Robert Burns’ Role
The version we know today was popularized by the Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1788. Burns claimed he collected the song from an old man singing it and wrote it down, adding some of his own verses to refine it. He sent it to the Scots Musical Museum, saying it was an old song but "the best I have ever heard."
