The Water's Fine | Full WoF Fathom Sketch Animatic
So I have had this animatic in my mind for several months and have been working on it on-and-off since around late February. I have never made an animatic of this length before, nor have I made an animatic so focused on storytelling, so this was a massive learning curve for me. There was a lot of growth between each scene and I think that shows! A lot of details are missing and things are inconsistent at many points (please don't point out the missing wings in the sequence with Albatross and Indigo, that was intentional), but it gets the story across and I've been considering turning it into a full AMV in the future, so it's something I'll improve upon if I do so. Possibly making it an AMV is also why there are red notes left in the animatic, it's a WIP piece!
Anyway I am really proud of this, I love Fathom's story and it means a lot to me to have been able to make this for it :)

This is incredibly done one of the best sketch animations I have seen! The angles expressions and attention to detail make this truly a masterpiece! The way it perfectly captures the moments as described in the books make me feel like I’m really there in the pages of the book instead of watching an animation! Love love LOVE this (if you want) keep up the good work! (but no pressure 😉) ❤

I don’t usually enjoy things with an unfinished, sketchy look, but dang am I glad I checked this one out because *good gollies*.
I prefer this kind of Fathom animatic than the ones where it focuses on Albatross killing everyone. Fathom was only present when he killed Lagoon, the skywings and maybe Splash but he didn't see more than that. I love how you really communicate that panic of the moment here. The envoirements are amazing too, i just love when locations in the books i read get illustrated, even more so than the charachters!

WOAH HOLY SHIT THIS ANIMATION IS SO SMOOTH EVEN WITH A LOT OF DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES, SERIOUSLY IMPRESSIVE JOB! AND THOSE EXPRESSIONS ARE INSANE- THEY'RE SO GOOD AT PORTRAYING EMOTIONS, WHILE ON DRAGONS?!
Tysm!! I take some pride in my expressions so I'm glad to see people like how they were done so much 💜 and figuring out how to incorporate different perspectives and angles was one of the most fun parts of making the animatic.
As someone who studies similar real-life situations, the way you captured how FAST everything happens is incredible. It feels like forever, and then you realize it was only five minutes. The timing here is really incredible.
I actually hadn't thought too much about the pacing funnily enough, I just tried to make the scenes match the progression of the music haha It was a lot to pack into 5 minutes but I'm happy to see that it was done well! Everything really does happen fast, even in the books, but so much happens that it feels like it becomes independent of time in a way. Thank you very much for this comment, I appreciate it :D ❤️❤️
I just finished Legends - Darkstalker and Fathom quickly became one of my favorite characters of the series. Seeing him go from a kind dragonet to a traumatized one, then beating his own fears for a greater cause was very cool. I'm happy he had a happy ending with Indigo (nearly cried on her "death scene").
Completely agree, his story is one of my favorites in the series :D the happy ending with Indigo and the "death" scene both stuck with me so much

Genuinely couldn’t have chosen a better song for this animatic. It’s the perfect blend of intense and tragic, much like the story. I’d love to see this turned into a full animation one day, but even if it isn’t I’ll still be admiring this animatic. Great job!

OH MY GOD YES!! YES YES YES JUST YES!!!! I LOVE THE FAMILY CREST!!! Im all for how you represented the seawing massacre. Albatross never went “insane” he was just really pissed off and fed up with life. He felt like nothing mote than an object to lagoon and the rest of the seawings, and when fathom came along, he knew he was now insignificant, with a younger, more presentable replacement. Lagoon even justified this. So he just decided “nah fuk this sht” and tried to kill them all. Done being used as a tool, and treated insignificantly. I feel that he may have had the chance to be reformed if he was given it. He wasn’t totally beyond repair. He wasn’t insane. Animus magic doesn’t do that. What makes an animus seem insane is the fact that they make bad choices. Albatross didn’t really do that. He was just a really pissy grandpa. (Actually i think he’s fathom’s uncle?? I don’t remember smh) But overall, i LOVE your art so much. Also i got recommended to you by irl SmazaJack, and good god she was not lying about you being flip flopping awesome. Anyways, you’re on my artfight hitlist **giggles in team stardust**
I actually did head a bit for the insane route during the massacre, but still tried to humanize him when I could to account for not showing the story he tells to Fathom. And I did also emphasize the growing resentment from being considered replaceable. To me the whole thing was more anger with a hint of madness. I do think he could have gone down a different path if given the chance, but tragedies be tragedies :( And thank you so much!! I got jumpscared when Smaza was mentioned (/pos) but I'm flattered she did recommend me. I have been given your Art Fight so you're on my hitlist as well :))

This is absolutely gorgeous, i have literal chills on my body. I am not sure if you ever will turn it into a full AMV in the future but if you do i definitelly need to see it. This was one of the best if not the best story re-telling of Fathom´s backstory ive ever seen. Definitelly getting a follow from me because i need to see more of your masterpieces. <33

Ahhh you included the detail of the seagull getting strangled by the vines at the beginning!!! I always found that so cool and disturbing in the book, I’m glad to see it carried over :)

This is amazing! I'm glad you had the very last part be Fathom healing Indigo, instead of leaving it off on the more sad note of Fathom killing Albatross. If you do decide to fo the whole thing, and color and finish it, I'll be sure to watch that too!
For sure, Fathom healing Indigo was one of the most impactful moments when I first read the book! The fight scene was insane but the story didn't really feel complete without adding it. It's more of a conclusion to the event than Albatross's death.

The fact that you chose a 5 minute long song and didnt give up halfway through is impressive- All that animation and expressions and poses are GORGEOUS! I especially love the one where Fathom is shouting the spears to kill his grandfather, it looks so epic and dramatic. You definitely have an amazing talent- dont give up and never stop making beautiful masterpieces. You got an amazing gift! New sub! I was too speechless to not subscribe
5-minute song don't matter if it's a good song :) (I actually did stop working on it multiple times, but always came back to it) The pose where Fathom is shouting at the spears to kill his grandfather is probably the frame I put the most effort into. It wouldn't have the same effect without all the facial details added to it. And thank you, I don't plan on stopping 💜
