was shocked to see what I found when I took the ball valve off. All that rust and gunk building up around that ball valve was nasty and has me concerned about how healthy it is when it's opened and all that gunk is pulled back into the chamber? Have you checked that, too? I realize this video is almost a year old, but I wanted to know if you have experienced this.

    How long doe’s the freeze drying process last

    • @sandy_from_parkerlings
      @sandy_from_parkerlings ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean how long is the machine cycle, or how long does the food last after freeze drying? A machine cycle varies based on how much water is in the food, the ambient temperature and other factors. I usually plan for at least 24 hours, but often 36 to 40, depending on how long I extend the dry time so I can package when it's convenient. The food storage depends on how you package it. In jars, it should last 6 months to a year; in sealed mylar bags with an oxygen absorber, I've been told food can last 25 to 30 years, but I haven't been doing it long enough yet to know for sure.

  • @justintime6346
    @justintime6346 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi! I just was checking my f.d. mushrooms in mylar bags and found them soft. I suppose that is probably a fail. They smell good but I suppose You might call them bad huh? Just looking for your opinion if you have any thoughts. I did not steam blanche and did not use a O2 saver. I'm so sad😞 what was I thinking!

    • @sandy_from_parkerlings
      @sandy_from_parkerlings ปีที่แล้ว

      I should add that this has happened to me before with watermelon. I was too quick to take out and while I tried to avoid putting any still frozen pieces into the bags, I missed one and it spoiled the whole bag after just a couple of weeks. I had the same issue with some yogurt and some potatoes. Little batches, patience, and understanding how to extend the dry time are the best ways to avoid this, but it was a hard lesson. Now I regularly go back through my bags and give them a squeeze to make sure they don't feel soft and mushy.

    • @sandy_from_parkerlings
      @sandy_from_parkerlings ปีที่แล้ว

      I also have (and use) a moisture meter, especially with thicker pieces of food to make sure the centers are dry. If the freeze dried pieces are cold to the touch when you take them out then they're not done yet and you should extend the dry time for another two or more hours. With your mushrooms, if they smell ok and aren't moldy then you may have caught them before they went bad and could still salvage them... that just depends on your preference and risk tolerance, I guess.

      @sandy_from_parkerlings ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Acolis Hmm. That could have been because the storage container was opened multiple times or was not air tight? Particularly if you're in a humid climate that could have been the cause. Perhaps store smaller batches for short-term use and fill from a mylar bag that you keep sealed with appropriate oxygen absorbers. I have to be careful that I don't pour my dried onions and celery directly into my hot frying pan for sautéing because the steam goes into the jar as I'm pouring... made that mistake once and had a similar clumping issue in that jar thereafter. Fortunately I use so quickly that they didn't go bad. I've not experimented with silica moisture absorbers in my food, but the thought has crossed my mind.

    Of course, your Mum's green thumb is probably a big help to the UK garden, too! Now that you're in the US, you'll have to hone your skills.

    What were the settings on the freeze dryer? It would help, thank you.

      Oh, I'm not quite sure what you mean? I just used the factory default settings. Specifically what settings do you need and I'll look at my machine to confirm for you.

    GREAT NEWS!!! I'm so happy for you. Are you able to work in the US? Look at you dressed all smart. I'm disappointed you don't have one of your funny t-shirts on!

      Thank you. Yes, it will allow me to work there, though learning to drive a car there will be first. Can you imagine me on 4 wheels instead of 2? Motorbikes weren't designed for Chicago winters.
