I'm not at all trained in anything accents from a technical perspective (i wish!), but i love cultures and ethnicities and languages. (Bilingual: Spanish (European accent mostly) and English (American accent). That said, I've often played around with various English, Scottish, Irish and Australian accents, just for fun. When i went to England and Scotland for 10 days, i felt compelled to stop myself from what i would describe as a natural inclination to adopt the accent out of fear of "faking it" or worse, making fun of anyone. Anyway, that was years ago. Fast-forward to present day, also many years after being clinically diagnosed with ADHD, and a number of ADHD content videos have brought to light that there may be a correlation between ADHD and the "ability" or pension to code-switch naturally and quite convincingly between accents the way Gillian Anderson does. So, as a true ADHD person would do, I've rambled all over the place to get to a single question COMPLETELY unrelated to your content: i wonder if Gillian Anderson is ADHD? Lol

I go from a California accent to a mild southern accent all the time. I live in the south so I’ve sort of picked it up. I grew up military so I interacted with people from all over the world. And I’m partial to British television so I often find myself easily speaking with a slight British accent at times. And when I speak Spanish, I’ve been told my pronunciations are pretty close to a native speaker (had a great deal of Latino friends growing up). I think some of us just naturally pick up what’s around us.

It’s strange how celebrities choosing to talk the way the want is applauded , almost revered…but if a civilian does the same we are made fun of or called egotistical or full of one self … lol (yes the status of celebrities is ridiculously set to a messiah-like it is shameful)….

Very interesting! 0:11 “ex-ited” ; 3:29 “no-ice” instead of “notice” or 3:44 “bo-um teeth”. I wonder when dropping “t”s became more commonplace with the RP accent. To my ears this sounds like a strange mix of traditional London/Cockney accent mixed into RP. I notice a lot of young people do this these days.

It's wonderful, Molly, thanks a lot. I think one of the most difficult words that there is in English, with shwa challenge, is 'comfortable'. Well, there is a table in it. so many people say [komfo(r)fteibl], with a nice stress on the last or second last syllable. I even remember my English teacher at the secondary school pronouncing like that. 😉

I am originally from Delhi, India and moved to London two years ago. My accent is now a weird blend of a refined north Indian and West London (is that even a thing?) influenced by what I hear from my friends and coworkers. I want to refine it further and bring it as close as possible to RP; and watching this video is the first step I have taken in this direction. Just wanted to say thanks. Not at all! This is about creating more space in the oral tract, imagining the soft palate is lifting, can help the resonance and vibrations of your voice fill a bigger space (in your mouth) therefore help you project and articulate with more ease! Kind of like making a megaphone 📢

Hello Molly. I just found and subscibed to you today. I was born in Folkestone, raised in Lingfield and Maidstone and then in a village on the Kent/Sussex border. My Grandparents spoke upper RP and my Mother RP. I did but having moved to Tennessee 12yrs ago, I am in fear my accent is going as new aquaintances from the Sothern part of the USA say I'm Australian when we're introduced. Back in 2012 they thought I really had a "Royall' accent how do I keep my Queen's English accent? Are there vocal exercises for this?

    • @mollypvoiceaccentcoach

I think exposure is the best thing! But try not to worry too much about accent shifts- it’s a very natural part of life and if you focus too much on “keeping” something it may cause tension… 😊

Great video Molly, I did watch till the end. The employee feedback example contains 17 and 21 words. I wish the examples followed the rules it is teaching. (gold star, wish, 3 short sentences, clear, but still feels a bit harsh. Def does not make me seem friendly. More pedantic really)

    • @mollypvoiceaccentcoach

Thanks for the feedback and thank you for watching :) I think to realistically try these out you have to give a little flexibility to help it fit the circumstance. If it’s too rigid then of course it will feel pedantic. It’s tricky to make rules for nearly 10k subscribers so please feel free to use these as boundaries or offers and make them your own!
