Seyit Jamal ad-Din was a revered Sufi saint who contributed to Islamic scholarship and spiritual life in Turkmenistan and Central Asia. The architectural complex, consisting of a madrassah (Islamic school), mosque and khanagah (lodging for pilgrims) was built in the 15th century. It was destroyed in the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake (7.3M) - yet pilgrims flock to the saint's grave.

The Pokrovskaya Church is a Russian Orthodox Church in Mary, Turkmenistan. It was built around 1900 by Russian forces when they seized Mary in 1884 and guarded it against frequent attacks by British and Afghan armies. The Darvaza Gas Crater, the Door to Hell, is a burning natural gas field collapsed into a cavern. Hundreds of natural gas fires burning since the 1980s, illuminate the floor and rim of the crater. Located north of Ashgabat, Turkmenistan's capital, it is a 260km drive across the Karakum Desert on a deeply cratered and potholed road and sandy tracks. I visited the crater on October 18, 2024.
