1967 USS Nahant AN-83
The video was originally taken by myself on a Super-8 movie camera, then converted to VHS tape and now to digital. It was shot about 1967 while cruising around Florida and the Caribbean.
The design of the Nahant was that of a net layer. During times of war, using the 'horns' on the bow, it would drag large nets across the mouth of a harbor. This would prevent submarines from entering.
She was launched on launched 30 June 1945 and decommissioned for the last time on 30 September 1968, after a collision at sea which did damage to her mast. On 15 October 1968 she was sold to Uruguay, and became ROU Huracan (BT-30).
For more information on her go to google and search for: "uss nahant an83" with out the quotes.

Per Fred Schaeffer: "The Labor Day weekend provided perfect weather for walking and biking on the Walkway. The attached video provides a good idea of how beautiful it was. I going less than 5 miles an hour although it might appear that I was going faster. I've biked over 1000 miles on the Walkway since it opened."

Walkway Over the Hudson - Past, Present and Future
มุมมอง 83K15 ปีที่แล้ว
Walkway Over the Hudson is a project which is turning the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge, a 19th century engineering marvel, into the longest bridge walkway in the world. It is being hailed as the centerpiece for New York States 400th anniversary of Henry Hudsons famous voyage in 1609, up what is now know as the Hudson River. The gala opening ceremony will occur during the first weekend ...
During World War II, as a young boy, our apartment had a wonderful view of the bridge. I was always on the lookout for trains that carried our tanks on flat cars.
Memories...
My Dad... Lt.Robert J.Cooke was skipper of the Nahant when it was in Little Creek ,Va.during the Korean conflict ( 52 and part of 53).I was 5 years old at the time but recall going on his ship...did not realize back then that he was the Captain...he has passed down lots of stories ...one in particular about what he did with the ship during hurricane Hazel.I remember he had a cigarette lighter with the picture of the nahant on it .If anyone has one of those ,I would love to buy it to pass on to his greatgrandson!
Actually...dad was skipper in 53 and part of 54 !
My father worked as a flagman on the caboose for the New Haven Maybrook line. When I was seven (1964) he took me with him to work, and I first crossed that bridge in the caboose with him. The second time, and just before he retired about a year later, he took me again, this time I got to ride in the lead locomotive! I cherish those memories. Boh times we were traveling west bound to Maybrook. Little did I know that only a year later, (1969) I would lose my dad due to a heart attack. So yes, that bridge has a place in my heart. I still live in the area, and have walked it many times
I grew up in Nahant, MA and am a member of the local American Legion Post. We honored the ship in 2015 on the 70th Anniversary of her commissioning. We commissioned a museum-grade scale model of the ship which is now on display in the Town Hall. The ship's bell is also in the collection of the Nahant Historical Society. :-D
Thanks for posting this. I as well am a member of the American Legion. I live on the Cape and think I might head up that way, if I can get my wife to join me. Anyway, I'd love to see that scale model of the ship. Curious how you were able to get the ships bell, as she was decommissioned and went to Uruguay. Did you ever sail on her?
@@TommyB427 No, never sailed on her. I was USMC 2004-2010, so well before my time. I'm not sure how we came by the ship's bell. We had a former crewmember visit us in 2015 for the Anniversary Ceremony. He reported that one of his old jobs was to polish the ships' bell when he was aboard in the mid-60's. He was thrilled to see it again.
mamaring81, Just so you know I'm trying to track down the location of this ships bell. I spoke with the local town clerk, as well as contacting the Naval Archives. Might there be anyone in your American Legion group that might remember any of this?
@@TommyB427 I believe the bell is in the custody of the Nahant Historical Society. A quick web search will yield their information. They're an active group and should get back to you relatively quickly.
As the child of a train buff this is the soundtrack of my life. Great feed… (always late to the party)
Sadly, I lived just down the River from 1986 to 2006 but never saw this historic project started or finished! Maybe someday in the near future, I will be able to return to the Hudson Valley and take a walk across... thanks to all of the heroic efforts, dedication and perseverance!
Here i was in Boone nc, in an antique store and I actually found old postcards of Poughkeepsie!, quite a few of them were the Poughkeepsie train bridge, being I was born in Poughkeepsie I jumped at the chance and bought them all
We started the rebuild of this bridge using wood with Americorp before they ran out of money no honorable mention?
It was no joke going from beem to beem putting down the grates with no safety harnesses or anything... crazy
SILTA
Long live New Haven, other railroads ran on the bridge like Erie, New York Central, but New Haven owned it...
My father served on the USS Nahant from 1962 to his discharge in November 1964. Thank you for sharing! Dad’s going to love seeing this!
I'm glad and hope he does enjoy it. I served on her starting in 1967 until she was ultimately decommissioned and sold to Uruguay after we had a collision at sea.
I visited Poughkeepsie in 1961 or 1962, mainly to see the New York Central, whose main line ran along the eastern shore of the Hudson River. The bridge was then used by the New Haven, which ran freight trains across it while I was there.
I'm glad the circus is gone. I hope they keep their promise toi take good care of the animals and let them live out their lives in good stead.
Can you give me feedback on my gopro review on my channel?
Great pictures & footage highlighting a big piece Poughkeepsie's history.
If the new haven rr didnt die this bridge would still be in use today.
My Father was stationed on the USS Nahant from 1964 till he was discharged in 1966. Thank you for sharing.
good job. I love Poughkeepsie
One of the greatest restoration projects of all time. Love the 19th C. engineering. Almost exactly the same time as the Forth bridge in Scotland opened. (Great scene in the movie "The 39 Steps.")
I love the Walkway and the history of the entire area. I live in an apartment building underneath the Walkway in the "Little Italy" section of the city. My building was originally a single family home built for an Italian family who worked on the Walkway construction. There's a beautiful fireplace in my bedroom!
I love this bridge! My Grandfather managed freight crossing that bridge during the NYNH&H days. I spent a few Saturdays up there in the mid 1990's when the Walkway group first got started.. Fun times!
Thanks for sharing Dominic.
Fascinating history. Born and raised in the mid-Hudson region. Looking forward to walking this walkway on a visit into the area. thanbks so much for sharing...
Thank you for posting! It's fascinating history!
i like the rocky music that comes in at 2:03 plus the kid that pushes the other kid when he is looking at the camera....Whats the name of that rocky theme sounding music at 2:03?
It was the dream of Bill Sepe who got this project underway initially. He and a handful of others got the initial funding and made it accessible to the few who knew about the project and had an interest in it... It's sad that there is always so little mention of him, and most of the time, there is none at all in videos like this.
Yes I worked it with him under Americorp it was insane we made it pretty far across from the highland side until fpl cut off our access
I miss seeing the trains. watched it burn as a child I remember the day well:( Now It's a walk way. Better then nothing if not a TRAIN BRIDGE! :)
THIS IS A WONDERFUL VIDEO... THANK-YOU MR DETMER FOR SHARING IT...My father also inspired me in regards to trains ... and old planes.... and we sure do have to thank them for that ! And to those who don't know this...This WALKWAY would not have been done had it not been for Bill Sepe who had the dream and got the ball rolling... Thank-you Mr Sepe for sharing your dream and helping it become reality... ---------Google his name to learn more
I just learned alot, thank you.
Great video!!! Can't wait to run over the walkway tomorrow!
Hi Fred. Remember me? I'm the guy who produced the Walkway promotional video for you. You and your team did a wonderful job on the Walkway. Congratulations. Bob
Fantastic documentary of a wonderful gift to us & future generations.
I made it there this weekend and loved it. It's beautiful. People looked so happy walking with their families, dogs or riding bikes. Glad this is available for all folks, but especially for Poughkeepsie residents... great progress.
You really should go. I've biked across it once, and walked it a couple weeks ago. Great views of the Hudson and Poughkeepsie.
This bridge seemed destined to rot with neglect. Now seeing it as a renovated Walkway Over the Hudson it is so awe inspiring. It's amazing what can be done with positive people at the helm and public support. Can't wait to walk it.
I grew up just south of Poughkeepsie. I remember the fire in 1974 but did not really know the history of the bridge. Thanks for posting it - I really enjoyed learning it's history. I cannot wait to return to New York to take a walk across it.
they should have made penn central fix the bridge and solicit traffic through the maybrook gateway. if the bridge burned 10 years later the NYS&W would probably be running into new england right now
The fire was arson by penn central because they said the line was non profitable.
Wonderful Project, Wonderful Documentary. You brought the bridge back to life. It is a pleasure to stroll and enjoy the views -- 212 feet above the majestic Hudson River. I've been telling all my friends. We plan to come back often. Many thanks.
Great video! I hope that people use it and it would be great to have a road race over it too! Beautiful area of the USA- hope people enjoy it!
It's sad that it zooms from '74 to '07....without mention of the "incubator" stage and Bill Sepe. Just thought I'd mention it myself. Congrats to Fred Shaefer and company for the realization of this marvelous project. Hooray!!!!!!!!!
Yeah i was apart of that initial rebuild team back in 96 i think it was until fpl cut off our access on the highland side
Marvelous video! I remember the bridge sixty years ago. Good Luck!
Beautiful documentary! Well done! 5-star!
I can remember, as a child in 1974, riding in the car on rt 9 and looking up as we passed under the bridge and seeing the twisted, damaged tracks. Then one day, they were gone. I didn't learn why until much later. Gonna walk the bridge tomorrow for the first time, and marvel at the fact that I'm standing on 125 years of history.
I lived in Poughkeepsie for many years, was traveling on Rt 9, as part of my job, went under the the bridge as it burned that May day in '74. I am so glad the walkway dream came true! Excellent video! Kudos!
Took another walk on it yesterday with the family.. Likely the last warm day we're going to see this year. Oh My God, why would any leafers go to Vermont when you can see this much right here? Been a Poughkeepsie resident all my life, and this is easily the best thing that could have happened to the area!!!
BRAVO! GREAT job on the video!
Thanks for the video. Good job! The history is fun to see. I have not walked it yet, but hope to soon.
awesome video!! I grew up in Poughkeepsie in Rip Van Winkle by the train station and can remember always wondering about the day I could walk that old railroad bridge. well, I came back east for a family visit and took a trip back up the Hudson last weekend. 20 years later and the dream of walking that bridge came true! amazing views from up there.
thank you so much for making this video!
Wow, do you by any chance have digital copies of your pictures that you could send to me? I'd like very much to foward them to the Walkway chairman (Fred Schaeffer).
