mostly ukulele shenanigans
Moses
Playing around with short clips. In this case I recorded the first verse of "Moses" a capella, the second with just percussion, the new few on acoustic ukulele, the few after that on the same acoustic plugged into an app, and the final verse on my electric uke. Recorded over the course of several days and then stitched together and posted initially on October 5, 2024.

I love how this one is basically a straightforward string-band tune when I play it but it came out like a secular gospel tune on the (forthcoming) album.

This is the song I was in the midst of writing when I first went into the studio to start working on the album, so we tackled it first.

Built a rough loop with a bass ukulele, baritone ukulele, and amplified acoustic concert uke, before singing the tune and improvising on the instrumental breaks on a solidbody electric ukulele.
All I Know (Finn's Song)

Of all the songs I wrote for this album, I think this one is the easiest (and also in a sense, the most fun) one to play solo on a ukulele. It was written around a set of chord changes I really love and they show off the instrument's strengths, in my view.
Some Other Time (live, solo, electric)

Last one from the batch for this album, and the last one we're going to record basic tracks on (next month).
Some Other Time (second take)

Based on some feedback from the first version of this, I've added a bridge, worked on the chorus, and rearranged the changes. I'm liking it more now.

Bird Song (in D) - electric ukulele instrumental - for Jerry Week
One of my favorite Elvis Costello songs ❤ Nice cover 👍🏼
Great job! 😊
Excellent song and interpretation, I liked it a lot, congratulations from Madrid and see you soon Christian, like 1
thank you!
did you release it?
Yes, we ended up cutting a waltz arrangement that I put out on SoundCloud here - soundcloud.com/layersofmeta/who-loves-the-sun-1
(and that is now the first finished track of an album of otherwise original tunes that is still in demo form here: soundcloud.com/layersofmeta/sets/untitled-1 )
Well done!
thanks! I have a lot of videos from the past few years I put straight on facebook and forgot to post over here, so I will gradually get at least the good ones out
Hey! Can we get the chords?
verses: G C G (G) G C D (D) G C Em Am G D G (G) chorus: G (G) D (D) D7 (D7) G (G) G G7 C C7 G D G (G)
I would love to have tabs for the way you finger pick it. I am new to ukelele and music in general. Cant figure it out myself. How did you figure out that fingerpicking?
Kelsey Brennan hi! that is an interesting challenge. a lot of what i’m doing is improvising on the changes but i could probably work out a tab for at least the basics of what i’m doing there. if you can handle the chords (and the hardest one is an Em) and practice arpeggiating them, that will start giving you the basic feel. let me see what i can come up with (challenge accepted!)
oh my gosh right on! I would appreciate it a lot!!
happy strumming!!! 😁
hey. i just purchased a kala ka ce. It has active pickup, so would i be able to make metal sounds using an amp with effects??
Vineeth Thomas for sure! it’s big fun
Hey nice video. You have an amazing technique! I have a uke channel too if you wanna check it out:)
Rockin it. That's great
Eleanor D thanks!
Hey I see this was two years ago. You're awesome. I'm trying this song this morning on ukulele. Subscribed to your channel
Eleanor D hey i learned to play it a bit better after this take. some of the later vids are probably better for getting a feel, like i worked out how to play the main lick that ends most lines and it's very easy up at the neck of the uke. and thanks! :)
Roll on Xian. Sounding very fine.
Alan Thornton thank you very kindly!
Nice! keep going
thanks! any requests? :)
Nice! I especially like the instrumental bits that you have included. and the lens flare is nice too. :)
thanks! catching up on this. starting the see the appeal of a community. so great to hear from fellow travelers. the subtitle of my arrangement of this could be "dealing with that darned E chord" since the accent notes are both from the chord and I've never mastered the flat-knuckle ("A shape" from guitar") barred chord. the whole thing kind of emerged from a workaround, to support a mostly vocal approach i guess, but it does find it's own back porch bluesy feel at times i think
Welcome, indeed! Very nice job of picking. As Linda (Turtledrum) says, we don't bite. You picked one of my favorite Dylan songs, so thank you for jumping on board.
isn't it a great song? wonderful lyrics and both fun and frankly pretty easy to sing!
Well welcome aboard. This is terrific! It is one I need to do sometime. Thanks for sharing this. I love the way you filmed with the sun shining though you fretting arm too. Fabulous!
thanks. that was a happy (?) accident ... my main goal was to try to show as well as possible what i'm doing... it all still sounds really sloppy and hesitant to me but for that song it doesn't seem to matter so much?
Welcome to the Season! This was just terrific and I look forward to hearing more of your music in weeks to come. And please don't worry about learning on the fly and making mistakes along the way - it's a super group of people who are eager to help. We've all been there at some point. :) Great job with this one!
thank you very kindly
keep jamming my dude
I couldn't stop if I tried
Christian Crumlish right on!
the words are cringe-worthy but the changes are pretty cool.
Really beautiful! I enjoyed this version, Nice work!
Musician WilliamLK very kind of you, especially given the clams and false starts! i think it has potential...
hurt my finger a bit on this one

Had a flat tire on Alma, so while waiting for AAA I stuck my tablet out the car window and stood on the street to record a li'l music video.

Sounds good señor.

Great song choice! Love this.
thanks, mang. this was one of the first i ever attempted and some of my earliest raw/bad/shameless recordings posted on my blog are attempts to play this. i decided to revisit it recently and it's all coming back to me. a child could do it. a child could do it!
keeping things slow, and now all dark 'n' sparkly
getting more comfortable singing the outro
Working this up again.

another solo attempt

I want a perfect body. I want a perfect soul.
four easy chords...
You tried your best
old skool
Excellent choice! Songbirds in the background match the animal theme. Did you pick out the chords yourself?
pick them out? how so? I just followed the arrangement i learned like ten years ago when this was one of the first songs i taught myself. it's basically G G7 C C7 G D D7 (x3) and then G G7 C C7 D C G (I think) at the end. I've seen other chords there with A and D mainly but these ones sounds right and match the recording (I've played them over Syd's version). I play a C note at the "oh yeah" part but I don't think Syd does-- he just sings it. The birds did sort of fit themselves in nicely!
Wowza.
smiling.
not sure i'll ever get tired of this
finally pulled off the bridge live without getting lost!
part of yesterday's medley
managed a few quick recordings in my bower yesterday
this song adapts amazingly well to the uke
Wow. Thoroughly impressed.
gee, thanks! I wish I had stumbled on this arrangement earlier, because any beginner could pull it off!
it's getting to be that time of year again
Bum bum bum!
or as some say, bing bang bong but I really have to get the bridge down... funny how playing and singing together without stopping can be so hard!
I watched you playing this last night before bed, then woke up singing it to the family. A welcome earworm!
it has yet to get old for me!
quick and dirty hotel recording before leaving Austin
got a take i'm kind of happy with
nice, brother!
