Mother Earth - David Maslanka
St. Amant High School Band
2024 National Band & Orchestra Festival at Carnegie Hall
Mother Earth (2003) David Maslanka
Mother Earth was composed for the South Dearborn High School Band of Aurora, Indiana, Brian Silvey, conductor. The commission was for a three-minute fanfare piece. Each piece takes on a reason for being all its own, and Mother Earth is no exception. It became an urgent message from Our Mother to treat her more kindly! My reading at the time of writing this music was For a Future to be Possible by the Vietnamese monk and teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh. He believes that the only way forward is to be extremely alive and aware in our present moment, to become awake to the needs of our beloved planet, and to respond to it as a living entity. Music making allows us to come immediately awake. It is an instant connection to the powerful wellspring of our creativity, and opens our minds to the solution of any number of problems, including that of our damaged environment. My little piece does not solve the problem! But it is a living call to the wide-awake life, and it continues to be performed by young people around the world.

St. Amant High School Band 2024 National Band & Orchestra Festival at Carnegie Hall Ghosts of the Old Year (2016) James David I. Calm, determined II. Ferocious, intense Ghosts of the Old Year is among the most personal and challenging works I have yet written. The genesis of the piece was my sense of unease about the state of the world and particularly the Southern US where I grew up. In partic...

NOSTALGIA
Not the Hey! Baby 😭 Giving me trauma. I’ve never been able to read it in the stands because it’s written in a weird font. I love y’all’s marching show, better than boxes #denham. Yay
I played this in high school on 3rd clarinet and not as a college student I’m playing 1st clarient!!!

What an exciting video! I see that your channel is perfectly suitable for the platform known as Ganjing World. May I repost and keep everything as is. Please let me
We’re playing this song at college for concert band
I'm so exited to be performing this
This song will always be stuck in my head. Our timpani player was also a tennis player and he passed away on the tennis court earilier that week before being graded that weekend. We left the timpani silent .. most of us were crying during the song during grades. I had the tenor sax little solo at @0:40 and I know I wasn't in tune because I was filled with tears. This was back 1999.
soo exited to be marching freshman year this coming August
We played this for our band festival and won first place
Rewatching this as a senior when I was a sophomore in here, so many memories coming back. I really do miss that year and I don’t think nothing else can compare to that
"Classical music is boring"
Kennedy high School is playing this
just played this on the vibes for honor band! bowing the vibes is so fun and the sound it makes is incredible
I'm doing that right now as our band is doing this piece for our concert
We played this for our all region band loved it great piece
I play tenor sax for this piece
accurate. Marching band, or just band, is a big thing in my life. I have other passions of course, but I don't know what I'm going to do once I graduate. (which is thankfully a few years away.)
we’re playing this in band and it’s so fun we pretty much have the first two movements down but so far and band has been too disorganized to get it all but it’s coming along :)
You forgot battery losing their voice after too much dutting
1:30 you called me on that one lol. Too many marching band rehearsals I’ll be thinking, “how in the hell did I end up here? What happened?!”
Our season just ended, i’ve been crying for days, i dont know what to do with all my time now marching band is over
I'm a senior this year and my school's marching season ended a couple weeks ago. I... am not ready to be done yet. This video made me cry so hard, I don't want to give it up yet.
The dude who made this is my band director
Watching this on my last competition this season and boy does it bring tears to my eyes
Ok this is depressing yet happy at the same time 😭
Honestly Joining the marching band was the best decision of my life because I have made many friends aka my brothers, sisters and siblings and the best moment was we were going to competition and we sung the show on the bus. I suddenly don’t want to become a senior and I wanna stay a sophomore forever
God that ending is too silly for this piece
I started to cry because it is my first year of marching band and all of the seniors are helping me through spring training, band camp, and rehearsals before competition. It felt that they are my sibilings although one of them is my sister. I just wanted to say thanks to them. And I am in band and they are in band too. So they always have my back and I love them. If I was talking to you in fact you know me, you made me special and I would never forget you.
You left out the drama
I’m a guard in marching band, and I can RELATE to this!
I’m in my last year of Marching Band, I’ve been in the Mellophone section for 5 years… our Band won 2 New York state competitions in a row. I almost cried watching this, I don’t want it to end, even though it’s a huge pain in the ass, Marching Band is an experience like no other. You’ll never know what it’s like to be in marching band unless you’ve actually done it. If I could go back and relive the great memories, I definitely would, even though it meant I’d have to suffer again. You’re not suffering alone, you’re suffering with your 150+ person family. Anyone reading my comment that still has a few years left to be in Marching Band, please don’t take this time for granted. Once it’s over, you’re gonna wish you made the most of it.
So dramatic... lol
“Carrying flags, put equipment and props on and off the field with the timing of a military offensive.” Clearly, you’ve never seen my band get on/off a field.
