    Often when digitizing a tape recording there are no azimuth tones present. We cant assume the recording was made to any particular azimuth angle. Play head azimuth must be aligned using the program itself.

    • @JeffersonDD
      @JeffersonDD 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks very much for watching. I’m not super familiar with digitization other than basic capture. However, one thing I should have mentioned is that in the absence of tones, one can simply sum left and right channels and adjust azimuth manually for maximum output

      @JeffersonDD summing is useful. I monitor in both stereo and summed. Summed alone can sometimes be ambiguous especially with a wide stereo image.

    The machines were designed for recording not just playback. I find it a bit wasteful if someone just buys a machine to playback master tape copies. If anyone wants to get into this format just for this reason only...stay away.

      Thanks so much for watching. For me personally I get your point, and I’m a big believer in using record for preserving LPs making safeties, and making dubs of my personal collection for people I trade with. However a large number of folks just want to use it as an Audiophile playback medium. These tips are geared more towards them. Also the learning curve for recording is pretty steep on a pro machine.

    Hi I'm completely new to this i would maybe like to get into this however only really the price is keeping me out of this (and I thought vinyl was now really bad in terms of pricing!) do you have a beginners friendly reel to reel recommendation to buy and a first tape to purchase that isn't in the $500-800 plus range?

    • @JeffersonDD
      @JeffersonDD หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Robert; thanks for watching. For audiophile R2R, the answers are yes and yes. As I mention in my video, an Otari MX5050 B2 Series is a strong performer and punches way above its weight class. You should be able to get a refurbished one for around $2.5K MAX. If you’re patient you can find them under 1k. As far as “affordable” reels, check with international phonograph company (IPI) the have several options at $250 and under. There are also less expensive options with some of the other vendors. One thing to keep in mind, research as much as you can and don’t get scammed. Since these machines are so old there can be tons of issues developed, so find one that was used / maintained regularly. Good luck in your hunt!

    There is no PRACTICAL use of tape at home. In the studio, that's a different thing and of course, tape was king in the analog era. Some would say that in the studio it still is.;) Back when all audiophiles owned a tape deck, its primary use was to record the first playing of a new LP and, from that point on, you listened to the tape so as not to wear the LP! You could typically get two or MAYBE three LPs on a standard 7"/1800ft tape at 7.5 IPS. Nowadays, there is no reason to record anything on tape for normal listening. CD or other digital media is much more convenient. You could still record from records to tape as was typical back in the day if you are buying records. But otherwise, why bother? If you are recording on tape to get "analog sound" and you can actually hear any difference between the CD and the tape, your tape machine needs calibration/adjustment/cleaning unless you are intentionally overdriving the input to get distortion/compression.

    • @JeffersonDD
      @JeffersonDD หลายเดือนก่อน

      Who said anything about practical?!?😂. Nothing about it is practical or certainly not convenient!😂. This video is more geared towards folks that want to experience the ultimate sound available from the folks that actually make tape a consideration as a playback format. Regardless thanks for watching and your comments!

    I ended up buying a Tascam MSR16 machine back in 2018 for under $300.00. It looked like it may have been dropped because of the huge dent in the metal on the VU face. They said the buttons didn't respond. I also ordered a pinch roller tire in advance because I knew they went bad, and it was. I took the face to a guy that I used to work for back in the 80s that worked on band instruments and with one whack in the vice, it was straightened out enough that the screw holes lined up. The buttons also worked. After putting the new tire on, the machine worked and recorded great. All 16 channels in and out worked and the dBX worked as it was supposed to. I've recorded a lot on it over the past six years with excellent results.

    In 1970, a buddy of mine, a few years older, was working at Tower Records (I think) in Hollywood, CA. He was a natural soft-sell salesman. He met a lot of folks from the recording industry. He met someone that was in the business and was a regular customer of his when buying LP's. He had upgraded his entire home audio system so he offered my buddy his old Ampex tape deck. It was old but it must have been a top of the line consumer deck when new. My buddy had a very good stereo system at the time: McIntosh tube electronics and original JBL speakers. Anyway long story short. My buddy got his hands on an English import tape reel of Led Zeppelin's 1st LP. To this day I remember the SOUND of that tape. I have not heard anything like it to this day. I have heard and owned many different versions LP and CD of that album. The sound quality/musicality of that tape was remarkable. SUBSCRIBED!

      Ah, the nostalgia of the ’70s! A time when vinyl was king, and reel-to-reel tape decks were the high-tech gadgets of choice for anyone hoping to impress their friends. Your tale of your buddy scoring an Ampex tape deck from a regular at Tower Records is almost too good to be true-like a plot twist in a cheesy rock 'n' roll movie. I can almost hear the theme music playing in the background as you recount this “legendary” moment in audio history. The “Top of the Line” Ampex So, your buddy received this “old but top of the line consumer deck” and had a “very good stereo system” with McIntosh tube electronics and JBL speakers. What a delightful ensemble! It’s like you’ve combined the most pretentious elements of audio culture into one perfect little package. Let’s be real: the mere fact that it’s old doesn’t necessarily make it superior, my friend. That Ampex tape deck could very well have been the audio equivalent of a relic from a garage sale-a dusty dinosaur that was considered “top of the line” back when disco was the height of sophistication. The Sound of Led Zeppelin’s 1st LP Now, about that English import tape of Led Zeppelin's first LP that’s etched in your memory like some divine auditory revelation-how utterly adorable! You wax poetic about the “remarkable” sound quality and “musicality,” as if you’ve uncovered the Holy Grail of audio experiences. But let’s not forget that your beloved tape is just one version of a zillion. You’ve likely spent years romanticizing that one magical moment when you heard that tape, while conveniently ignoring the fact that modern remasters and higher fidelity formats can often deliver sound that makes your Ampex experience seem quaint at best. The Unmatched Audio Experience You claim you’ve “not heard anything like it to this day.” Perhaps that’s because your auditory palate has been trapped in a nostalgic time warp, clinging to a singular experience like a toddler holding onto a security blanket. It’s cute, really! But the reality is that audio technology has evolved significantly, and there’s an entire world of sound out there that you’re clearly ignoring. Have you tried listening to music on something made after the ’70s? It might surprise you to find that the “remarkable” sound you’re chasing is still within reach-if only you’d open your ears to the present! Conclusion In conclusion, while your fond memories of that Ampex tape deck and the import Led Zeppelin tape are a charming ode to the past, it’s high time to recognize that there’s more to the audio experience than clinging to dusty relics and romanticized tales. So, let’s raise a glass to your buddy’s triumph and your fond recollections-but maybe, just maybe, consider stepping out of the past and into a world of modern audio possibilities. Who knows? You might just find that the sound of today can be just as remarkable, if not more so, than your cherished memories. Rock on!

      I think its a matter of personal choice. It's VERY hard and expensive to find legitimate dubs of more popular music. There are a few companies that are trying to reintroduce reel to reels, but the market is limited and expensive. Check out my “Audiophile Reel to reel video”; specifically the link to Dave Deyners page (the Reel to Reel Rambler). I believe he has more info and links to the manufacturers. All that said, I’m not aware of any activity under the TEAC / Tascam name. Your best bet for “Reasonable” is a refurbished Otari MX 5050 B2 HD. Insanely reliable and stable. With good heads they’ll last a long time. Other options are refurbished Revox A77 (HS) or a few others. Most important find a good tech. I hate when sellers don't include pictures of the tape-heads. They also always state that it has been recently overhauled by a "qualified technician". Usually that means you have to change the heads, pinch roller, belts, correcting bias, rec levels, playback levels, brake adjustments, and other stuff the so-called "qualified technician" has laid his hands on. I rather buy an unserviced machine than a messed up one.

      @@JeffersonDD I am a tech, but when buying a machine from another country, it's not so easy to get it checked out. Anyway, I think I have all the recorders I will ever need, so I don't think I will buy another one. Restoring is pretty costly too with overpriced parts on Ebay etc.

      @@bongchan531 Akai is not my first choice for a 2 Track 15 IPS machine. Their Consumer models are decent and they made some great Quadraphonic Machines... BUT: They are filled with specific transistors that can cause static noise, and they must be replaced at this point in their lifetime. If you purse an Akai, please consult Curt Palme's page for tips on what to look for.

    Generally, what are the sources used to record the tapes? Of course if the source is digital, the tape is pointless. Should the source be original analog, there are the replay/duplication degradation factors.

    • @JeffersonDD
      @JeffersonDD 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@williambyrne6855 its a little all over the map, in terms of sources, and in terms of commercial releases it depends on the vendor. In terms of the degregation issues, you’re right but there are ways to mitigate the most negative effects (ie; dubbing backwards, “bumping up from 1/4” 15 IPS to 1/2” 30 IPS, etc.). However as in all things, the source material has to be up to snuff, or the dubs won’t be so great.

    Excellent video. Bridge of Sighs ... brother, you're speaking to my soul. Notwithstanding the @home value, 40 years ago, we recorded on 8 & 24 track tapes. Recently, I've made a commitment to the analog domain in every aspect save the virtual tape which I can capture upwards of 192khz. That's okay for the stems, but for post/mastering, I'm interested in capturing to tape for the nearly perfected analog recording. Cool stuff. BTW, thanks for the resource/suppliers details. I saved this video for future reference.

      @@williambyrne6855 glad you found it helpful and thanks for watching! Nothing but respect for working with multitrack machines I can’t imagine how difficult it was back in the day. FWIW, a lot of early digital multis was mixed and mastered to tape, so I think you’ll have a lot of success working with the digital stems. It’s almost the perfect marriage of the convenience of digital and the warmth / saturation from tape.

      @@JeffersonDD Cool. When recording on 8 track, the drums went down on 6 tracks with the other two for scratch & timecode. The 6 drum tracks were then bounced down to two Left & Right tracks. The engineer was a drummer which really helped. Afterwards, we had at least 5 tracks for bass, keys, guitars, and vocals.
