You are talking about the attitude some atheists have towards religion, but this really has little to do with atheism. Atheism is basically either the disbelieve in the existence of (a) God(s), or the believe in the non-existence of (a) God(s)... that's it... As an atheist you can have a positive or negative disposition towards religion and still not being convince on the existence of (a) God(s). Ofcourse with the belief in the non-existence of any gods, come the conclusion that religions are baseless. But even that cannot determine whether a religion can be seen as beneficial anyway, or as negative. Much of Dawkin's "rhetoric" as you say it, is targeted at a number of organized religions.
Well, here he's talking about the new atheism which has been emerged in early 2000s, not Atheism. Not all atheist are part of New atheism

Does this also mean there is "old atheism" too? Personally I'm from the 70's and the arguments and objections I've heard in the 90's haven't changed much to the objections and arguments I hear today.
