The light is jumping and orange because too much wick is exposed.
Was the wick primed?
this is the heat source for an F.B. Rogers silverplate coffee urn or hot water dispenser. I know because I have one and found this video on how to use it.
I got one of these at an estate sale for $8, but it’s stuck cannot get it to move up and down. Not sure how to fix it.

No wick to burn away! It's sort of like a primus stove but uses only alcohol instead of paraffin with alcohol to get it started.
There is a wick inside the piece that moves up and down
@@unhippy1 ah okay 👍🏼 I can't see the advantage of this over a traditional oil lamp unless it is to use as a heater / stove for boiling water ect
@@gerry5134 they were used as a clean heat source for the same sort of things you would use a Bunsen burner for now.....oil flames leave a soot residue that can contaminate whatever is being heated....alcohol doesn't
@@unhippy1 is the base pressurised by the pump handle on the side (like on an old paraffin/kerosene primus stove?) Just wondering
@@gerry5134 no....the handle only raises and lowers the wick holder.....it has a wick so why would it need to be pressurized?
I found one of those and bought it but never new the name of it.
It is an alcohol burner. If you will add a glass it will become a lamp, but low lighting....

It's more a stove or heather than a lamp, cause alcohol flame has a poor light

Do a study on dietz lanterns, airflow is key!
Seems to me it has a problem with air flow and the wick being to high. Proper air flow would produce a white light, not orange. Try reducing the amount of the wick exposed in the burn.
Well it sucks as a lamp but might be a good stove. Yellow flame for light, or in the case of a lantern white, blue flame for a stove. This thing is somewhere in between.
Hey your right about that; it wouldn't burn very bright as a lamp !

It's not a lamp. It's a burner for tests etc.
It is a marvel of engineering, preheating the alcohol so it burns more clean. It has better efficiency in high-altitude areas. I guess some accessories are available to protect its flame against the wind. Maybe some sturdy white nifty glass that fists the 3 rings. I definitely could use one of these on my camping trips to cook small meals or make coffee. Where to buy these if still produces?

Thanks for the demonstration. I picked one up today at a thrift store for $5.00. I wasn't sure if it uses oil or alcohol. So long as you carry your fuel in a safe, leak proof container and you empty the stove before packing it; it would be excellent for backpacks and camping.

It looks close to the height of a can of sterno. You could use it in a sterno stove or chafing dish.
