What did you use for plans on the riser?
@@user-wo7rz3yn4o I didn't. I just winged it basically. There are some plans out there though if you look..
No need to indicate the device in the chuck The reading in your coaxial device doesnt depend on it It will show good reading even if its not running true
Check out double boost channel on some mods on a mill similar to the Enco. I have a Hungda brand similar to the enco, mine is a floor model instead of a bench top.
what did you decide? do you say in the video?
Spacers are a great idea. Thank you.
Hi, if it's for sal, I'll pay you a good price 😅
Morse taper adapters for drill press, tailstock or headstock spindles
Where are the big mills? I only see baby mills
having to plan ahead ( order of operations) is something i had not considered as being an art or knack that is required to machine parts without loosing accuracy or as you put it ' painting yourself into a corner'. I love it now.. like preplaying a chess game in your head or on paper when not even near the workshop.
you could have added the a telescope function or offset to the riser you made (?)
Eric. Can you show a video of how you took apart the x axis table top?
I have the same Mill Mach.
3608407139
it is a very cheap part to change out yourself if you need to
It's the board..
I wish I could find a Clausing like that. Very nice
I'm getting dizzy
I think I saw a surface gage on the table behind the surface plate. That’s a much better tool to use with a test indicator than the magnetic indicator holder you were using. Anyway, that little vise should work fine with your bench top mill. Have fun with it !!
Thanks for the painting advice, much appreciated. Best wishes on your upcoming move with your son.
Thank you, Brian.
Great tips on painting. I'll be coming back to this video next time I paint a machine
Thank you
What are the things you prefer on the SB 10k over the Atlas 10/12s? Am I correct that they both have a .750ish spindle bore?
The Atlas lathes were designed to hit a price point, which made for some shortcuts like gears that aren't made of steel. The SB lathes are much higher quality and weigh substantially more
did you use a new oil seal? if so which one?
Oil seal for what?
@@secondarymachine7521 seal is pressed into the closure plate at the bottom of the spindle.
@@fcc9281 It's for grease, not oil. Yes, I replaced it. I ordered it directly from Causing, but don't have part number.
What are you using for that verticle way cover? Looks like fiberglass mat, maybe rubber? How is it secured at the bottom?
Both mills have thin rubber as protection. Screws and a long thin piece of metal, makes a “sandwich” which holds it in place.
I would buy a follow rest for my 10k and have a question. My gear changes all work very smooth with exception to the first tumbler in the "A" position. no matter what I do it will not engage even while turning the chuck. Any ideas?
It looks like it's barely done any work. Southbend, the most copied lathe ever made.
if you look down the ways with the light just right, you can still see the scraping all the way down it. Lots of life left in this one..
great start - thanks for the degreasing tips
Thanks for watching, Joell
Looking forward to the painting tutorial 😉
Thanks, Joell.
as the owner of a lovely, low use Model 9A, I would have held out for a heavy 10. the 10K is basically a 9A.
The 10k is a step up from the 9 for sure. I will have a heavy 10 someday if the right opportunity presents itself..
Oh man I should of gotten a southbend instead of a Japanese lol
What do you have?
McMaster Carr is top shelf. I usually get 2 day delivery and I live in Texas.
How much? .
Thanks! What year us it? Didn't think anything with sleeve bearings was anywhere but a museum.
👍👍😎👍👍
Keep 10K or put on the large dials. I am second owner of a privately owned 10K 3ft with large dials. Go to lathe with collects.
I may swap the large dials onto my lathe..
**Ace Rust Stop will be the paint. Not Rust-Oleum..

Damn,,, it looked cold there in the workshop with the visible breath coming out of your mouth. Anyway I have enjoyed your channel for a while now and I’m wanting to flick you a few NZD in order to in some way encourage you in your TH-cam endeavours. Let me know how to do this, I support only a few makers on TH-cam by the occasional donation and you qualify for my meagre attempt at encouraging you guys to keep making videos.
Thanks Eric,,, such enthusiasm which is inspiring to a person like me. You are definitely a glass half full person.
Thank you Brian.
Very cool ! You've got some nice machines there .
Soon to be nicer, Ed. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment..
Oh brother, toss that thrust bearing into junk, don`t waste evaporust on it... A bearing that has had any amount of rust in it is dead... No amount of evaporust and grease will fix a ruined bearing... Evaporust the gears and other stuff, that is worth the time, and is not as ridiculously critical as bearing surfaces... Speaking of bearing surfaces, those spindle bronze bearings look nice! All the best and kind regards! Steuss P.s. Looking forward to the painting series!
The problem with just tossing that bearing is that you literally can't buy that bearing anymore. I will at least attempt to bring it back. So far the rust that is on the machine appears to be pretty light and I think the bearing is primarily filled with bad grease...fingers crossed..
@@secondarymachine7521 Huh? Can`t you find a replacement part? I know that machines can come with morbidly stupid bearings and bearing dimensions which are not offered lest ordered as a custom bearing, but hell, there should be something that can replace it? Even if it is a needle thrust bearing... Yeah, i saw the thing, it could be mostly oxidized grease, but i tend to air on the pragmatic surgeon`s methods when dealing with bearings if I even sense a hint of crunch or any nonsense about it that isn`t as smooth as butter... Hopefully it`s just junk grease, if not, well, there is a part that would be worth making on a cnc grinder or even a competent lathe with the ability to produce supreme bearing finishes... I mean, thrust bearings are as simple as it gets, just a tad more complex than a simple bronze bush or bronze thrust washer... The balls are industrial lego and can be had in any material needed, and the races are literally precision grooved washers... The cages, well, they are a bitch, but those could be easily made differently and allow the bearing to function just as good... A decent cnc lathe with the ability to make such races could easily make the cages by just p.c.d. drill-reaming a chunk of bronze or brass to adequately space out the bearing balls... Shit, a good manual set of machines could do it just as well on a 1off basis... Kind regards and best wishes(especially regarding the bearing situation)!
No, you can't get this baring anymore. I do think someone on ebay is selling a thrust bearing that will make it go, but I don't want that on my lathe if I can avoid it. This bearing was made for Southbend and long since unavailable unless you buy used.. @@camillosteuss
@@secondarymachine7521 Hell, if you don`t mind, write down the specific dimensions and ball size for me... I am not promising anything anytime soon, but once i get a new shop built, contend with all of my machines that need an overhaul or a service, and finish dealing with all the shit that i severely overlooked - I will likely add that bearing to a list of parts that i will be making and offering... Yeah, i get not wanting to just compromise willy nilly with random - possibly adequate bearings, especially if no true-to-type replacement is to be found... Regarding the dimensions, it`s od, id, ball size, race thickness(i assume both are the same), assembled bearing thickness(groove calc. through previous sizes), ball amount and that`s it really, as i will likely be making the cages out of bronze(if nothing, it will look better in tandem with bronze spindle bearings)... Now, preferably, all dimensions would be in sub-micron range, but for what this bearing is, a micron readout will do quite well... I will draw a tech print and insert it into my folder until the time i can get down to biz... You needn`t rush, but if/when you find some time to do so, i would appreciate it, and i think that one day, a lot of people will too... All the best!
Why not just Give prices ? What we want to hear .
You're the ONLY person that has asked..
I don't know , I would guess others in the market for a lathe are interested in what he paid for them ?
What you pay will have a lot to do with your location. Things on the West coast are more expensive than the Mid West as an example.@@edflower109
What spindle taper do you have? MT2 or BS7
This one was MT2
Nice score! Finding one with all the horizontal conversion parts is pretty rare. Although, part of the reason all those horizontal milling parts get lost is because they were so infrequently used.
An early Bridgeport round ram with the 36" table is a great machine for home shop guys. You can find them with the J head, which takes R8. The original M head is a MT2 spindle, shorter quill travel, no power down feed. Anytime I see one of those Clausing mills on the west coast, the seller is asking crazy money. I have a full size Bridgeport, which is a big step up from my last mill (Burke Millrite), but if I ever need to sell it and downsize, I'd probably get the HF knee mill, which is the same machine as that Enco
Hello from Washington!
At least your machines are relatively small. I bought a lathe that is practically the same as the one I already had but one model newer and in better condition but they weigh 5,000 lbs each
That floor looks slippery....
Lol. That spot that looks like it is glossy is actually just white spray paint. But you're right, it did look like it would be slick...
Repair kits are sold for the backgears that is an easy peasy repair. Google online.
I can stop if I need to..well maybe not...I have a 200 year old lathe, aSouthbend and a complete Atlas with a full set of tooling.
There's something about vintage cast iron..
@@secondarymachine7521 Super cool. I wish I could save all the old machines.
Very nice machines. Love your work
Thank you
I have a 9" engine lathe from them
I think I might be able to repair the pully with care as *bronze type flame repair with flux rod. Understanding the outer radius might be difficult if existing damage or heat process repair cause distortion. I have resorted to ebay for some small parts and continue to study best upgrade as to my SB 9C. It's SN 62016. I traded a day and a half of fitter work for the lathe, stored outside and where I have cleaned and repaired to basic functions. I find I so like it's useful component as to my workshop. I watch Max Grant's Swan Valley channel and have gained real insight to repair some of the features. Watching with interest and delighted to see your new machines in progress. Regards, McGary
Want to know how to break the teeth on a bull gear? Engage the back gear and don't pull the pin on the bull gear to lock the plot up to break the chuck loose from the spindle.
