    There is no PRACTICAL use of tape at home. In the studio, that's a different thing and of course, tape was king in the analog era. Some would say that in the studio it still is.;) Back when all audiophiles owned a tape deck, its primary use was to record the first playing of a new LP and, from that point on, you listened to the tape so as not to wear the LP! You could typically get two or MAYBE three LPs on a standard 7"/1800ft tape at 7.5 IPS. Nowadays, there is no reason to record anything on tape for normal listening. CD or other digital media is much more convenient. You could still record from records to tape as was typical back in the day if you are buying records. But otherwise, why bother? If you are recording on tape to get "analog sound" and you can actually hear any difference between the CD and the tape, your tape machine needs calibration/adjustment/cleaning unless you are intentionally overdriving the input to get distortion/compression.

      Who said anything about practical?!?😂. Nothing about it is practical or certainly not convenient!😂. This video is more geared towards folks that want to experience the ultimate sound available from the folks that actually make tape a consideration as a playback format. Regardless thanks for watching and your comments!

    I ended up buying a Tascam MSR16 machine back in 2018 for under $300.00. It looked like it may have been dropped because of the huge dent in the metal on the VU face. They said the buttons didn't respond. I also ordered a pinch roller tire in advance because I knew they went bad, and it was. I took the face to a guy that I used to work for back in the 80s that worked on band instruments and with one whack in the vice, it was straightened out enough that the screw holes lined up. The buttons also worked. After putting the new tire on, the machine worked and recorded great. All 16 channels in and out worked and the dBX worked as it was supposed to. I've recorded a lot on it over the past six years with excellent results.

    In 1970, a buddy of mine, a few years older, was working at Tower Records (I think) in Hollywood, CA. He was a natural soft-sell salesman. He met a lot of folks from the recording industry. He met someone that was in the business and was a regular customer of his when buying LP's. He had upgraded his entire home audio system so he offered my buddy his old Ampex tape deck. It was old but it must have been a top of the line consumer deck when new. My buddy had a very good stereo system at the time: McIntosh tube electronics and original JBL speakers. Anyway long story short. My buddy got his hands on an English import tape reel of Led Zeppelin's 1st LP. To this day I remember the SOUND of that tape. I have not heard anything like it to this day. I have heard and owned many different versions LP and CD of that album. The sound quality/musicality of that tape was remarkable. SUBSCRIBED!

    I’d like to get in to R2R but not too interested in a lot of the titles offered for sale. I would like to listen to my favorite albums (other) instead. Does it defeat the purpose to make dubs off a digital source and lose quality?

    • @JeffersonDD
      @JeffersonDD หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think its a matter of personal choice. It's VERY hard and expensive to find legitimate dubs of more popular music. Regardless, I have a lot of friends who will take a high resolution digital source and record to tape to get a little bit of "warmth" and some tape saturation to enhance the sound. Other folks say this is an abomination and recoil at the idea. At the end of the day its your ears and preferences so do what makes you happy. Many thanks for watching!

    I realize that this is a vinyl video but, I am posting a comment about your other interest reel to reel. I have been doing a lot of looking around & finding either old stock or super expensive new ones for small companies. I was wondering if in all you knowledge concerning decks if you had heard of anyone like Teac, etc. having any plans to produce a good quality deck for a resonable price? I wonder because of the re-intoduction of so many new turntables, cassette decks & CD players. Any info you might have or where to direct my search would be greatly appreciated! Also, nice vinyl adventure!

      There are a few companies that are trying to reintroduce reel to reels, but the market is limited and expensive. Check out my “Audiophile Reel to reel video”; specifically the link to Dave Deyners page (the Reel to Reel Rambler). I believe he has more info and links to the manufacturers. All that said, I’m not aware of any activity under the TEAC / Tascam name. Your best bet for “Reasonable” is a refurbished Otari MX 5050 B2 HD. Insanely reliable and stable. With good heads they’ll last a long time. Other options are refurbished Revox A77 (HS) or a few others. Most important find a good tech. Back in ancient times when Vinyl was king, the only thing that blew it a way was a really good 7 1/2 ips prerecorded copy of the same album from a major recording company. When I heard the difference I wanted to replace all my vinyl, but the cost, the fragility and the very careful handling stopped me from buying more than a few of my favorite artists.

    I hate when sellers don't include pictures of the tape-heads. They also always state that it has been recently overhauled by a "qualified technician". Usually that means you have to change the heads, pinch roller, belts, correcting bias, rec levels, playback levels, brake adjustments, and other stuff the so-called "qualified technician" has laid his hands on. I rather buy an unserviced machine than a messed up one.

      @@williambyrne6855 its a little all over the map, in terms of sources, and in terms of commercial releases it depends on the vendor. Recently, I've made a commitment to the analog domain in every aspect save the virtual tape which I can capture upwards of 192khz. @@williambyrne6855 glad you found it helpful and thanks for watching! Nothing but respect for working with multitrack machines I can’t imagine how difficult it was back in the day. FWIW, a lot of early digital multis was mixed and mastered to tape, so I think you’ll have a lot of success working with the digital stems. It’s almost the perfect marriage of the convenience of digital and the warmth / saturation from tape.

      @@JeffersonDD Cool. When recording on 8 track, the drums went down on 6 tracks with the other two for scratch & timecode. The 6 drum tracks were then bounced down to two Left & Right tracks. The engineer was a drummer which really helped. Afterwards, we had at least 5 tracks for bass, keys, guitars, and vocals.

    LOL… I took my MCI Training with, Mara. We were in class together. He's really cool. He's really good. He's made a good living of MCI. And I liked, MCI. I had no qualms with them, at all. Their machines were great. Their consoles… Eh. They never did anything for me. They sounded Brown. They really added no vibe I found useful. They worked. They did the job. They still made hit records. Lots of them. Don't ask me why? I never thought much of them. I liked their machines, best.. I was intimate with all of their stuff. As my apartment was only, a few hundred feet away from, the back door of their shop at the factory. I was over there. Often. I had friends, over there. I contributed, to them at MCI. On a couple of occasions. And stuff they never considered. They no longer wanted to follow through on. Because digital was looming on the, horizon. And we all saw the writing, on the wall. Digital Coming Here. OKAY WHO WROTE THAT! YOU'RE FIRED! I was Management over at Scully. So I know. I'm one of the last surviving members. Of these legendary American recorder manufacturers. And some console manufacturers. I was in the thick of it. Back in the day. In the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and into the double oughts. Then a health condition led me to waste. For a few years. And then a few years of recovery. About 10. But I'm getting back. To my Older Self. What the hell? Who is responsible for this? RemyRAD

    I don't know about you guys? But when 3M Scotch. Shut down making their recording tape. That was it for me. I saw the handwriting, on the wall. All was tumbling down. I did not like the sound of the Ampex or Agfa/BASF, product. As well. I mean, sure. I didn't have any choice but to use it. But it was not my favorite sound. 3M Scotch, was my favorite sound. It was so open and Ballsy. You, just don't know what you guys are missing. I don't care who's recorder you use. Ampex ATR series. Studer, 80 and 800, series. Stephens, 3M, MCI or, Scully. They all sounded great. They were all totally terrific. Yes I was trained to be a factory authorized warranty service technician for, Ampex, 3M, MCI. And while I turned down, job offers. From them. I accepted a Managerial, Position. With another one just as Legendary. One I loved using, myself. For many years. Scully. They were the best! I made the better best! I made the best, better! And nobody could stop me! It's what I was hired to do for Scully.. Yes there is nothing like, Saturation on Drum Tracks. Primarily. For all the other tracks. Digital sounds, on the money. And so you can make more money. As nothing really need be, realistic, sounding. What's that mean? It's all, unnatural, electronic, sound, reproduction. What's natural about that? How many musical instruments are made out of, flapping pieces of cardboard? I don't know any? It's only supposed to sound fun for parties. That's all that matters. As technical blah blah. And gear specs. In the, 21st Century. Really does not matter anymore. Everything exceeds, American NAB Standards. For pennies on the dollar. Actual pennies. And so if you don't get the sound, nor the recordings you desire. I can assure you. It's all your fault. You, don't know what you're doing. You are overthinking, everything. You are trying to pull a Chevrolet out of a, Chrysler showroom. That will not work. They do not sell, Chevrolets. And you can't make them.. So just, forget it! And make the rock 'n' roll recording and be done with it! Stop goofing around. Stop overthinking. Just do.. Grab a microphone. Place it on an instrument. Resist the desire to change the position. Just use it that way. If it doesn't sound good? It's all your fault. I doesn't matter where the microphone is. It only matters that it's in the, general vicinity. The rest is up to you. That's why you have knobs and dials. Better learn how to use them. There's a lot. I know. You'll just have to get over! It really is that simple. Do not do this job,, completely, Sober. You will overthink everything. You will screw up. You'll make an abomination of a recording. You will never do this work again. You will go to work for, Dunkin' Donuts. Where you will really appreciate the, powdered sugar, best. When they go low. We Get High! Out Now! Out Now! Or was last month Pride Month? RemyRAD

    How often do you clean your tape machine, when did it last time has been serviced fully and has been used, and which parts must be replaced asap!!

    • @JeffersonDD
      @JeffersonDD 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lots of questions here. 1) I clean the heads before and after each use. 2) I demagnetize the heads after about 6 hours of use 3) as far as “known to fail” items that should be immediately replaced? It depends on the machine which is why the FIRST step should be to get the machine evaluated by a tech before you buy it, or buy it already serviced from a tech. I can’t emphasize this enough! Good luck and happy hunting

      @@JeffersonDD ok thanks! On a side note I am sort of in the tape world. My fathers friend gifted me his TEAC X1000R when he sold his house and down sized. He hadn’t used it in years but was on “display” in his living room so it wasn’t in some moldy basement. Anyway, I had to get serviced. Mostly it needed a new belt. It worked great but after 1 1/2 years it stopped working a few months ago! Frustrating! Maybe the belt broke again?! I accepted this gift gladly from him but the major negative was that it only plays up to 7.5 IPS so I am unable to get any of the audiophile tapes at 15! Really want that MX5050 B3!
