Union Omaha supporter here. I'm gratified to see and hear the enthusiasm. If I can offer any insight, I would simply advise that you urge your club ownership and management to be aggressive, but deliberate. Initial club investment should go to players and supporter engagement, in that order. For players, you're right - most should be in the 21-25 age range. But you should also have about 3 Crash Davis types - older guys who have bounced around, have a lot of wisdom and experience, are good enough to play a game for a living, and want to postpone delayed adulthood for another year or two. Ideally, the older guys would be your goalkeeper, a pivot, and a big physical #9. Let the younger guys be your wings, fullbacks, and playmakers. Don't worry (yet) about a club specific stadium and all the other trappings of professional football. We still play in a minor league baseball park. It sucks. The sight lines are wrong. The pitch dimensions are truncated. The surface is trash because the infield needs to be re-sodded and the mound needs to be shaved down before every match. It's a horror. But, it's become a huge advantage because visiting teams hate playing there. You'll see when your club visits Omaha. We're the most successful club in the league, five years in, and we're just now beginning construction of a proper park. Turn your relative remoteness into an advantage. Our closest rival is Madison - five hundred miles away. Become a distant outpost and turn your ground into a fortress - a hornet's nest where angels fear to tread. I look forward to welcoming you to the league. But, you had best saddle up. Our warm Midwestern hospitality ends at kick-off.
What a name for a club Hearts of Pine! Is it inspired from Hearts of Midlothian in the Scottish league?
The "Heart" in Portland is an homage to the late Valentine's Day Bandit who anonymously plastered the city with red hearts annually for decades. The heart became symbolic to a lot of locals.
Loved being the live audience for this episode. Great stories about Kennedy Park and why soccer is so important in Maine!
Still not over the emotional rollercoaster. 2025 season can't come soon enough!
So so good
I'm a Union Omaha supporter. I'm excited to welcome you to the league. USL writ large is marketing itself as "the beating heart of American soccer". The league structure aims to grow the sport from the grass roots, rather than saying, "Thanks for the half billion dollars - here's your franchise". Expectations: Atmosphere is what you make of it. Forward Madison has the best organized and most enthusiastic supporter base in the league. My club has strong support, but is hamstrung, from a perspective of match day atmosphere, by its stadium, which it shares with a AAA baseball team ( 🤮 ). We are building a club specific stadium on our downtown riverfront, and it will be awesome. Standard of play... If you are accustomed to supporting a top tier European club or even an MLS club, prepare yourself. USL One clubs are professional to be sure. However, the players are far from world class. It is entertaining, but the players simply don't have the level of talent and quality that you see in high level leagues. I have supported Celtic for decades and love the club dearly. I am equally proud to support my hometown team. Think of American football. If you are accustomed to being a Patriots fan, but also support the D3 liberal arts college where you were the second string punter and received your English degree, that's perfectly acceptable. You don't expect 4.2 40s and Patrick Mahomes's arm talent from the D3 team, but you can still enjoy the experience of going to the game. Expect talk of the implementation of promotion and relegation. The USL brass wants it, and the fans want it. It's a question of organizing the pyramid in such a way that is fair and makes sense. That is the hurdle. I have ideas on the topic, but I'm just a schmuck from Nebraska. The Jaegermeister Cup is a great addition to the league schedule. I would like to see clubs place more emphasis on it. Bring your "A Game" and enjoy.
RE: open tryouts. These are a must for any lower division club, especially one in its infancy. The odds of finding your captain or a golden boot winner are pretty long. But what it does for local interest and enthusiasm, filtering through the local youth ranks, is immense. From a pure footballing perspective, the best realistic outcome might be a couple prospects who can pad out the squad and serve as role players. But the supporter interest it generates, as well as the incentive for the local U13-U15 club player to extend himself - priceless. I support Union Omaha. We started with local tryouts. Five years later, we've got three finals appearances, two Cups, three Shields, and two Open Cup MLS scalps nailed to our wall. We are the gold standard of this league. We respectfully invite you to have a go at us. It appears you're going about it properly. Best of luck to you. Up the Owls Vivan los Búhos PS I love the kit and the crest. I thought our crop circles kit was on point. Your home kit is sharper, IMO.
I love the enthusiasm and wish HoP and their supporters well. Buckle up and put on your big boy underpants... We here in Omaha need the competition. We've been dominating this league since we showed up and would love to greet a new club. Train hard. The best run club in lower division American soccer is waiting for you. And we don't mess about. Cheers, all. Up the Owls Vivan los Búhos
Love it! Can't wait. UP THE HEARTS!
Two stars on the crest, three shields, and MLS scalps nailed to the wall. That's the USL1 benchmark, and it lives in Flyover Country - Omaha. Come get some. I really like the vibe your club is putting out. And I'll give credit where it's due - the kit and crest are very nice. Looking forward to the season.
Well done fellas!!!
Up the Hearts!
Is there a tryouts for the heart of Pine?
