Japanese maples and more
Norway
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 25 ต.ค. 2019
I live in the north-west coastal part of Norway (latitude: 62° 54' 42.84"). I love Japanese maples, and really want a maple garden. There are however some challenges. The summer season is short, the winter is long, and the wind can be draining.
Since moving to this property in 2017, I have tried to keep Japanese maples many places in the garden. It took several seasons before I realized that the wind from north and west in spring and early summer was too hard for them when they were leafing out, and that they dried out and died as a result. Therefore I moved all the remaining maples to the only area in the garden with natural shelter from these directions. It looks like I mostly have succeeded with sheltering them from the hardest wind. Further I plan to add structures for softening the wind, defining space and framing the view in order to create shelter, dimension, and interest to the garden.
My ultimate goal is to make my surroundings as beautiful as I passible can.

What a lovely plants 🪴 Like 25 My friend thank you for good sharing Have a great day
That's not nutrient deficiencies in all of those trees? To me they all look sick
Awesome way to present this wonder variety; great photography. I love my osakazuki; I’ve started recommending them to lots of my clients
Thank you, Yes this is a great cultivar, robust and hardy. It has so much to offer year round.
The snow makes an amazing backdrop. No background distractions. Plus tons of light. I like your collection. Just picked up Orange Dream; can’t wait to start putting some trees in the ground.
Thank you. Orange dream is one of the trees I have had for the longest time, and it's such a thrill to follow it from year to year. Very interesting experience. This summer I think it went from bush to a little tree by changing its structure by shedding some of the branches. I hope that is what happened.... next spring will show. It has showed great resilience against hard climate conditions and my lack of knowledge. It's one of the favorites in my collection.

Wow, beautiful
Lovely collection
Thank you 🙂
TILL NEXT TIME MAPLES
Nice! How cold can it get in your location in winter (-? °C)? Do you have to or will you protect some of your maples?
It can get down to about 15 degrees Celsius during winter in my location, and the maples tolerate the cold as long as they are dormant. Otherwise I protect the smallest ones against being crushed under the snow, but the most important protection I do is against the wind, especially during spring. Also if there is frost in the ground still when the leafing out begins they need water in order not to dry out.
This is amazing…is the first time when is happening ? Is lovely to see something fresh in the refrigerator 🤓
Yes, it's great, can't remember to have seen it this good previously.
Just beautiful?
Do you grow that Maple in full sun
Yas
very beautiful place.
Will you be placing them further apart in the future?
It depends on how they develop, but yes I think so. At the moment I'm establishing wind sheltering bushes and hedges around other places in the garden. I recon that when the need for removal comes, I will have new places to put them
Great presentation of this awesome variety!
Thank you, yes it's really a great tree. Now the wind has taken almost all the foliage from the other trees, but Osakazuki is still keeping most of the leaves and is still bright red gorgeous 🤩
@@mbeeme355 It is among the most grateful maples in autumn

Very good video thanks you like 👍🤩
Beautiful color transition
Great! Nice videos, amazing maples, and what a view!!! A wonderful place, must be a bit hard to grow maples there? The struggle is also great for me in Greece, but for the opposite reason, it's too warm for the 3-4 summer months and the sun just scorches everything! I've placed all maples in shade with only 3-4 hrs of sun per day and managed to save them. The spring and autumn colors are not so great, so far. The heat just pushes lots of greens. Eventually I'll put them in the ground and hopefully they can cope better. Greetings!
Thanks for watching, yes it is a bit hard to grow maples here, and it has taken me several years to figure out how to do it right. Pots do not work at all here, but if they are in the ground they can take much more of harsh weather. I hope it will easier for you too if you get them out of the pots. Good luck.🙂
beautiful, thanks for sharing
Perfect match !!! Looks like you are in Japan, how lovely are presented the sunset and the views in general with the fall…you have done a great job this season, good luck for the next spring!
Thanks again, yes this season has really been a joy

It looks great. Unfortunately, it has been a very dry and hot fall here in western Michigan. Many Japanese Maples have dried up and dropped their leaves without even changing color. My eagerly awaited Osakazuki tree suffered the same fate.
The same happened to me last year, and this year is splendid. One of things I really like about growing this trees is the unpredictability. Next year your trees may be magnificent in fall
To explain the situation with the trees this year and to discuss what precautions I can take next year, I visited a nursery yesterday. I go there every fall to see the magnificent colors, and it’s also where I bought a beautiful Emperor 1 Japanese Maple tree last year. This local nursery is quite large and has a wide selection of Japanese Maples. As I entered the Japanese Maple section, I noticed the situation was the same. As you mentioned, it can vary year to year. Hopefully, next year will be better. Thank you.
How old is the Virdis?
I bought it five years ago, and it already had some size to it then. Altogether I would guess it is about seven or eight years old.
@@mbeeme355 thank u
Looks awesome! Any nights with below zero yet? :) All my maples have dropped their leaves now.
The night after I made the video was the first night below zero degrees celcius.
Fields for the Norwegian Gods!!! Very very awesome the presentation and I’m glad that you have another great season with that amazing Osaka, congratulation!!!
Thank very much, yes this has indeed been a great season for both Osakazuki and all of the other maples.
Nice
Thanks for the great video. 🙂
What a beautiful place to call home, Osakasuki is one of my favourites, mine is still going strong and has that lovely vibrant red now like yours, I like these videos of yours cheers and all the best from Ireland

The best season ever! ❤🧡💛!👍
Đẹp tuyệt vời ❤❤❤👍👍👍
Wow finally amazing colors, Congratulations!!! I imagine how you walk daily and several times along the stone path to admire these beauties! I think it's the first year when you enjoy the entire collection together for the fall festival.
Thank's, you are completely right, I'm finally getting close to what I have been imagining and working for. And yes it has really been worth all the effort🤩

wow Looks like Paradise! it seems like you added many maples in the garden? You have great taste in landscaping! Yes i agree with the other comment, it s like a fairy tale. Looking forward for new videos
Thank you for watching, happy you like the garden. Yes there has been added a few more maples, and I'm happy to see them thrive.
Very cool views! The garden turned out like a fairy tale!
This was the kind of morning with the light so mesmerizing that it was impossible not to film it and share it. Thank you for watching.
@@mbeeme355 the fog is quite interesting, awesome combination.
Very nice collection, I’ll be planting my maples for the first time this year. Even though I prune a lot of maples, I’m no landscape designer or gardener.
Hello and thank you for watching. I'm very inspired by your videos, and they have given me courage to do some more pruning my self. The trees you show in your videos, and also the gardens are both very mature and well established. It would be really interesting to see how you would approach pruning younger trees such as the trees I have. I hope you will consider sharing some of your experiences with the development of your own maples . The best of luck 🙂
nice!!
Beautiful maples!
Looking good. Beautiful place you have there.
Thank you 🙂
