I love the anthology stile campaign. That's what I am running at the moment =D Great video! Thank you! And maybe I got an idea for a one shot interlude. Amazing! And my suggestion, if you want to GM the non chronological flashback campaign - play microscope and make every scene a oneshot were the player in turn order is the GM. This can totally work out. I play microscope almost every week and there is no reason why you should not be able to play oneshots instead of scenes. We actually de play Follow in our ongoing microscope game and it is a blast! And very close to playing an TTRPG in the same universe. Give it a try!

@@b_m_p_1_9 Valid! I think that some people tire more easily tired of archetypes than others too. I try to have an equal love (and hate lol) for all these archetypes because variety is so important (especially when running a SUPER long campaign) to me! And since I've been running 2 campaigns for 3 and half years each, well... gotta make sure the players get some variety lmao
Sure, you can have then run into more and more stuff, but they will still insist they need a rest. Without the cliché doom clock, how do you prevent the 5 minute workday?
Well, there are two ways to do that. 1) just because something is a cliche or a staple doesn't mean it's bad. I would say what makes cliches bad is when they are unoriginal and there's no personal flare. Provided the conflict that the players are entrenched in is interesting and they are engaged with it. I don't think anybody will care if there's a ticking time bomb that they have to deal with before they can rest. 2. You don't let them rest. Whether it be by having a Homebrew rule that says that they can't take long rests in an area that's not safe, like a town or a Inn. Or maybe even the enemies just don't stop attacking them. The party has been cursed by the king and copper and every hour at night while they sit on unconsecrated ground undead will rise up and try to kill them. I think, it only will feel cliche in either aspect if it feels arbitrary. But if there are real steaks tied behind, what's making them move forward without resting, most players will buy into that no problem.

Yeah, I mean it is a thin line to walk. But the main thing is, even though they might want to take a rest, if you're trying to raise the stakes and challenge higher level players, it's not always about what they want. Players are always going to advocate for the path of least resistance because that to them is the easiest way to "win" What you need to do is plant your feet as the DM and say "because of XYZ that's not possible right now." Or " if you take a long rest right now in PC A will die." If you have players that get SUPER upset with you for simple things like that then, they're not ready to play D&D. I've had several players like that in my time as a dungeon master and it's just not worth it to try and argue with those types of players.
Another is: Don't be afraid to modify your monsters! I recently ran a BBEG fight and effectively upped the CR level by two or three, removing limitations, providing more legendary actions, and providing new (but appropriate to the BBEG's theme) abilities. It was brilliant. You can also do this with minions. Surprise the players with how the BBEG's lieutenants and minions seem tougher than the rank-and-file minions of the same type. You can always dial it back. It's harder to make things tougher in the middle of combat without having prepped everything to be tougher beforehand but it's easy to dial it back in the middle of combat. You can only increase a monster's HP so much before combat becomes a slog. So risk having a monster modified too much so you don't rely on HP and AC as your in-the-moment solution to too weak a battle.
Oh yeah! I absolutely agree with this. My approach with this is always less is more, what's the least amount I can change a monster to have the biggest impact? And that's just for basic enemies, when I go to do bbegs or mini bosses I like to try and give them multiple phases. So maybe phase one of the boss is their normal stat block with a couple additions, but when they get into phase 2 they get a new ability and their AC goes down but they get to add more damage to their attacks. Things like that also make the fights more dynamic!

Your fighter build wouldn't work with the Potion of Speed. "...and it gains an additional action on each of its turns. That action can be used only to take the Attack (one weapon attack only)" So you only get one additional weapon attack from haste.
Hey! Thanks for commenting! I did address that! at 5:19 "We get 1 from our hasted action" The point of using the hasted action to attack is so we can "unleash incarnation" which has no per turn limit and the only stipulation is "Whenever you take the Attack action, you can make one additional melee attack from the echo's position." So we use the hasted action to attack so we get not just one, but TWO attacks. Super efficient lmao

Great Video! As someone who plays a cleric a lot, I'm so happy about the healing fix. I'm not sure they are going to address this, but what was frustrating for me was all the material components. It seemed like a lot of bookkeeping for not a lot of roleplay. Also unless you're a cleric who took proficiency with Arcana, you can't create scrolls.
I know my cleric players are stoked too. I know they are refining the language around material components so hopefully that will help. Also, for crafting scrolls, in the video they posted yesterday they mentioned how they made it easier for everyone to craft potions and scrolls, so hopefully they remove that limitation.
As a DM, I'm really looking forward to the revised rules - especially the language clean-ups and balancing.

6:59 we already have those spells, it's called spiritual guardians, we don't need 6 "new" versions of it, when I play a summoner I wanna summon a glabrezu, a green hag, or whatever else they had in the actual conjure spells, not fiendish spirit and have to choose between three bland grey blob templates that only come into existence when you use that specific spell, I wanna summon something that has lore and personality and actually exists in the game, or summon a bunch of dreches and watch them bum rush the closest thing they see. This also limits things for a DM, I like my monsters and npcs to be able to summon allies that actually exist in the world and have personalities, not fey spirit who just sits there and does nothing and says nothing until you tell it to do something, what would you even talk to it about, it didn't even exist until you summoned it, I can use infernal calling to bind a devil and get so much out of it besides just a template beat stick. It also breaks the shepherd druid and makes their main feature just plain useless. Also, my players hate what they did to druids and making them use temporary hit points so they're going to hate the changes to polymorph too, so I'm just gonna ignore 5.5 since most of it is just a bunch of nerfs that only nerf happy DMs like, less money for me to spend for half the subclasses in the original player's handbook.
Very fair criticism. I believe there will still be opportunities to communicate with otherworldly entities. In my games (For my shepard druid), summoning a spirit doesn't stop you from learning more about where it's from and what it wants. The challenge is that they are changing so many systems and mechanics. It's difficult to guess whether it will feel bad to play or if it will finally provide a balanced experience lol
@@RollWithAdvantage5e But what can someone expect when they cast summon fiend, it doesnt actually summon a devil or demon, just a template labeled as one, it doesnt have the stats of either, it's not a bone devil or anything, it's just a template statblock with a label, I fully expect a real devil to laugh at me when I cast that spell and it summons a fake devil. Also, "If you are reduced to 0 hit points or are incapacitated against your will, you can immediately gain the benefits of Conjure Animals as if it were cast with a 9th-level spell slot. It summons four beasts of your choice that are challenge rating 2 or lower. The conjured beasts appear within 20 feet of you. If they receive no commands from you, they protect you from harm and attack your foes. The spell lasts for 1 hour, requiring no concentration, or until you dismiss it (no action required)." this feature is the feature I was talking about, it literally becomes a useless feature because they changed the spell to do something completely different. There are a bunch of things they did in 5.5 that made features redundant or useless, like changing spare the dying to do what the grave cleric could do with it, they obviously don't care about "backwards compatibility" because features just don't plain work because of the changes, it's like they added glitches into the game, also, as a reminder they will turn 5e books into "legacy content" so no one can buy them anymore, and then people will be stuck with missing subclasses from 5e and actual broken ones because of the changes in 5.5.
As a ranger fan, I was a little disappointed to hear the way it ended up in the video. Making the class so dependent on hunter's mark for its core features doesn't seem like the right move to me. I'm interested to compare it to the 2014 ranger once it's out, and definitely willing to give it a try to see how it plays, but I may end up going with either a warden land druid or ancients paladin instead. Looking forward to seeing the final monk though, very hopeful there.
That's about where I'm at. They have made SO many changes to SO many core features, I feel like I can't judge too much until everything is out and I can run a campaign.
@RollWithAdvantage5e exactly, everything in the book was made to work together. Overall I'm most interested to see the changes to the other rules/systems, like the crafting video that just came out. They've had 10 years of getting feedback about things that either didn't work well or were missing, so I hope there's a lot of good additions.
I'm considering running my next DnD campaign with the new system too. There are so many little frustrations with 5e that I've either worked around or hardly thought of for 10 years. All the new changes they're making have me thinking about the system more closely than I have in a long time

This a really cool idea. It seems to me that you could place factions on a chart like this also.
Exactly! Including those factions on there give a lot of context for how they would respond to certain actions the party might take, which I think really adds a lot more depth and realism to the world!

I like the idea, but I feel it relies too much on setting, which cannot be applied to every characters or every games, hance, I propose my own take on the matter: Sour: Qwirkyness. A trait or behavior that makes your character stand out. As an example, I have a barbarian that relys on taste to better understand her sourronding, meaning she will try to lick anything she can, A plant, a rock, a person (with consent) or even this visibly cursed item. Note that it doesn't need to be an Unique thing, The dumb barbarian or Horny bards are a bit cliché but do bring a sour taste to a character Sweet: No Notes, Cute is the way to go, but as an example, our Necromancer in the table I dm really loves dogs and will try anything to befriend them, even the wild ones Salty: Grit. I like the idea of "Militarism" better than the steampunk. So Salt could be any sort of Grit you could add to a character. Do they have scars? How did they get it? Adventuring is a dangerous career, how do they cope with Death? How do they feel about killing their foes? etc... Bitter: Tragedy or Edge. When we say someone is bitter, we mostly mean they are unhappy, so what pain and misery has your character suffered, or caused? Everyone has a dark secret they only reveal to their most trusted allies. Unami: Downtime. The unami taste is a special one, one that is less flashy than other taste, but is grounded, and so should it be for your character, when the stakes are low, what does your character likes to do? Craftsmanship is one example, but not everyone like making things, Maybe your character likes counting their gold and magic item, or prank their party members, or gossip about the latest NPCs they met. Who is your character between the flashy bits of adventure?
Wow. I love this. When I was making the video, I challenge myself to a limited time frame and for this one I went back and forth quite a few times on what each should stand for. I have about 4 variations of the script lmao All that to say, I love your interpretation! I think it is a great way to think about it if you might be having a hard time separating the traits from the genre! 😁

Very nice stuff, thanks for posting this. If you like geopolitics to go along with your power fantasy, as the PCs become true movers and shakers, this type of story is a great way to go beyond punching foes until the xp and gold falls out. I would also recommend checking out the outstanding Reliance: Interdependence and Inner Turmoil by Adam Bell. It provides a bit more mechanical/procedural support to this type of storytelling.
