Is SG Junior a lesser version of the SG Special?

Is SG Junior a lesser version of the SG Special?
This was very helpful. thanks
Nice strat. Dsl is an underrated amp too.
Wow
I bought this shoot Me. What tubes u would buy nothing wrong with what's in it I'm a perfection freak
I haven't fiddled with them since the original tubes sound fine to me.
What would you recommend for a good amp to some good acdc tones.....? I dont need anything fancy
Marshall plexi is a no brainer
You have exactly the same amp and guitar as me. Mine is also in Miami Blue 👌
been trying this for a day and my picking feels much more relaxed and painless one question tho, in the days following of changing your technique did you still feel a slight pain in your index when you played? i still feel a bit of pain at random times but not nearly as much as i used to with my old technique, maybe its from all the wear and tear from 6 years of playing like that
It grew less and less. The pain didn't disappear instantly but I felt pretty immediate relief. It took a few months to go away completely. It hasn't come back so far.
@jogo2000 thank you so much for the video and the response! it helped a lot!
interference.
ok
Great video
I played with my friends JTM30 in the year 2000 or something when it came out and then 20 years later I had one of my own , its a excellent amp if like something classic rock or ac/dc s tones and its not so loud like other Marshalls, of course there is those well know issues. But that amp Rocks with Gibson, Les Paul or Sg..
I honestly don’t hear much of a difference between the bridge pickups of each. Maybe there’s a touch more fullness or something with the Junior, but I have not scientific evidence for it. I think it really just comes down to if you want a neck pickup or not. I personally rarely use neck pickup, especially on a Gibson, so I love my SG Junior. I think it’s one of the greatest guitars for strumming, as there’s absolutely nothing in the way of your strumming hand- no neck pickup, no selector switch, nothing. That feels very freeing and comfortable as someone who almost entirely just plays bridge pickup rhythm guitar. I love that I can get a chimey, Fendery/Gretschy cleaner sound with the tone knob all the way up. Then if I want the thick, crunchy Gibson sound for power chords, I just roll the tone knob down to 8 or 9. Just an amazing guitar.
I like this fuckin guy.
LOVE that tone..
I currently trying to decide on this amp or a JTM45 I'm looking for the early Billy Gibbons tone, this amp sounds like it can deliver the goods. I am concerned JTM45 maybe too bass heavy ? Love the Firebird, I used to have a 76 Bicentenary
I haven't tried the jtm45 personally so unfortunately cannot comment. I watched the jtm45 vs 1987x comparison TPS made a few times though. This one th-cam.com/video/-6Azqr6R-vU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=RpyN9mjlOfLd5cBA
Are the necks the exact same size and shape?
I think very similar. The special has a binding though, which makes it feel a lot different.
u have a rocking beard and hair!
Thanks!
Great review. Both guitars sound great, for different styles. I have this amp and play a G&L Tele with a PAF Humbucker in the neck. So I can kind of get both worlds. Ive seen there is a special pedal that you can order for about 125$ so you can select all 4 tone channels. But Im not sure if it's just for the 40C, like this video, or only for the 40CR?
That would make it really versatile, yet I basically always use the crunch channel anyway.
So tired of the overused and boring modern “sizzle” metal sound... This sounds so much better. Have you tried Origin 20H, by the way? Wonder if that will do the trick as well.
Thanks! I haven't tried that amp, but it seems cool.
great work, folk! Btw, which pedals are you using?
I don't remember. I think this one had a DS-1 or the metal zone.
When I used to play this song, I played the intro on the 5th string stead of plying on the 4th as u do. Also I held pressed E while picking the open strings. Just like you hold F and pick the strings, try holding E aswell and pick the open strings. The sustain it gives doing so is unbelievably better
Well some people think it is less… one less pick up, right? There you go.
More is more?
Glad I watched till the end!
Have to learn this banger in the next two weeks, thx for the help dude!
I worship vintage Telecasters. That looks and sounds incredible but I really want an amplifier like that.
Thanks! Immortal are awesome 🤘
Tastey stuff man subscribed, cool channel and vibes !
👍👍🍺 from Sweden
Thank you!! Immortal is my favorite band - can you do mountains of might haha?
Plug the chord into the input... turn on
Are the pots the same?
As far as I know. They are both stock and from the same period.
The 1987x has a wonderful sound if you can play it at volume (almost nobody today). I much prefer the 1986/JTM50 circuit at lower volumes. It takes pedals better.
Pop a bone nut on that Special. I did. That nut probably isn't cut correctly, causing that sound behind the nut. Mine's much more resonant acoustically now. Very alive. I've also found that pickup height with P90s is more sensitive than most other pickups. You really got to find the sweet spot, and in the case of the Special, you must find the right balance between the two, as well. But go with a bone nut for sure! 👍 cheers.
Thanks. I ordered a music city bridge for the special. Will be interesting to hear how much of a difference it makes
@@jogo2000 I got "The Savvy" Music City Bridge on my SG Special along with locking studs from the same place. Again, all this stuff has made the guitar extremely alive. That Bridge nails the intonation. Especially with the locking studs. So much better than the Gibson lightning bar tailpiece.
@@BostonWhoFan515 glad to hear that! I didn't get mine yet so good to hear that it works well.
@jogo2000 Yeah, I've tried them all. Tonepros, Faber, Pigtail, Golden Age, Wilkinson, Gotoh, Shaller, Graph Tech, etc.... nothing even close to the Savvy from MCB because most of the others don't retain the traditional look of the original. Some do, but compared to the MCB Savvy, they just don't stand up. MCB has two models, the Savvy and the Stud Finder. The Savvy is for guitars like the SG Special that we have. Straight across from stud to stud. The Stud Finder is for like LP Jrs and older SGs that had the angled wraparound tailpiece. So go for the the Savvy. They offer both models and locking studs in a polished nickel finish or an aged nickel finish. I went with the polished version since my guitar is mint. I'll add my own wear to it. It really complements the guitar so well. The locking studs are a must. They drop right into the stud wells that are already in a Gibson. So, no modifying. It'll still work if you use the stock Gibson studs, but the bridge will have a little lean like the stock bridge and you won't get its full potential. Once it's locked with the MCB studs, the guitar becomes so resonant. The bone nut I added helped a lot, too. The guitar's a rock machine after those two upgrades. 👍
thank you metal bro!!!!!
Junior of course.
Do you want to sell that amp
No!
Good to have you back here! Hope, all is good! Nice review 🤘😎 Love your Strat! Mexico or USA?
It's the vintera II 60s from Mexico
This was cool and helpful. I appreciate that. I also like the staccato way in which your name is pronounced. Cheers friend-o.
Killer sound, I love it
Hey awesome guitar and great playing man !! Thanks for sharing. I definitely want one now !!
Thanks for the demo! I’ve only heard or seen three of these so far… one of them I own.🤩 would love to find another one in the states. Peace
I play on the bridge pickup 90% of the time on my telecaster. Neck pickup gets sometimes in the way of the plektrum. I'll take the junior, gladly!
The position of the pickup in the body (where it is along the scale length) and the distance from the bridge to the pickup is what’s making the biggest difference to the two tones.
I think you are right
Thanks for this, one of the hardest songs on Damned in Black, I have made it my personal mission to learn the entire album :) Your guitar should sound more metal though :D
Thanks! The sound is an attempt towards clarity on my part. Perhaps it isn't working out too well. You're not the first who mentions this.
Yeah, Simon Smith has some good lessons and a great guitar sound, so maybe you could get some inspiration there? How are you running that Plexi? 50W is way too loud for bedroom use imo. @@jogo2000
I was thinking of buying this amp… But without amp attenuator it’s pretty loud …
It is probably too loud if you can't afford to get a good attenuator. It is very very loud.
I never cared for the sg. To me it's basically a strat with humbuckers. Les paul is my guitar of choice. Much fuller tones.
I can’t argue with that.
Gnarly tone 🔥🎸
Just ordered one, cant wait for it to arrive. Nice playing by the way.
Good luck for the new guitar day! At least this one is great.
It's the same guitar with an extra pup and neck binding.
You could say that. My experience of playing both makes me think it is a different thing. But I get your point and can't really argue with it.
I presently have a ‘66 SG Jr. In the past I had a ‘59 LP Jr. 3/4. I also used to have a reissue SG Special with Lollars. And I have a Firebird with soap bars. From what I hear through my iPhone, the Special has more sustain and midrange than the Jr. The Jr. is more touch/attack sensitivity. Bridge/ tailpiece is also a factor. ‘50s wraparound tailpieces were hollow, and killed sustain. That is one of the characteristics of Johnny Thunders’ sound - the short tail of notes. Nothing wrong with the tinkle of notes above the nut. Tony Iommi did bends there. It was part of his style. Thanks for the video.
I have one of these. Great sounding amp, but it turns out maintenance is awful. Original transformers are too small, the amp tends to overheat and the bias circuitry it apparently bad in general. Mine broke down and I left it with a tech a while ago, hopefully he'll be able to revive it.
Sad to hear that! For some reason the only thing that happened to my amp was the broken reverb.
go to a motorbike store and buy some heatshieldimg for those chrome exhausts. cut a piece and shield the amp from your output rubes. stick it in place with that alu tape you use for sticking ovenpipes together.
