Patrik Schumacher vs Mark Foster Gage Revisited
This is a discussion on the debate between architects @patrikschumacher2844 and Mark Foster Gage at Texas A&M College of Architecture in 2017. The debate centered around Schumacher's controversial statements at the World Architectural Festival advocating for the privatization of public space and the abolition of social housing. Gage, a friend and colleague of Schumacher's, challenged his views, leading to a heated exchange about the role of the architect in society, the merits of parametricism and object-oriented ontology, and the future of architectural discourse.
Here are some of the key moments from the debate:
● Schumacher defends his stance on the privatization of public spaces, arguing that it would lead to greater variety and innovation in urban design
● Gage challenges Schumacher's interpretation of neoliberalism and the 2008 financial crisis, arguing that it was a result of deregulation, not government intervention
● Schumacher criticizes Gage's interest in object-oriented ontology and aesthetic activism, calling them fads and accusing Gage of abandoning the technological sophistication of parametricism
● Gage defends his exploration of object-oriented ontology, arguing that it offers a way to think about architecture based on its inherent qualities rather than its relations to other objects
● The two architects engage in a lively debate about the relationship between parametricism and object-oriented ontology, with Schumacher arguing that Triple O is a rebranding of ideas already present in parametricism
● Gage argues that Parametricism is a technology, not a language, and that it is being adopted by architects of all styles, regardless of their theoretical stance
● A member of the audience, a computer graphics researcher, offers his perspective on the evolution of digital tools in architecture. He points out that new technologies often emerge and displace older ones, and that this process of innovation is ongoing.
The debate concludes with a discussion about the future of the architectural profession and the role of technology in shaping architectural design. Schumacher reiterates his belief that Parametricism has the potential to revolutionize the built environment. Gage emphasizes the importance of curiosity and intellectual exploration in the development of new architectural languages. Both agree that the use of computational tools empowers architects, enhancing their authorship and enabling them to create more complex and sophisticated designs.
This debate offers valuable insight into the current state of architectural discourse and the challenges facing the profession in the 21st century. It is a must-listen for anyone interested in the future of architecture and the role of technology in shaping the built environment.
