Kernel-based Moving Object Detection (KBMOD) -- shift-and-stack at Rubin scale
This month, we are joined by the Kernel-based Moving Object Detection team, including Jeremy Kubica (LINCC, CMU), Max West (LINCC,UW), Wilson Beebe (LINCC,UW), Drew Oldag (LINCC,UW), and Dino Bektešević (UW), and co-host Colin Orion Chandler (UW) who will talk about one of the core projects from LINCC Frameworks. This talk is part of the LINCC Tech Talks series, hosted by Colin Orion Chandler (DiRAC Institute, University of Washington) and Mi Dai (University of Pittsburg), and takes place every second Thursday at 10:00 AM Pacific time. More information about the Tech Talk series is available here: lsstdiscoveryalliance.org/programs/tech-talks/
This talk was held on Thursday, December 12, 2024.
Abstract:
Shift and stack algorithms have the potential to push down into the noise and find distant solar system objects that are too faint to detect with traditional linkage algorithms. In this talk we present KBMOD, a shift and stack algorithm designed to find Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs). We introduce the core algorithm which was originally applied to fields of the DEEP survey. We then discuss recent extensions led by a joint team from LINCC Frameworks and the University of Washington to improve the robustness and accuracy of the algorithm. Specifically we discuss how we can account for nonlinear motion due to the Earth’s own orbit in order to make the tracking more robust across nights.

Let's work with the postulates of Einstein's theory of relativity. And if we apply new technologies for this, using the experience of Michelson Morley on the airplane fixing speed 200, 300, 400 m/s., we will see how quantum gravity works. Such measurements are impossible on the satellite due to weightlessness.

Several references were made to some code being available on github. It would perhaps be useful to put links to the github URLs involved. I looked around but could not find any. The presenter for the Cross Matching said that there is a link to HIPSCat on his slide. But all we see on youtube is the word HIPSCat--we don't have the slide. In other words, you have the slides, we do not. Similarly, Jeremy referred to a different github repo, but I was unable to find that either. (I did find the kbmod repo, whose github url was shown on screen though.) So my suggestion is that if there are github repos that you wish to share with the larger community and world, put the links on slides, or in the comments to this video, or someplace people can find them. (Googling for various things has not worked for me either.) I'm sure it is very obvious to the LINCC team where the repos are--but not to anybody else. Thanks.

Hi Todd. Thanks for your message and suggestions! We are collating our code and contributions in this GitHub wiki: github.com/lincc-frameworks/docs/wiki. This should contain a short overview of every project + links to code. Of course, it is pretty sparse at the moment, but it will grow with time. I agree that we need to make this information more publicly available. Based on your question, we have created a google drive folder where we plan to put all of the slides from tech talks. It is here: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1bKbyCr1Ndk1ZMzX3jGRLYqc31bmDlbGp. It will contain all of the slides from tech talks that the authors are ok with sharing. When we get all the slides from the previous talks, we will put them in the description of the videos and on the webpage. Thanks once again!
