What not to say when someone asks you for help!
Have you ever been told "it's all in your head" "don't worry about it" "it will go away"? This type of response is damaging and unhelpful. Hopefully this video will help us all gain a little understanding and empathy towards struggling musicians.

    If i feel like im running out of air in raspberries and the sound stops, what could be the problem? It doesn't happen in tongue trills and lip trills.

    Hi! for the last 20 years I have never been able to do this so my lower lip moves. It has always been the upper lip. How do I make the lower lip move?

    • @beatvm7345
      @beatvm7345 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In order for my upper lip to move I have to angle my tongue up and my lower teeth touch the bottom of my tongue when I blow air out. In order for my lower lip to move my upper teeth touch the top of my tongue and my lower lip is the only thing that touches the bottom of my tongue. Because my tongue is relaxed my tongue hangs down a bit, it doesn't stick straight out. I hope this helps! Sorry for the late response!

    For me, when playing is not going well I need to step back and try to determine what 'playing actions' are not being achieved. That could be physical things such as body position, or lip condition, etc. It could also be lack of focus or concentration. I believe it is important for us to be aware of the various physical actions and conditions that go into 'playing well' - not to get 'hung-up' on those things, but to be able to recognize when something is amiss. If you don't know what's wrong, you'll try fixing something else.

    I refer to this as my "inner billy goat". My inner billy goat emerges at the most inappropriate times. I'm sure there is a psychological component, but the manifestation is physiological for sure. And they feed on each other. I think we horn players are affected disproportionally by this, but I've been told if is an issue with many other brass instruments.

    You are over thinking but telling you to stop doing that won't help you but good start is stop asking random people to help you with a problem becouse there is high chance they don't have idea about teaching not mention about helping people that have stress issues good pedagogist with experience and will to help, not random people.

    Thank you for your video. As beginners we are taught piece by piece, "flatten your chin, firm corners, vibrate lips, and do that in a tiny mouthpiece." As we progress, we add "pearls of wisdom" and hopefully improve bit by bit. Sort of a build from bottom up method. Once we become advanced players, we start to address performance issues, and IMHO the answer is "let 'er rip" and don't think too much about what you are doing. So if you are asking an advanced player, "what do I need to do" or "how do you do that", you are going to get an answer like "just sing through the horn", because that is what they are doing, after they've mastered the fundamentals. It might prove valuable to find a horn teacher dedicated to teaching or a friend who is a bit better and ask them. Most players don't shop for a teacher asking, do you focus on fundamentals or do you focus on performance practices. I don't think the subject has been discussed enough for most to realize there are different approaches, depending on the level of the student.

    • @beatvm7345
      @beatvm7345 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your insightful comment, Kristine! I totally agree. In many ways, I learned that I grew up with a nontraditional education on the horn. I never was taught the "proper" step-by-step process until I made it to a conservatory. I was constantly told I was a "free spirit" on the horn and that I needed to "contain" myself. Like you said I didn't shop around for my teacher and did end up with my teacher by "default" which is another story for another time (but another subject that should be discussed as a community. I was discouraged to play horn from a prospective teacher without even playing for him!). The teacher I had was extremely technical. And while that may work for some, it created more issues for me in the long run. How do we help young high school students understand what kind of teacher they need?
