You do not understand toddlers very well. If you tell an older child their feelings instead asking, you are right, its patronizing. Young children under four do not know their feelings and can't tell which feeling they have. You tell them so they learn to know and differentiate between them. Gentle parenting is suitable for every child.

I acknowledge what you are saying. And you are right that it is important to help toddlers identify their feelings. This is one of the pros of gentle parenting. However, I think too much emphasis is placed on individual feelings and not enough on reason and objective reality in this day and age.

@@TheOnlyChildClub Reason and reality is for older children though, 8 or older. Younger children need emotion, through emotion they find their way through the world, reason will develop when they know their feelings and are able to manage them better. Then its the right time to teach reason. You're not wrong, but a small child and an older one are two very different people.

@@Celestichthysmargaritatus That is true. I just think some parents use gentle parenting and permissive parenting strategies throughout their child's life. And I think one needs to adapt one's parenting style depending on the temperance of a child as well. That's is why I don't think gentle parenting is suitable for every child, because every child is different.

@@TheOnlyChildClub I agree somewhat. But Gentle parenting in my book doesn't mean to only whispering gentle words to a child, even gentle parenting can be very firm and can set a very strong boundary, and as a parent, you can also be loud if your child doesn't accept your boundary after several statements on your side. For myself, gentle parenting is a way of thinking of parenting, not being on the gentler side with your child per se. While violence is never a way to parent, gentle parenting just means to see that your child isn't always mean when it misbehaves. A child doesn't want to anger you every time, but it uses feelings and hitting and destroying stuff to communicate a need. If you as a parent or educator truly understand, that misbehaving is not always misbehaving, but a botched way to communicate a need, often a basic need (to be seen, to be loved etc.) then you can be gentle in your answer. If a young child hits its baby sibling, you can scream and shout, or you set a firm boundary(no hitting the baby!) but taking care of the need of the older child to be loved, to still be important in moms or dads heart. For older children, the need might not always be so clearly to be seen, but you can talk to your child. sometimes, when asked, they can say what they really need. So its a way of parenting the parent, not only the child, and this is why gentle parenting is suitable for every child.

The supernanny is actually super ironic because Jo Frost is a massive hypocrite. She has said herself that on that show she uses techniques she would never dream of using on her own kids because of how harmful it is to the child. Permissive parenting is okay, it’s natural consequence, if someone doesn’t do their homework the natural consequence is being told off by your teacher and having a detention. Please link the studies that state that these parents styles will lead to these outcomes. Gentle parenting with stairs will be entertaining them with something that is safe, giving an alternative. Also, I’d like to discuss the spanking reaction, your child is supposed to see you as their support system. If you hit them, they will carry that with them and they will not see you as their support system. They will be scared of you and that can lead to some serious mental health issues as they grow. The way you speak about kids only caring about themselves is quite strange; there as been a bit of research showing that those who have grown up with gentle parenting are more caring with others and are more likely to think about they’re actions. A lot has changed since you were a child, and rightly so, there was some really screwed up crap happening back then. People growing and acknowledging their mistakes and being good parents isn’t a bad thing. Caring about the child then allows them to not develop many mental health and a lot of gentle parenting wouldn’t condone their child to punch the child who was calling them names. It instead provides an alternative and a better way to express and process their emotions which allows them to regulate themselves safely.

I understand where you are coming from reg. Jo Frost as she doesn't have her own children. But she seems to get results and the children don't seem damaged by the actions taken. Although, I do wonder if more damage may have occurred just by having their bad behaviour broadcast on TV? I disagree with permissive parenting, I think it is harmful to children as they are not likely to succeed in the future if they always get their own way and have no consequences to poor behaviour. As I pointed out in the video I disagree with spanking 99.9% of the time. The only time I personally think it is acceptable is if the child is very young and is about to do something dangerous. A quick slap on the bottom may send a message of the imminent danger faster than just telling the child off.
