Building a MTB Trail With a Rake? Trail Building Competition
มุมมอง 1.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Two trail builders compete to build a trail using only a rake & saw to win! Most of use have heard of a "rake and ride" trail. It's when the builder can build an entire MTB trail with only a rake. Often these are flow trails in the forest and they are built by raking away the top level of loam and then riding it as is. That being said! We decided to take it a step further by challenging each ot...

      If it's thick and mossy, a hoe will cut through really well. If you're talking about loam (built-up pine needles and debris) a rake works well to clear it before using hoe to bench the trail. You really want to make sure to not include soft material into your trail because it may not compact well and break away while riding.

    Even with an out slope you will get water running down the trail after a tread has been burned in from wheels. You did Roman mention the grade reversal which then will automatically direct water. I believe in insloping trails Especially when a corner dictates a berm. Then all water is removed at a drain, or grade reversal. Just like how roads are built just on a smaller scale.

    Yeah I found to put in jumps you really need a wide bench or a fall line trail because the visual doesn’t allow you to send it if you’re cramped for space. Maybe try to open up the bench on the landing.

      @@RAWAdventuresMTB That would be 37 1/2% which is outrageously steep, thanking maybe 40 m in climbing. That would be 5% and obviously if you claimed 80 m that would be 10%, and it really looks like you kept it well below that. Run a Strava on it and see what stats you get. BTW I am here in the states and not like percentages make any difference between metric and SAE, But I am more familiar with miles, and feet. So I’m thinking a half a mile of climbing with 150 to 200feet of Elevation gain.

      @@RAWAdventuresMTB no videos, hopefully soon, but like I said just like roads and most bike parks are constructing like this. It does disrupt the sheeting of the rain water so drains have to be thoughtfully placed as well as frequent. But I wouldn’t inslope, a left-hand corner with the upslope going to the right , I will obviously outslope that to create a natural berm, also will be one of my drains. You do a great job in explaining factors, and procedure, not to mention a good looking end product.

    • @RAWAdventuresMTB
      @RAWAdventuresMTB 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never done that before. I'm sure some people do that because sandbags can compact and become rock solid. The problem would be that the bags would break over time and eventually you will just be left with dirt which doesn't make for a very strong bench. I'm sure there are some types of bags out there that last nearly forever though, I just don't know of any

    • @jeffreythompson6282
      @jeffreythompson6282 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RAWAdventuresMTB my soil has very high clay content and is rather rocky, it's just small rocks. My want for the bags is almost more to hold the shape until it will finally rain (this is socal) and the soil can really solidly. After that I don't think the bags themselves will really be needed assuming the slope isn't too crazy. I was actually thinking of going with burlap (which breakdown quick) as that's less concerning to the land owner. I suppose this would ultimate be a half bench. I'll have to think about it more...
