Goodness of God - Fingerstyle Lesson - With Guitar TAB!
Learn to play a beautiful solo fingerstyle arrangement of the worship song "Goodness of God". This tutorial shows how to play this song in standard tuning in the key of G and mainly uses G, C, D and Em chord shapes. This video moves quickly and there's no fluff so if you need to slow it down, remember you can use the settings gear in the lower corner of the screen to adjust the playback to .75 or .5. Also, you can use the back arrows on the keyboard to help you navigate without using the mouse.

I have several books with fingerstyle arrangements for old hymns and also Christmas songs at my website: www.joshsnodgrass.com/tab
This arrangement is very similar to the most recent version of this song that I have recorded. The audio to that track is in this video on my other channel: th-cam.com/video/tvgbwucdMGc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=eJTX8ty9n7zBA1PU -It's about the 5th song in that video (the video has timestamps in the description to help you find it!).
People often ask about what guitar I play. I most frequently play this Zager that's in this video. It's amazing, I recorded it here with no effects and it still sounds great!

Yeah, that's strange. I think TH-cam can be a bit glitchy sometimes.
Awesome lesson!!
I'm so glad it was helpful! This practice technique has helped me so much.

@@JoshSnodgrassLessons Hi Josh - question : the open notes in the () Do I play them ? Or is that to symbolize they are ringing.. pls help
@@paulchristie9170 Hi, great question. The () indicates that the note is ringing out from the previous measure. So no, you don't pick those, you just let them ring.
Love your playing
Wonderful
This is great! I just started playing the guitar a few months ago and videos like this are really helpful in understanding some of the nuances of the instrument. By the way, your music was part of my inspiration for wanting to learn. Thanks for sharing!
That's so awesome and I'm glad it was helpful. How is playing the guitar coming along for you?
I'm making progress little by little and having a lot of fun. Chord transitions are the hardest part for me. Picking melodies comes a little more naturally, but I'm struggling to incorporate more than just the main notes from the melody. I think I know the answer though... more practice. 😄 Do you think it's a bad idea to focus on fingerstyle techniques before mastering the basics of rhythm guitar?
That's great that you're having fun, that's the main thing when you're starting out. About chord transitions, there's a cool exercise to help with that: th-cam.com/video/Vk74avnLjkc/w-d-xo.html -It helps, I actually still use it sometimes when I'm dealing with chords I don't normally use. About adding more than the main notes from the melody, you might just try playing the base note and letting it ring at each measure or chord change and then playing the melody over that. It's simple compared to a lot of fingerstyle music but it will give you the structure of the song. I expect it would also be a good challenge/exercise for you. As you get more comfortable you can add in some harmony notes to the melody. I often do this just by picking 2 strings with my 2 picking fingers (instead of just the melody note) and I often just use the adjacent note in whatever chord I'm playing. -It fills it out a bit. Eventually you can work up to arpeggios. About your question, I don't think it is a bad idea to focus on fingerstyle before learning rhythm guitar. The art of strumming is pretty much useless in most fingerstyle arrangements. It's a completely different skill and it's not really that relevant. I'm sure there are some great fingerstyle players that aren't very good strummers. I was a rhythm guitar player first but I hardly ever strum now. I hope that helps.
@@JoshSnodgrassLessons Thanks for the advice! That chord change exercise makes a lot of sense. I'm going to start incorporating that into my practice sessions. And that's really helpful to have some ideas for the first steps beyond the single note melody.
@@reedhewitt The first song I ever learned as a fingerstyle guitar song was "What Child is This". I know it's a weird time of year to work on this song but I have a lesson with some good arpeggios: th-cam.com/video/0RKezkkgt9Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-mPf0wQqNEiCQvUq

Hey Josh. Video and recording are great,,what r using to record?
Hi, I have a video where I show my recording process here: th-cam.com/video/DAJxGy11FOY/w-d-xo.html
Josh, I recently came across your TH-cam hymn site. I absolutely love it. I am a 72 old starting out to learn guitar for probably the fourth or fifth time in my life. I can strum some cords and play few songs. However, what I have always wanted to do is play the melody of hymns with some picking, exactly what I hear you doing. I love to sing hymns but being to play them one day would be a blessing. As I grow in my capabilities I hope to make use of your lessons. Thx for what you, David
Hi David, Thanks so much for the encouragement. I had to "restart" learning guitar a few times as well. Stick with it, you can do it.
Hi Friends, the tab isn't free anymore but is now part of this tab book: www.joshsnodgrass.com/tab/hymn-songbook-2
Thank you for your lessons, but I don’t understand at 10 minutes and 52 seconds in your video when you count one and 23 I don’t understand why you were only picking single strings when the first line of notes should be three strings one then and 23 I don’t understand that. Why are you only picking one string when the tab when the musical notes say three
Hi Doug, that's a good question. I looks like I goofed up there. You're right that on that first beat I should be picking the lowest string for the bass note of that G chord and then the 2 highest strings at the same time but I didn't do that there for some reason. Sorry about the confusion.
Where is the free tab ?😂😂😂
Hi Doug, I'm sorry, the free give away was only for the first few weeks after I posted this video. It's now part of a tab book here: www.joshsnodgrass.com/tab/hymn-songbook-2
Where is this track available?
The video with me playing it is here: th-cam.com/video/QTk6dWrQ9ks/w-d-xo.html It will be out in iTunes and all of those similar sources on March 21st. It will be on my new album titled "Hymns - Acoustic Guitar Volume 3

Thanks! God bless you too!
Thank you for taking the time and sharing this😊
Good video, much appreciated.
Hello Josh. I really enjoy your music. Question(s) about the tabs. I’ve noticed a red 2 on the low E string. When I slow the video down I don’t see you playing it. What does the red number mean? Are you playing that note? Thank you. God Bless!
Great question. I am using a "drop D capo" so the red 2 is actually a "minus 2". It is the string left open by the capo so it's 2 frets lower than the capo. I know it's confusing since I am using that unusual capo but I think it's awesome for making it easier to play the chords and melody at the same time.
Thank you!!!!
