This was Beattys passion project but it never had a chance becoming the blockbuster or getting the recognition it deserved. A movie.audience in reagans America was never going to be sympathetic to the cause of the left/unions/revolutionaries. Those who grew up in the 80s.and even more so nowadays can hardly.understand the way life was for the american unimaginable suffering of working poor before and during the progressive movement, let alone understand those of the Russians.
@iceblue345 were you kidding or honestly didnt know? :) nicholson played playwright Eugene O'Neill, who had an affair with Louise Bryant (Keaton) during her relationship with John Reed (Beatty). ONeill, Bryant & Reed were all in their mid-20's at the time; it was years before ONeill became well-known for his plays. (Reed's fame came from his book of the russian revolution "10 Days that Shook the World" I've always wondered (and tried to find) it ONeill ever did write that love poem to Bryant..

Jack Nicholson’s last thin movie.
Was O' Neill really such an obnoxious creep .?
Alcoholics tend to me. Especially alcoholic writers.
He wasn't obnoxious - he was in love! It can make you do desperate things.
Nicholson is nothing like his typical screen persona in this movie.
Well I’m just learning that Phil Hartman dubbed some of Jack’s dialogue in this one so that might have something to do with it
harvey keitel and jack nicholson.that is a pair you wont se EVER again

Jack Nicholson! One of the greatest Actors of ALL TIME!
She embodies the naiveté of the petite bourgeoisie embracing socialism like orthodox liberalism to only get the bulwark of the entire proletariat

I wish Europe’s DVD format was compatible with the US. Otherwise, I’d spread this flick around on visits across the pond.
