Welcome to my hiking and photography channel! I am a nature photographer with over 30 years experience and have been hiking and enjoying the outdoors since I was a child. My first hike was in the Wellsville mountains of Utah when I was 7 years old. I begged my older brothers to let me go with them and they told me if I couldn't keep up they would leave me behind, I kept up and since then have been dubbed a mountain goat by most of my family.
I got into photography in my 20's and have made it a career since 1988.
The goal of my channel is to help others find a love of the wild by showing them my adventures, photography and what gear I find works the best for me.
Thank you for joining me on my adventures of hiking, backpacking and photography!

Nature Photography in the Uinta Mountains, Utah
มุมมอง 714 หลายเดือนก่อน
Nature photography is all about exploring. Spending the time to find the exact location you want to take your photograph. 99% of the time you won't get a great image but if you keep exploring and then go back to a great location and wait for the right conditions you can get some amazing photographs. In this episode I explore an area of the Uinta Mountains looking for great compositions. I had a...
How to Edit in Lightroom with Point Color
มุมมอง 8911 หลายเดือนก่อน
In the comments of my last video someone asked about Point Color. I had no idea what it was so I looked into it and found Lightroom Point Color to be very useful in certain circumstances! In this video I give you the basics of how to use Adobe Lightroom Point Color and how to use it inside masks. I show you how I edited a photograph to make it better!
HOW TO EDIT IN LIGHTROOM with the Color Mixer
มุมมอง 20111 หลายเดือนก่อน
After giving a presentation on how I photograph one of the attendees contacted me and pointed out that the image I edited in the presentation would have been easier to edit in Lightroom using the Color Mixer. She was very right and so I decided to make a video of how to use the Color Mixer and how I made my image even better!
Photographing Fall Colors in Zion National Park

In this video I show you how to use the reflected light off of canyon walls to light autumn river scenes in Zion National Park, Utah. Autumn is the best time of year to visit Zion because of the cool temperatures and the fall colors. November 1-15 is typically the best for fall colors. Thanks for watching and happy trails!
Hiking Angels Landing Zion National Park

Angels Landing in Zion National Park is not for the faint of heart. You need a permit to hike this and if you are afraid of heights beware and stay away. I got permits for my daughter and me to hike this months in advance and we had a great time though I was out of breath most of the way. I also give you a basic rundown of my hammock camping setup by Superior Gear. I was able to capture a few g...

MILKY WAY PHOTOGRAPHY In The UINTA MOUNTAINS of Utah

I have always wanted to photograph the Milky Way from this location and I finally got out and was able to do it. Photographing the night sky isn't just about showing up, it takes planning and waiting for the perfect conditions. You can't photograph while the moon is up and expect to get great results but you can use to the moon to help light the landscape if you are careful. Thanks for watching...
Desert Landscape Photography at 10,000 feet with Summer Snow?
มุมมอง 218ปีที่แล้ว
We spent the 2-5 of July 2023 in Saint George, Utah where it was brutal hot, 110 degrees on July 3rd. So we escaped the heat and drove the short 1 hour and 15 minutes to Cedar Breaks to enjoy the cool temps and scenery. I wasn't really confident about the photographs I got but once I started editing them I realized I got some great images! I hope you enjoy these!

In this episode I take you around the Monterey Bay area of California and act more like a tour guide than a photographer. The conditions were not great for landscape photography so I got creative when I got home and did some sky replacements on a few images. Should I give up photography all together and just go back to playing the guitar? Oh and don't forget to check yourself for ticks! Thanks ...
Photographing WILD HORSES in Wyoming
มุมมอง 204ปีที่แล้ว
Wild horses are an icon of the western USA. We have a lot of bands of horses in certain areas and as I was driving through Wyoming recently I stopped twice and photographed one of the bands outside of Farson, Wyoming. Wild horses technically are feral and all come from domestic stock, though I believe many of their genes are mixed with ice age horses that were still present when the Spanish Mus...
VIDEO OF BIGFOOT On Mt Ogden Utah?
มุมมอง 6Kปีที่แล้ว
Recently one of the major Bigfoot channels put of a video that some guy in Roy Utah took of a figure magically gliding across a mountain here in Utah. Right from the beginning I thought it was a person so I investigated further and determined it was someone on a snowmobile or skis. There is after all a ski resort just over the ridgeline. After further analysis I determined the simplest explanat...
LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY with the Nikon Z 30?
มุมมอง 6Kปีที่แล้ว
So I decided I needed a better camera to record my videos in the studio and I had been eyeballing the Nikon Z-30 for awhile. Then I realized something, I'm getting older and carrying heavy gear when I am hiking isn't any fun. I thought why can't I shoot the Z-30 in vertical and stitch the images making the equivalent of a 50 megapixel camera? So that is what I decided to do! Check out my result...

Grip6 USA Made Socks Belts Wallets Review
The legend of Bigfoot was the thought, anciently, that it is cain, his family and lemech. Cain was cursed. The first murderer would be the last to die. This is why no one has been able to kill him or his family. The curse too was that the earth would not yield its strength so that he could never til the ground nor eat of it. A wanderer and seeker of food would be his fate until the end of the earth when he would finally perish. There is no shelter or game at high altitudes to sustain him and his family. He is in heavier brush areas for protection and better prospects for food. I believe 80% of the people reporting are just stories. 20% are legitimate especially those who describe the person as human face with flat teeth like ours. He could never exist in open ground or tundra or snow as it is a dead giveaway. You would fine him in areas of relative thickness of trees, abundance of game he could easily catch and not darting in front of cars. Cains fear was that people would find him and kill him. I do not think he would risk that by hanging out in populated areas. Great stories but not practical
I have a note stuck on my Canon 100-400 lens, to switch OS off. Has happened a few times, that my images got ruined
Good work on the nightscape milky way shot. 15:11 with all those leans in the background, maybe sasquatch says woop woop hi, Wood knock country. :)
@@WasatchSasquatchUtah Thanks! They are out there though I didn’t hear any on this trip.
Hey Tomas, good to see another video from you. Looks like a great location to explore.
@@craigpiferphotography Hey thanks Craig, it was nice to get out. I’ve hardly done anything for a while though I did spend a few hours in Glacier Park and got an image I like. I’ve been working on it today. I didn’t shoot any video on that trip though.😢
Very helpful, thank you!
@@sarae1437 thank you for watching!
thanks bro, this photo is complete coal but i will make intent to produce large prints.
Great 👍
Reasonably light, has a frame and, very important, adjustable straps on the upper shoulder straps. Could probably be improved with a composite frame and lighter shell materials to make it lighter, an adjustable back (or different back sizes on purchase) for comfort.
I'm curious - did you use exposure comp in this fox photo in the snow with your Auto-Iso?
Yes at +2
@@tomaswmitchellphotography - I figured - leads me to a serious question - why do so many people preach Manual +Auto-iso + use Expos. Comp? - when the only thing that Expos. Comp does in this setting is either add or subtract Iso from the settings. - seems to me you're adding an extra step that's not necessary. Plus, Auto-Iso gets it wrong most of the time - which is why people use the Expos. Comp setting to make up for it. wouldn't it be better to just use full manual? - now I realize what ever settings help a person get the shot their after is really the goal - many ways to skin a cat - but every time I see a short or long video saying this is the setting to use for Wildlife, I do scratch my head a little. my keeper rate went way higher once I got away from this setting and just use full manual. not knocking or mocking you or what you're saying I just find this setting not reliable enough.
@@TheWildlifeGallery388 Because wildlife photography is about shooting fast in changing conditions. If you shoot in full manual chances are you will miss the shot because you will be adjusting your exposure. For instance shooting in snow like the fox image demands you over expose by about 2 stops. If you are fiddling with your meter to make sure the exposure is right the shot will be lost. Animals don’t hold still long and and often as the animals move between shadow and light the exposure changes too quickly to keep up with it in manual mode. Try photographing a dog in a park that is running around through the trees. Do a series in full manual and then do a series in Auto ISO with your shutter and aperture set at what you want. The. Compare the two shoots. I think you will get the point.
@@TheWildlifeGallery388 I should also ask what camera system you are using and what meter setting you have your camera on, because if Auto ISO is getting wrong exposures for you I would suspect your meter is set wrong or your camera is faulty. When I use auto ISO my histogram is always really good.
@@tomaswmitchellphotography - I shoot Canon and use evaluative metering - I can assure there's nothing wrong with the camera - Auto-iso gets it wrong most times otherwise you wouldn't need exposure compensation, would you? - which is only adjusting your ISO up or down anyways- - subjects that have black and white feathers like a Bald Eagle or say a Belted Kingfisher it'll nearly without fail blow the highlights in the white feathers every time - in most cases Auto-Iso under exposes the scene - while these can be corrected in post - shot correctly there is less processing needed - I only shoot Wildlife and understand how quickly things happen - shooting full manual has YET to cause me to miss a shot - to be fair I'm not knocking anyone who uses it - it can work - I just found my keeper and hit rate went way up when I quit using it - the thing that really gets me with it is nearly without fail those that use it always input an exposure comp with it and as I said before that is only adjusting your ISO - i just don't see a benefit to it - if I did I'd use it and did for nearly a year - this is just my experience with it - we all should use what works for each of us as well.

Must be fun to fool people on TH-cam with clickbait videos. No Sasquatch.
I clearly have a question mark at the end of title, how is this clickbate?
You nailed this one. Initially I thought this was anomalous. Now I think it is a guy on skies. Well done.
Thanks for the video. Just 1 note: as the sensor gets smaller, the fraction kicks in sooner. You should never really go beyond f8 to f11 on an APS-C sensor. Hope that helps! I bought a Z30 for fun and use the Z8 professionally.
Hi Thomas, I enjoyed the video. Thank you so much. I just purchased my Z30 camera with 16 - 50 and 50 -250 kit set. These lenses have build in VR that makes them really easy to use and VR is very effective. I sold my D810 and Z7ii and purchased Z8 this year. I am supper happy with decision. This new Z30 will be my travel camera. I like the idea of stitching multiple images. This summer, I will be traveling to Turkey. There are so many archeological landscape sites. I will practice the stitching multiple images just like you suggested. Thank you for your creative ideas. Happy Travels.
Hey thanks so much for watching! Check out my Angels Landing video, I carried the z-30 and got some great images. The panoramic I took from the top was hand held using the level to keep it straight and it turned out amazing!
Nice! I plan on going first week of July.
Thanks for watching!
Oh so beautiful! Can we hike Angels 😇 Landing?
So, you can teach an old dog 🐶 new tricks.
That's awesome. Especially when you have some wider-open areas to allow for the long focal length.
Thanks!
I just picked one up from eBay for $125.00. looking forward to some astrophotography and camoitthis summer myself. Beautiful photos!
Thanks! They are pretty good lenses for the money!
Is there a way to attach a sleeping and pad on the bottom for an overnight trip?
Yes there are two straps.
How long are the straps? Thank you. I want to buy for sleep bag and pad. Rolled together. Do you think that would work?
Hilarious!! Spot on advice! Get up out of the chair and engage people!
Thank you so much!
Glad I could help you out. Good to see you putting it through it's paces. It definitely is good to be aware of and learn new tricks, can't be too set in our ways. Take care.
Hey Thanks! I was going to try to contact you and ask you if I could use your comment but I was in a hurry to finish the edit and release to video. Thanks so much for your input!
Can you zoom in more and make it more blurry?
Yah no kidding! Like I said if I had the high resolution file I would have had more to work with but I was showing you video I had captured off the guys TH-cam channel so it wasn’t very good. Even at that it is obvious it is a guy on skis. They are skiing in that spot again and the avalanche danger is subsiding so I’m going to try again this year to get footage of the skiers up there to prove once and for all this is NOT of Bigfoot.

Guys another brilliantly executed video 🤗🤗
Thank you so much!
Awesome!!! Did Erica know what she was getting into when you took her on this hike! This hike is still on my bucket list.
Not really. I told her about it and to look it up but I don’t think she did. She was pretty freaked out at first when we hit the chain area.
I got the Nikon Z30 but I'm a little worried about the EVF missing. I can still return it and buy an Sony A6400 which has an EVF for ~200 EURO more. What do you think, should I keep it or switch to the Sony with the EVF ? I mention this is for a beginner with absolutely no experience (it is the first camera).
The Z-30 really is a vlogging camera BUT you can do a lot with it. It has been an adjustment for me not having the EVF so I found this cool item. www.amazon.com/Hoodman-H32MB-HoodLoupe-Outdoor-Screens/dp/B074N4Z4J1 this works really good when I’m shooting with a tripod. I would keep the Z-30 and try it for a while. I’ve been doing photography for a long time and have lost track of how many cameras I have had. In 5 years or less you’ll be wanting another camera so you can learn everything about this one you can then move on.😁
Cool and creepy! Let's do it again.
Thanks for the vid. I stopped in because I heard the fiddle tune this Irish fiddler can't put a name to. Anyway, thanks for the tips and the tune(s)
Thanks! I can’t remember the name of that tune but all the music was by a Scottish band names Daimh. I love Irish and Scottish music and primarily play the guitar, and cittern.
Well I was going to say that intro sounded like Tommy Peoples' fiddle style. He played in that Northern style which, as you likely know, share many Scottish influences. I wouldn't be surprised if the fiddler from Daimh is not from the North as well. Lovely bit of fiddling there - I'll look into finding more about it. That last tune fragment at the end sounded quite a bit more Irish to me. Different band? Oh and besides fiddle, a bit of octave mandolin out of me also, sometimes. Nice to meet you Tomas and apologies in advance for the unintentional hijack of your comment thread. I've a torn grass catcher in need of repair which is how I got here to begin with. Now I know how and thanks again.
@@jlars972 no problem! I wish more people would comment on the music in my videos. That last time was Daimh also. Good luck on your repair!
excellent, a question... what is the main camera you used in this video?
Thanks for watching! My main camera for these video is the DJI pocket 2 with the wireless microphone.
Haha, you should add "and how to wipe out on a snowboard in the sand" to your title! Looked like a fun day. Thanks for sharing!
This is so good. Loved watching it.

Heya Tom, be safe & warm out there. 📷 🌙

man, I'm not sure I want to ask for marriage every time i go to an art show but I appreciate the tip
Here is another tip. Only ask your girlfriend or wife to marry you.😁
cool video! I liked it. I live in south of Spain and it's mostly warm and dry, I don't get much green/brown from the autumn season unless i travel east or north. I wish you well, and keep the good work. Forget about the dumbass below that critiqued your video like it was supposed to be a contest.
Hey thanks a lot I really appreciate it!
13:48 Nope. Nothing good enough in the whole video. You need an object from that to build the photo. Nether one primary object in your photos, I'm sorry. And, even if you like a view it doesn't mean you can take a good photo of it. 😉 Don't forget that. 🙃
Thanks for watching the whole video. I appreciate it. Unfortunately none of us typically get fantastic images when we are shooting a video. It would be nice but it doesn’t often happen. My purpose this morning was to shoot a video not get a fantastic photograph. I talk about the fact there were no clouds. I got there too late and I didn’t want to hike to areas I knew had better compositions because of health issues and time constraints. I’ve been a professional photographer for over 30 years but I’ve only been playing with TH-cam videos for the last couple years. I am not trying to become a TH-cam sensation. I make these videos for fun. I do though sell my work in very large format prints all the time to very high end clients. Just today I hung a framed 24x48 inch print in a clients office. Check out all my work on my website.😊
3:35 Nothing in the frame, too. Where is Your primary object?🤔
There again the image at 3:35 is video with the highlights blown out because of the dynamic range of the shot. The still image of 4:48 is the finished image and though far from perfect the subject is the mountains towering over the scene with fall colors in the willows and trees. This image is warm and inviting with nice blue sky and wispy clouds. My clients typically buy prints of scenes like this because the scene is peaceful and reminds them of the fun times they have had in an area like this.
3:08 Too flat.
The image at 3:08 is video not a still image, you can see the truck on the road moving. I shot those clips with my Nikon D850 which doesn’t have a lot of latitude in video. I edited the video clip as best I could but it was still flat.
as soon as I saw your introduction, I knew you are in Ruby Mountains.
Thanks for watching!
thank you for sharing
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching!
Really love the image at 6:09, the yellow of the trees and the yellow of the sun on the peaks with the blue sky is a great capture of nature in a single moment!
Thanks!
