Speed metal of the time, with few exceptions (I am open to suggestions) simply wasn’t heavy. Speed Metal in the hands Chuck and Death combined speed with heaviness in a way few others had, add to that his BRUTAL vocal delivery and his was a force that IMO mopped the floor with its competition.

They don't exist anymore
Mantas (1983-1984) was later changed to Death (1984-2001), which they are considered to be the founder and biggest pioneer of Death Metal. The disbandment of Death was due to The Godfather of Death Metal Chuck Schuldiner dying from Cancer.
