Hiking Keaau Middle Ridge,9-22-2024
This week, we wanted to hike another trail in Koolau mt ranges but the weather did not look good. Its area was over 50% change of rain over night and in the morning. We decided a trail in the West side. We hiked the Keaau Middle Ridge trail (2952 ft, 9th tallest in Oahu) that is just east of Puu Ohikilolo trail (3052 ft, 7th tallest in Oahu). We hiked the Puu Ohikilolo trail on March 2024. IMHO, It was quite tough and class 2 trail. The ridge line about 1 mile before the summit looked quite intimidating but was not horrendous (Class 3). The next ½ miles to the summit looked vertical but had a decent trail to the east with some ropes. Our total trip was about 6.1 miles with 3060 ft elevation gain. It included the road walk about 1 miles (roundtrip) since the access gate on Keaau Homesteads road did not open at 0600.
Its trailhead is just across the “Our lady of Keaau St Francis Retreat Center”. You could park your car there after 0800. When we return, we saw a couple of cars parked there.

For the last 2 weeks, weather for Koolau mountain ranges looked great other than some drizzling early in the morning. Our last hike was on 9 September. Leon was gone for over a week and I started playing golf. Leon had time to hike till 3 pm. So, we decided to hike a relatively dry trail but was rated “hard”. Our friend, Joe, was able to join us for the hike. Its trailhead is inside the gated “...

Finally, the weather for Koolau mountain ranges looked good this week. Last week, it was decent as well but we were not sure. After a class 3 hike two days ago, we hiked the Mt Olympus (Awa’awaloa) via Waahila Ridge. It’s located in central Oahu about 4 miles north from Waikiki. Our trip was about 6.2 miles out & back with 2705 ft elevation gain. Its summit is only 2362 ft but there were a few ...

Last week, weather looked decent but the Koolau side was still wet and muddy when we hiked the K2. This week, it was 50% change of rain. We wanted to put some mileages on a decent trail. @@kawikagarciaperez2900 Good luck.
Which was is your preferred way? Going up the way in the video, or the other way around?
Either way is ok if you have a GPS unit to navigate. I've seen a person doing it clockwise loop.
@@LivingTheDreaminHawaiiah I see. I was wondering for the exposed sections, would you have rather gone the way in the vid or the opposite way. Thanks
@@NormalPersonActivities Yes, if you are an experienced hiker, I would recommend the counterclockwise direction. The exposed sections are near the top passing the end of Kuiloouou Ridge trail. On the CCW loop on the west side, be careful intercepting the trail back on the south side loop.
@@LivingTheDreaminHawaii I have done a good amount of hikes over the years in Oahu, but this would be my second KST traverse. Thank you for your recommendation! I'll take it into account
@NormalPersonActivities Good luck and Mahalo for asking some good questions. I've hiked most of trails in Oahu and would like to help the hikers like you.
Looks like a fun and great view hike. Definitely going onto the list. Parking in Mai'ili is the only scary part haha.
@@NormalPersonActivities I parked my car at the Pacific shopping mall in Nanakuli.
It's a short tough hike to the summit.
@@LivingTheDreaminHawaii great, thanks for the parking tip. For the view, the tough climb will be worth it!
Went to the rim after going up from Koko Crater Arch, where that part of the Rim is, is it pretty easy to get from there to the Koko Crater Stairs from the rim? Planning to do that to the rim and then down the stairs
The east side of the rim that you went from Arch Trailhead (near the blow hole) is not too bad. The west side of the rim after the peak (from the tramway) is quite dicey. IMHO, it is a class 3. A class 3 hike requires scrambling and has a serious exposure to a cliff.
@@LivingTheDreaminHawaii Ok great! Im planning on just doing the East rim. The West rim from you vid and what you are saying doesn't seem like the fun I'd want. Thanks!
Nice hike. Love it back there
Good job finding the place. It's not easy to find if you don't have a navigation tool.
Why is it the decline part sketchy but not the no-fall zone scrambling? haha
Most of injuries occur while descending. While coming down on the counterclockwise loop, its trail was steep with loose mud on the open ridges and was slick due to dead leaves & small tree branches in the wood.
@@LivingTheDreaminHawaii Was the scramble up the rock face a safe scramble? Despite the no-fall zone? Thats the part Im most concerned about for when I do this
@NormalPersonActivities That portion was quite dicey. That's why I rated it's hike as class 3. Class 3 hike means that there is a serious exposure that one can get killed.
@@LivingTheDreaminHawaii yeah but Ahiki level of scrambling? Or like olomana 2nd? Closer to Notches? Or the chimney? Class 3 has variable difficulty, I can't personally tell the difficulty of it based off the video 😅
@@NormalPersonActivities It was not bad as the Olomana 3 peaks (from 2nd to 3rd peak). Olomana 3 peaks has some serious exposures but Puu Hapapa was not bad as the Olomana 3 peaks. Have you checked out my Olomana 3 peaks video ? I posted 2 of them. Some of my surfing friends told me that we were crazy going up the Olomana 3 peaks.
Planning on doing keaau soon from makaha side scrambling the ridge from behind the bathrooms. Started that way before but haven't gone the whole way yet
Best wishes. The last mile is quite steep and dicey. There were lots of trail markers. Mahalo.

Such a lovely place my friend, trail looks simply amazing! Love it
Mahlao. It's one of best and well maintained trails to the Koolau summit in Oahu. .
Do you have any apps or directions you use while hiking on the trail?
I use Garmin 450t GPS unit preloaded with the trail file. I downloaded the trail file in gpx format from Alltrail, and upload it to my GPS unit using Garmin "Mapsource" or "Basecamp" software. Both software is free from Garmin. Thanks for asking.
Now, we have hiked all the trails on the West Side except for the Keeau Middle Ridge. Please check out the videos. I just also started to add AI voices on my videos. Mahalo for subscribing and checking out my channel.
Such a beautiful and unique scenery my friend! Just beautiful
Mahalo.
Heading to Oahu in November and this is one hike I'm looking to complete. How long did it take you to get to pillow 2 and to do the loop? Have you done the makapu'l lighthouse trail?
It took us 50 min to get to the pillbox #2 and took 3 hrs 10 min to do the loop. Yes, we hiked the Makapuu lighthouse a few times via off trail. I have 2 videos. On my TH-cam channel, search for Makapuu. The regular trail for Makapuu lighthouse is paved. It is about 2.5 miles with 500 ft elev. The regular paved trail is a great family hike. You can also bike to the lighthouse !
You just ruined a beautiful place with your video😢 there are some things you don't share
Great hike my friend, this trail looks great!
Mahalo for checking out my video. We got lucky this week. It was the only dry place this week as the Hurricanes, Gilma and Hector are going through the Hawaiian islands.
Flag no pole! Lol
I am not sure what it was for. There may be some reminiscence of a pillbox in 40s.
Gorgeous scenery, place looks and feels great my friend!
Thanks a lot for checking my video again.
local spots ain’t so local anymore
We used to ride/push mountain bikes up as far as we could go before it got super steep (back around 1999-2001). Very nice ride back down from there. Once we left our bikes at the bottom of the steep section and hiked the rest of the way up to the summit. I would not go if it was muddy like that though. Hard enough when it's dry and I was under 50 yrs old!
Mt bike rides on its trail sound fun, for sure, on a sunny and dry day.
Makaha, My Home 🤙🏽
Makaha beach is one of the best beaches for surfing in the Winter.
I know every inch of that mountain my backyard
Waianae mountain ranges are beautiful and not rugged as the Koolau.
Can you post one for Mariners Ridge when possible?
When we hiked the Koko head rim or the Hanauma Bay Ridge last year, we tried to check out the Mariners Ridge trail. We could not find its trailhead !

I hear you. We lost the trails a couple of times but my Garmin Orgon 450t GPS (preloaded with tracks) helped us navigate. The cut-off point to cross the Makaha stream for the first time about 0.6 miles from Makaha Valley Tower is not Easy To Find when the tall grass is over-grown !
Thank you so much for the video, just finished the hike today and it helped a lot and inspired me too keep going. This hike is no joke, props to you !!
Yes, IMHO, it's tougher than the "Stairway to Heaven".
You putting this wahipana on youtube for all good and bad visitors makes me sick. We do not need our community exploited and seeing hundreds of hikers come this way because of your video. I can see if you just went hiking without naming places. Then you also filmed the Heiau. You are obviously not from here and trying to make a youtube name for yourself by documenting and exploiting our home. This is the worst kind of youtube channel. Yeah go ahead and look at my youtube. You will not find exploiting of my community and wahipana. It is people like you who do this who ruin our communities!
Damn, even the ice pond look all suntan lotion polluted. 🤦🏽♂️
Nice try but nope. The constant flow of water over volcanic rocks can give them an icy appearance.
Very nice. Thank you

Loved this video! Easy to follow. Can't wait to see where you guys go next! All Trails seems to take up a lot of battery so I am restricted on the hikes I do based on time allotted b4 my phone dies. Any suggestions on a different Hiking system to use? Mahalo.
I have been using a Garmin Orgon 450T GPS unit to navigate the preloaded hiking tracks and record the new tracks. It uses 2 AA batteries that last over 15 hours. I also carry 2 extras. As a backup for both navigation and recording, I use the Ride with GPS app on my phone.
Is this a legal hike? 1:23 ?
Yes. All of my hikes (Oahu / Hawaii hiking trail guide) are legal. Mahalo for checking out my channel. If you have any questions about any of Oahu trails, I can provide you information about its trailhead and difficulty, etc.
Lol it clearly says "private property no trespassing". Yet you claim it's legal?
@@greatguy2003 Most of Oahu trails go through the Board of Water supply access road. You can use the access the road as long as it is not fenced off like the "water tank" area. Also, its sign means if you get hurt while hiking, Board of Water supply is not responsible since it has its warning sign.
Looks fun! I have only done stairway hike that side half a dozen times I love that hike! Good job. 🤙🏾🤙🏾
Yes, stairway hike is probably the best for a tough hike. I hiked it 3 times. Its video has 6.8K views. If you have not, please check it out. Unfortunately, the Haiku Stairs are being removed by Honolulu City and County.. We won't able to hike the trail even from the legal way (Moanalua Valley) until they are removed.

State, county close all access to Haiku Stairs NEWS State, county close all access to Haiku Stairs By Kristen Consillio Around 7 a.m., officers spotted three hikers coming down the stairs. As the men descended the stairs, they jumped off the trail, went across the mountain, and entered into a residential neighborhood. Officers continued to search the area and eventually caught two of the hikers near the corner of Lolii Street and Noii Place around 9:45 a.m. The two men were identified as 25-year-old Yoon Park and 25-year-old Alexander Pedersen. Park was visiting from Texas and Pedersen was visiting from Denmark, according to a source. Both men were arrested and charged on one count of second-degree criminal trespass. They were charged and released on $100 bail. Both Park and Pedersen are scheduled to make their initial appearance in court on July 23. According to a source, the men belonged to a hiking group on social media.
