The Northern Homestead (Alaska to Japan)
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 5 ก.ย. 2011
We are a large homeschooling family, American father and Japanese mother, with 6 kids in tow. We split our time between Northern Japan and Alaska as we strive to fully educate our children in both cultures! As post-career professionals, my wife and I are committed to providing the best possible education for our young children!
For our homeschool life in Japan, we are renovating an old kominka farm house in Northern Iwate. In Alaska, we are building our off-grid dream!
We are committed to becoming as self-sufficient as possible and want to bring the knowledge and experience we gain to the TH-cam community.

Harvesting Chestnuts! Wildcrafting Japan
Late summer in #rural Japan is the time for #chestnut #wildcrafting ! Known as #栗 (#kuri) in #Japan, locals harvest them as they fall from the trees and roast them in the oven or over a fire. While there are many, many ways of preserving this harvest, our kid's appetite is way to voracious to allow any these golden nuts to last long enough to consider preservation. But! you have to beat the chestnut #weevil to your treasure! It is a race to #chestnuts with the winner enjoying an extremely healthy and tasty treat!

Granite Creek is the second river. No Gold panning allowed on Granite Creek as it is a salmon bearing stream. FYI

Does no say mush anymore?
Never heard the command 'mush' on this trip. I think that term is a bit old school!
So envious ! You are living my dream ❤❤
I am incredibly grateful for what life is allowing us to experience!
Could you tell me climatic condition necessary for persimmon?
Asian persimmons are native to warm temperate and sub-tropical climates, but they can tolerate some cold weather and heavy soils, depending on the rootstock. 'Fuyu' and 'Hachiya' will thrive in Zone 7 and warmer. 'Hachiya' does especially well in California. Here in Iwate we are a 'cold' Zone 7, and the persimmons do amazingly well!
Thanks! I am trying to replace a manual weed wacker handle. I found a nice peice of black locust, but not sure where to go after cutting it to size.
If you have the old handle piece you can use that to pattern the taper. Don't just make the taper pointy (like a spear), it needs to be a bit elongated to get as far down in the socket as possible. It takes a bit of trial and error. Good luck!
Don't eat too much a time. You going to be hot time your shit time!
No gold just walking around boring...
I find gold when I go there- never very much, and you have to dig deep for what you do find. But it's safe for the kids and accessible! A little color to be interesting, but no living to be made that's for sure!

You never had to pay to camp in Alaska. Just pull off the road and camp anywhere. Now the federal government wants you to get a permit to do anything. As the late great Joe Volger once said, "I was not born to be a permitte."
You aren't wrong! Agree completely! I do have the disabled vet pass, so "I" don't have to pay to camp - but I firmly believe that a major illness in our society is not getting our kids (and ourselves, frankly) out into nature and outside of cell-phone range. This is my small little fight against that :)
Persimmon paradise ❤
I feel I am back to the future 😁 Nice video. I just planted 3 persimmon tree in Hungary 😊
She seemed to get better at peeling as the video progressed. The next harvest season she’ll be flying through them. I did only a few two years ago and couldn’t wait until the next year. Unfortunately, the frost really damaged much of the young tree but it’s making a really nice come back this year. So hopefully we can make a few more this fall. Beautiful family and wonderful video!
Thank you! We got a huge snow dump this last week- hoping our trees aren't getting beat up too bad 😞
Dissolved iron ions reacts with tannins to form a black pigment. It's not the carbon It's the fact that carbon steel leaches out iron over time
We didn't know you can prune a persimmon. Good information 👍 Thank you for sharing. Romey from Southern California
Interesting video! Farmers never ever throw away anything. I should know i am one!!
Really looking forward to getting into the main structure! I know my imagination is surely outrunning the reality... but it's fun to dream!
That's probably Jess Holmes, he lives in that area
They were working and didn't stop to chat, but they seemed the nice and friendly sort! Didn't seem to mind to much that I slowed them up a bit :)
Thanks for the video. The real gold is in the scenery, fresh air, and fun.
Beautiful day, that it was! I guess a squatter with a camper sat down on the creek a week after we left and was causing quite a bit of problems for the panners. Hope that got straightened up right!
Cool ! Thanks for the video Not much content on that Alaska area
I loved persimmons ❤
Is it necessary to peel them? The skin is as thin as tomato skin, peeling is too labor intensive. In China they are flattened into a disc about 2cm thick and then dried.
If you don't peel them, they don't dry fast enough and the whole fruit turns mushy. Maybe because it's too humid in Japan?
@@Eric.Carter But if they're flattened into a disc first, the skin would split open in numerous spots, that may be enough to dehydrate them in a windy location. This also increase the surface area and reduce the distance of the center to the surface, speeding up the drying.
@@tkjho good idea! Will have to look into it! I wonder how they flatten it? With just a board and weight? Or with a specific type of press?
@@Eric.Carter I think you have to let it ripen on the tree a bit longer until they become soft, then it would be easy to flatten with board and weight. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persimmon#/media/File:Orderly_dried_fruit.jpg
Looks nice😋
It's incredible! Not entirely unlike dried apricots!
Did you know that there are pedophiles who scour youtube for videos of children. Every day videos, like the ones you post with your kids in them? You're less than 50 videos in, it's not too late to protect your children! I think you'd be shocked at the clues you give and aren't thinking about how easy it would be for some psycho to come kidnap your kids!
Thank you for your concern!
Yes, the most-delicious fruit!! They grow wild in E. US, but our native ones are not as delicious as the lg. Jap. (acorn-shaped) FUJI variety, whose skin tastes great too when it's ripe. (the squat HACHIYA var. is almost as good as Fuji, IMO.) Pick after the 1st or 2nd frost makes them sweet; or just wait till they soften naturally inside. (all are very expensive in some grocery stores tho'.) When sweet i cook them slightly then freeze the pulp; or dry them. Arigato!
You know your persimmons! An amazing fruit, and soooo versatile! We make an incredible jam out them when we get a batch that gets soft too fast!

Thanks for the information. I would be specifically stopping for photos of the eagles and possibly otters. Do you recall if you saw any otters?
Did not see any otters, but saw some small game trails along the river with plenty of sign. So I know they are there!
Great review of Kesugi Ken Campground. Thank you for the camp host PSA!! 👍😎
Can’t believe how reasonable camping is in Alaska something like this in southern California would be probably $80 a night great place for the money
Thank you for watching! Please let me know if there is any information that would be useful to add to these videos 😊
Hi my dear friend thank you so much for another great video. I really enjoyed it. I watched from the beginning to the end piece of the kind of content videos. I like to watch kidding me out of the house and show me some beautiful places to go. Hugs and kisses from grandma, Sandy and Debbie.
Just a heads up they lock the gate to the exit at 10pm. We didn’t know that and got back to camp a little after 10 and were locked out. It wasn’t posted anywhere that it was policy to lock the gates. They said they were going to put up signs but just be aware that the gates will be shut and locked at 10.
Didn't know that! Thank you!
Checked with the host today and they have discontinued their policy of locking the gate at 10pm. Apparently Alaska State Parks frowns on their hosts unilaterally closing their parks at night because they don't want to be disturbed! 😅
