From feeling like crap and freezing my butt off to crushing a 50km in just one week! This was an unconventional week of training for Houston as I took on the McDowell Mountain Frenzy 50km in order to get in a longer effort for Black Canyon 100km which is only 3 weeks after Houston. Was fun to get out and cruise around the desert and soak up the sunshine! Thanks to lets wander for the cover phot...

Thank you so much for sharing this training/event cycle! If you decide to go ahead with Black Canyon, I hope it is amazing :)
Congrats on running a tough & gritty race. You did your best on the windy day you were given and that’s admirable. Weather is so difficult to predict this time of year regardless of where we’re racing
Thanks for sharing your 4-legged family members (love Jack's rainbow coat - so cute!). Hope you find a good home for the kitten. Congrats on such an awesome effort with your training block! Best of luck next Sunday :-))
Ah, that good old Colorado January wind! I just started a training block and was thinking...why do I do this every January when I have to face crazy winds in the cold? Ha. Love that you film the local wildlife and your kitties. Also saw on your IG that you have a new podcast episode up - woohoo! Can't wait to listen :)
First, thanks again for the wildlife. I have to run in the suburbs of a massive city for most of the year. You are so lucky. Second, fasted blood work day is always rest day! That’s the rule. Love your cats. Feel your wind frustration and also wrestle with my treadmill relationship!!
Everythinig is going to gel and Houston is going to be a blast! New Year new mew :)
There’s nothing as amazing as seeing a bald eagle. So majestic!
This video delivers!! I am 3 minutes in and have already snuggled the cats and run with the wildlife! This is amazing. (You are pretty neat too).
So true regarding wrist based heart rate. I’ll start off a run and it consistently says 175 when it should read 110 during that first mile
Based on the cover, I expected more cat content. I am here 50% for your pets, 25% for the wildlife, and 25% to hear about you slaying. So, if you are ever struggling for content ideas…film the cats! Or have them do a week review.
Ha! Best feedback ever.
Yay for you feeling solid in your training (not that I had any doubts)!! I love the naked belt, it fits a flask, my stupidly huge Pixel, and any food/gloves/hat I want to stuff with no bouncing. I don't put it in the dryer though 😉 Also, I would love your opinion on the best lifting exercises for a 43 year old woman. I know David Roche has simplified his list to heavyish squats, single leg step ups, back extensions and calves so that he doesn't deal with lingering soreness, though Megan does more and women should do more as they age. What are your thoughts? Thank you, and Happy Holidays to you and taking a brief respite in all you have going on!!
Back in the day I was an environmental geologist and would fly out from Denver and work in that area of California for one to two week long work trips. On days off I would do some hiking or wander around the wine country :) Great memories; enjoyed seeing the trails/roads you were on and those mushrooms! Your weekly mileage is impressive - thanks for the inspiration :)
Not sure what Mario was thinking joining you on the workout 2 days before his Club Nats XC race 😅
Such beautiful places to run! And so many miles :)
I loved the podcast and sent it to some friends!! Yay for another good week! I love drinking my drive home recovery drink with hot water from a thermos, it helps warm me up so much better than my old car's heater 😉
This is a place for real, gritty training for real people. And 🔥cat/dog/horse/donkey/elk content.
I am just sad that this week I got really close to the elk when I didn't have my phone. We could have been super up close and personal!
Early morning workout + more wind = more mental toughness & resilience in the bank
I'm interested in a WIEIAD 🙂. They give me good ideas for trying new recipes.
I have enjoyed some of the recent editions of the ASICS Noosa Tri shoes which are 4-5mm drop and lightweight with a surprising amount of cushion
Nothing wrong with that Sunday long run workout. It’s tough running fast in the Colorado cold & altitude with the legs seemingly never warming up. But you are building grit & toughness even if you don’t always hit goal pace
1. That is a very large herd of elk. Do you ever hear them bugling? 2. What is that purple hooded shirt? It looks like the dream. I'm here to provide the really important, pressing questions. :)
I do hear them bugling. I love it! The purple hooded shirt is a lululemon hooded balaclava long sleeve. Which they apparently don't make anymore but it by far my favorite thing. Should have bought like 6!
Interesting discussion on the shoes. Awesome that you figured out the hamstring issue! I can't afford to buy new trail/running shoes so I'm on the hunt to find a good 2nd hand sporting goods store; maybe I'll have some luck. I recall that 4mm or even lower worked well for my challenged body. Curious; if you're running west on that one path segment, I wonder if the brewery would be a good place to have a 'vehicle aid station' . I've always wanted to ask them if I could leave a car there for a bit while on the path. Maybe I should promise to buy a beer when I'm done :) Really enjoying these videos, thank you!
I would think you could probably park there (if you asked) or maybe the fair grounds? That could probably be a good option.
@@fastfoodie24 yes, the fairgrounds in Poncha! Forgot about that. I used to sometimes park at the fairgrounds in BV and bike or run from there, on the dirt roads in the area. When I lived in Fairplay I'd go to BV several times a month just to be in a warmer climate :)
Nice! My favorite time to be hiking and running is during non-tourist season and when there's snow all around (but not too deep!). I immediately recognized where you were running w/your friend (I will never mention anyone's location, don't worry). I'm hoping to be on that trail, sooner than later :) Yay on a new podcast focusing on athletes with chronic illness. I'm in that group. Thank you!
I love running on fresh snow that’s not too deep. Very peaceful
Glad that a thumbnail for one of your videos showed up in my feed :) Had no idea you had a channel. I've followed you off and on @ Instagram for at least several years (I have reduced time spent online and on social media). I ive down the hill from you (the big hill that is, ha) and have been in Colo for 40 years. I used to live in Park County (17 years) and am quite familiar with Fremont & Chaffee Counties. I sure miss those areas! I'm from the boomer generation and am having lots of challenges in my life. I was a runner and hockey player; currently doing walk/run intervals. Have multiple autoimmune issues so can relate to what you've been dealing with. Glad that you've recovered well from your bad fall! I really like your content - training updates, thoughts, reflection, etc. I'm sure I'll have questions for you :)
I'm so glad you're feeling stronger and the week went well, and that you're focusing on eating more carbs!! Thanks for answering my question about Houston, I don't know much about the marathons. Best of luck with your training and health, you're going to rock it!! As a 43 year old who did all slow endurance things until the past few years, it's so great to feel good going fast on the good days, though my slow days are pretty slow 😉 It's all part of the fun though.
so jealous -- I haven't seen them in my area except that once
Yay, I'm so glad you're doing decently well!!! What are you excited about for the Houston Marathon?
Well 💩. I’m so sorry. I’ve spent a lot of time in the hospital attending my parents in the last year and that shot of you with the gown and the bed and the monitor was a shock. I hope your recovery is swift and complete.
Yay! So glad you are back here, sharing your journey! You truly are a gift!
YES she is BACK!! Hope this is a fun prep.. I know you have solid positive history with Houston, so hopefully that helps too!
Yay! You’re back on TH-cam :)
Couldn't leave you hanging forever!
You are talking about some major shit here - and I do appreciate that - but can we go back to the 4:45am wake up from your cat. My new cats are the exact same. Do you just live your life this way?! You get up at 4am and just carry on?! I am dying over here.
Ha, this may be the greatest TH-cam comment of all time! If you get up and feed them when they come in and wake you up, then they will get in that habit. For us, they are use to being fed early (in part because my husband gets up so early). You may have to endure a bit of being woken up but not feeding them for a while to get them to quit.
❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤
You did THAT. It was immense to witness and I can only imagine all the post further feels. May they wash over you in every sense.

Yaaaaay!!!!!🎉❤
Fantastic news - SO glad to hear that 🤩 Go do some epic s**t at Further now 🔥
Thank you for the update and that's fantastic news! 🎉
so glad that it worked out for you!!!.. unleash your power at FURTHER :)
Yay!!!! So relieved for you! Get ready to rock the taper 😁
Yay!!! Thanks for the exhale moment :) Great news as you approach FURTHER
Didn't want to leave you all with a cliffhanger!
Great news!!!
This reflection is amazing - bringing to fruition the goals and intentions you set for yourself at the beginning of the year - holding goals lightly, staying curious, joy in the process, finding community... You're winning! Thanks for all you've shared with us!
Thank you for showing up for us. Weird and wacky is best ever. Would love to hear how further goes or is there a place where we can track and get updates during also? Go be your amazing fabulous self and soak up those six days. We are with you running alongside playing you wacky jams and eating peanut butter pretzels with you.
You're awesome! Thanks again for sharing :) If it makes sense, I'd definitely be here for a post-mortem once FURTHER is done.
Definitely planning on doing one!
It was fun following your training throu out. Your highs and lows... I hope you figure out the medication thing and enjoy FURTHER.. can't wait to hear all about it... good luck ❤
Thank you!!
💜
I agree on those points, and it was good to see you seeming a little more upbeat, though you probably don't feel it. Also, can I ask about your sauna setup? It looks a little diy? Best of luck with everything!!
