During the pandemic I revisited a childhood passion of astronomy and started learning astrophotography. A few years later I have taken that passion to another childhood hobby of flying model planes and drones. Mixing photography and aviation has been the most exciting experience! I am FAA Licensed for drones. I now run a side business doing aerial photography, real estate listings, construction videography and photography and everything else that involves and camera.
I hope you learn something from me as I continue to learn A LOT from this field. It is so much fun!!

Piney Creek Falls, TN - 05-05-2024
มุมมอง 368 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is my first time flying my drone at Piney Falls. We had the perfect conditions. It had just rained for few days so the falls were flowing good and we had regular cloud coverage with some sun that allowed for really really nice contrasting shots! I will definitely be going back to get more shots. This only a fraction of the video and images I got that day.

Drone Day 3
มุมมอง 329 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today I wanted to test and make sure that the drone RID was working. I learned that the drone had to be in flight before a signal was broadcasted. For me, in the USA, flying the DJI Air 3 this is an automatic function. I have not found where this can be turned on or off. There is no need for option anyways since it is required now to have an RID broadcasting. I have seen though in some other co...

SAVE MONEY! ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY - WATCH THIS!! - Before You Buy Your Setup. Learn this Equation.
มุมมอง 1.3Kปีที่แล้ว
This equation helps you to figure out what camera you need to match with the scope you have or are going to use. Whether you're doing Deep Sky or Wide Field Astrophotography, This will help you to get cleaner images which in turn will make processing easier. This will save you TONS of money! Rather buying the wrong stuff, then trying to buy filters and adapters to make it work. Get the right st...
Guide Scope Hack
มุมมอง 2982 ปีที่แล้ว
Rather than spending another $150, AT ITS CHEAPEST, to get a guide scope setup. I found an amazing adapter from China to attach a 1.25" camera to a camera lens. IT WORKS!!! I needed to do some adjusting to the adapter still. But I hope this video helps any of you out there trying to do Astrophotography on a low budget. I hope this gives you some insight of what to expect if you take this route....
Lens vs Scope

I traded in my Canon camera for one of the first versions of the Celestron Nexstar telescopes. The Celestron 8, Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope. This video shows the comparison between the current 400mm Nikkor Pro lens I've been using with my Nikon, to the 2048mm focal length of the SCT telescope. It is a phenomenal difference!! And I Love It!!!! Music I Use: Bensound.com/free-music-for-videos "Ev...

Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer Pro, Ioptron Sky Guider Pro Tripod Hack
Fantastic job
Absolutely fantastic piece of work, Jon - you are mastering your dromne beautifully!
beautiful
How’s life?!like!you made nice dji, 🤘
Very interesting information, thank you for sharing. I dont believe i have heard someone talk about this equation before, so that means time for some digging and reading about it!
Ok, pixel size between 1-2 arc sec is best. But it's another problem - periodic error. If you have SW Star Adventurer it has go periodic error around 1,5 arc sec, and even with guiding error will be around 1 arc sec. So probably the best is to have 1,5-2 arc pixel scale to avoid problems with trackers (especially over 180s exposures) or get harmonic mount (like AM3/AM5) and guiding. Also at very wide field AP like on 135mm it will be extremaly hard to gave under 2 arc sec pixel scale (you would need aroud 1' pixel size sensor). In Siril you can drizzle undersampled images to get better results
Thanks for the comment! I want to research this. It makes sense!
Hii pls reply I have a telescope Celestron 114 eq can I use my telescope tripod to put star tracker on it
I can't remember the threading of the 114EQ mount head bolt. But I do know the you can thread that bolt completely out of the tripod. You then would want to buy a bolt long enough to fit through the 114EQ tripod in order to fasten the Star Tracker on the tripod. So, Yes! Definitely it is possible. There may need to be some modifications done to the tripod, but it could be used for a tracking mount.
@@JPograsPhotography thanks sir solve a big doubt
@@JPograsPhotography can you suggest what type of bolt screw I need can you give Amazon or something link to buy that thing
Why 206?
Thanks, great info. I have a Canon 6Da and a Canon R5, and plan to use my Canon EF 100-400mm L lens to shoot nebulae. Using the equation, my 6Da is over the threshold of 2, but as long as I use the R5's crop mode, and zoom to at least 450mm, this camera-lens combo falls within the rule of thumb. So that is what I will mainly use. It would have been nice to use the modified camera, but I'm sure I'll get good results with the R5.
Share your results! I'm interested to see what you were able to get. Thanks for the comment!
Crop mode doesn't change pixel size. R5 has got 4.39µm so you will get 2,26 pixel size on 400mm - so really small undersampling, you can lose it by using drizzle
Great minds think alike... I have just started in astrophotography and didn't want to spend ££s on an expensive tripod which could only take 15-20 lbs. I have ordered the Bosch BT 160 from Amazon. I am going to modify it your way for the base but not the legs as going to use a sandbag holder to hold powerbank and extra bits. Got a small compass to stick to the base to align North and some RV bubble levelers to easily level the legs.
might add that the oversampling threshold is affected primarily by astronomical seeing. the thicker and less stable your atmosphere is, the more bloated your stars will be, meaning that oversampling threshold (1"/px in this video) will need to be higher. This is why space telescopes with a large focal length can still get pinpoint stars. Personally i dont think too much about over/undersampling, especially under. It's quite easy to process with starnet or the new starX plugin, but good to keep in mind. great tutorial!
Thanks for that tip! That's a good point! I agree with you too, I find the images look much better and are easier to process when the stars are undersampled as opposed to over. But, it's at least a starting point; Rather than buying more and more stuff to make it work, (my mistake in this field, lol). Thanks for the tip on the plugins as well. I've not yet found a GREAT one for the price. I'll check them out!
I bought this same tripod a few months ago, just have to change the mounting bolt to a 3/8s I also installed and table underneath to hold the legs together and at the right dimension. I also put RV levels on three side of the head. Works great 👍
Awww RV levels are an awesome idea!!!! That's Sweet!!
Did you first put on the EQ wedge?
@@Risici_Bloom Depends on if I'm confident the tripod will not be moved while installing the EQ wedge. I typically like to level the tripod first. Then install the wedge.
tighten a lashing strap around the legs
Very nice. What product are those black-headed bolts that you screw into the riveted holes with the black stops on top of them? What are those? And what kind of wing nut was that exactly in the middle?
The black knobs are furniture levelers www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071J55HWK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1 They're called a wing screw, wing nut or butterfly screw. I found mine at Home Depot in the specialty fasteners section. I also found these on amazon that may work? There are many options out there. www.amazon.com/Threads-Knobs-Diameter-Threaded-SKP-3/dp/B01H12D5PG/ref=sr_1_23?crid=OFUN8P8ADE1T&keywords=wing+screw+3%2F8-16&qid=1642714049&sprefix=wing+screw+3%2F8-16%2Caps%2C116&sr=8-23 Thanks for the comments!!
@@JPograsPhotography Thank you!
Which is better for astrophotography? The star adveturer 1 or the iOptron Smartstar Cube Pro AZ? 🤔
I've never had experience with those exact models. But I used the Ioptron Sky Guider Pro and the Sky Watcher Adventurer Pro. Both were great!! But I favor the Ioptron!
Great idea 👍
I am looking for one of these. Had the idea when I got one last month, Home depot used to carry them in the store, now they are out of stock. Maybe alot of photographers are using them? lol But thanks for the video. You answered some questions I had about them.
Great ideas! I was considering this route as the tripod I ordered became backordered
I was gonna do the same thing with that same tripod and I came to the conclusion it would be too many alterations. I ended up with the K&F Concept carbon fiber tripod for $180 and it is great. A great tip for adding extra stability to a tripod is hang your bag underneath or use a bungee cord and tent stakes driven into the ground.
Great video. I started using a survey tripod for astrophotography last week and as long as I push it firmly into the ground, it tends to remain fairly stable. I also used the same washer approach for attaching the azimuth base. Rock solid.
That's awesome!!! I'm so happy to hear others are having success with this approach. 😃
I have a 3d printer so im going to go get one of these and print a leg stop system and a adapter that fits in that hole. I'll also adapt the leg lock system so it can hold some weight.
Thanks for the hack, much appreciated :) Agree about the tripods being really expensive at least at this stage of my journey! A question about the legs movement range extending too far. Why is it a problem? Is it that they can accidently move and need to be stopped (too loose)? Trying to decide if the leveling tripod would still work with only the center bolt change and not the leg stoppers.
Indeed a very practical hack! This camera tripod issue is very common and nobody discusses it when they talk about trackers. Thanks for addressing it.
nice work!
You used the same rivet machine to install the screw inserts from the first video?, thanks for posting this idea
Yes. I am So sorry for such a late reply!! Please forgive me. I did not think this account was getting any attention.
Simple but effective...Great hack buddy, thanks for sharing. :)
