Thanks! Love your sense of humor! Really enjoyable video! Ha yes, I shoot everything with pinpoint autofocus. Just used to it!! Good tips! But how do you sneak up on birds in the snow? Or prevent your fingers from freezing to your camera while waiting for one to show up??
Yes found your TH-cam page
Happy to have you here Michael! 👊
Thank you for the three good tips.
You’re welcome! Glad you found them helpful 😊
Loved this, Trav! 🤩After pausing the video several times (that Puffin is too cute for my attention span!🫣🤭), you made me realize that I don’t like overcast days due to my wrong expectations. I’m obsessed with shooting birds in flight-no matter what- yet the disappointment when, for example, I don’t have a dark background. As you said, living in this area we need to make friends with this weather 😅, so I’ll be out today and focus on perched birds to ease my anxiety 🥹
EXCELLENT! Here in western Montana most of the winter is cloudy so overcast light, but also bright background due to snow,. It makes the morning and evening darker, so typically mid-day is when I get the most overcast light for photos.
Great tips! Going to hopefully incorporate more photography along with my TH-cam videos this year and your guides are providing me with great tips!
That’s awesome! I hope you do, looking forward to watching them
Goof to know that I didn't have the wrong idea about overcast conditions. As a matter of the fsct, there were overcast conditions all day yesterday, and I actually found it better to shoot in. One particular experience was a lake I stumbled upon with over 50 Mute Swans. Normally, the feather highlights would get blown out, but the cloudy conditions were perfect for getting almost everything even.
Overcast conditions are great for getting photos of birds with white plumage! I hope your Swan photos turned out well. I live in the Pacific Northwest so if you don’t lean into shooting overcast and learn to adapt to it, you won’t be doing much shooting for a large portion of the year 😅.
sorry, but I really dislike overcast light. All it does is dilute colour, reduce the DR and provide a very poor background. Sure, sometimes you can't avoid it, but if I can, I'll hard pass.
Totally understandable! It’s definitely not everyone’s favourite light to shoot in. I live in the Pacific Northwest so you either get used to it or don’t shoot for a large portion of the year 😅.
@@travinthebush yeah, I get that. I've done my fair bit of shooting on overcast days too. I just really don't like it.
Another great video, I didn’t take my camera out today because of a cloudy overcast day with a little rain…this video opened my eyes, thanks!
That’s great to hear! I hope you get out there on the next overcast day 👊
Great video and tips!! You've changed my mind about overcast days 🙂
That’s awesome! 👊
It is your fault you focused on her nd she posed for u 😂
Thank You!
Very very seful tips. Especially the one about having a cluttered background. I rectnly snapped two pictures (much more, i suppose with burst shots) of Pileated Woodpeckers. One female and one male. The shots of the female are the only ones i can pick something out of due to only having a 600mm. I thought I'd be able to crop in in post, but I found out real quick that this wasn't going to work. Unfortunately, there was no other way to get close to either of them so it looks like ill have to either purchase an APSC body (cheaper option potentially) or sell my Sigma 150-600 and get the Sony 200-600 with one of the teleconverters. That'll be fun to figure out how to balance exposure since I'll be losing light.
👍
Thanks Tommy 👊
Hey! first time here; wow I see a Kea and Kookaburra- you must be based either in New Zealand or Australia!
Hey there! Nope 😅, I’m actually based in Canada. I just recently went on a month long trip to Australia and New Zealand and have tons of shots and footage from the trip. Still going through it all! I should mix in some Canadian birds into the video next time
@@travinthebush looking forward to seeing those as well! I recently travelled Aus and New Zealand. I am learning how to do some amateur photography!
@@labsdavidethat’s awesome and what a coincidence! I hope you had an awesome trip and got some great shots.
Good Tips 🔥🔥🔥 I now a good App it’s called (Picture Bird)
Haha absolutely love the tips and the ending 😂
Thanks 😂
great tips. thank you

Finally someone, and things, I can relate to in a practical way. Thanks.
That’s awesome and you’re welcome 👊
Great tips!
Thank you 😊! Glad you liked them
A good quick review of how to photograph birds. I don't disagree with anything you said. One technique I use is to take those fast shutter speed photos first and get a sharp image I'm happy with on the card. Then start dropping the shutter speed to allow for lower ISO. I usually start at 1/800th and have gotten as low as1/50th on a Carolina Wren and got tack sharp results.
That’s a great strategy! Get the sharp photo and then play around and see if you can get an even better result.
Bravo Trav excellent video agree on all 🎉👍👏
Thanks Cayce! Awesome to see you over here.
I enjoyed that Thankyou…love the Kookaburra toy in the background 😄
Thank you! 😊
Great video, thank you!!
You’re welcome! Glad you found it helpful 😊
Wow, such a beautiful bird and such beautiful shots! The subtle color in the dark parts of its face and wings is so cool.
Thank you 😊
Hey trav. I love sour instagram but appreciate that you try to share your insights with all of us. May I suggest getting a cheap clip on lav mic? You can record it on your phone and it makes your audio quality a lot better.
I actually picked up a cheap one and tried it, couldn’t stand the cord and it didn’t sound much better. I’m gonna wait and save my pennies and get a a good one. (I know, the space I’m in has a weird echo. I’m even use a Rode Mic on my camera and its no better)
Awwww its so cute :3
Thank you 😊
Wing Blur? Hell that's what I want for hummingbirds. I shoot at 1/350 to get the eye and body sharp but with blurry wings. It shows how impossibly fast they are. It's the way I see them when I look at them, and it reflects their high energy nature.
I want to try that next time I’m out shooting them. I sometimes get to focused on having a fast shutter speed that I forget to try out different effects. Thank you 👊
I think that second bird lost his neck in flight
😂
Don't be afraid of high iso, but use iso as low as possible. When the eye is sharp, the wings don't need to be when that indicates action. Not all pictures need to be similar.
Very true, great points!
I like wing blur with some definition
That’s great! I like it as well
Probably the best video on TH-cam on the subject. Bang on tips and really well put with appropriate examples. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much 🥹

I photograph wildlife and birds in flight with Pentax cameras i have my camera setting in user modes UI Autofocus Single T/ AV mode 1,200 - F8 U2 Continuous Autofocus T/ AV mode 1, 2100 F8 large birds in flight U3 Autofocus Single Small T/AV 1,200 -F8 U4 Autofocus Continuous Small T/ AV 1, 3000 - F8 Small birds in Flight Because i am in T/ AV Mode i can change the shutter spead with the front dial wheell and the Aperture with the rear dial wheel when necessary to get the proper Shutter Speed and Aperture to get a sharp photo Theses setting are for the Pentax K3Mark 111 camera with medium speed drive mode on the shutter and the Pentax 55-300 PLM WR 4.5- 6.3 Lens or the Pentax 150- 450 4.5 - 5.6 lens
That’s a great idea to set your U1-4 modes with settings for different situations. I do the same with video and for perched birds and birds in flight. Good idea 👍
I just came across your channel - wonderful stuff! Great information done with personality and humor. I’m a beginning photographer and I just recently bought a Canon R6 Mk 2 and the Canon 200-800 mm lens. You have a brand new subscriber, keep up the good work! Joe
Thanks Joe, awesome camera and lens combo! I hope you’ve been getting out and capturing some shots!
I shoot with a Canon 5D MK IV and I get outstanding results at 6400 iso in good light and noise isn't an issue 99% of the time.
That’s awesome!
Awesome tips Trav, and love the images you use as examples 👏🔥
Thank you 😊
Great tips!
Thank you! 😊
well, well..... more than questionable things....
Hello i have a d7500 with no motor in the Lens, how Can WE go go what to a Nikon Z something without selling my home in New Lens
I used a Nikon D7500 for years, love that camera. I would go with just updating the lens and wait on the camera. Try and find a used Sigma 150-600mm or Nikon 200-500mm on Facebook marketplace or a local used camera shop.
@travinthebush the problem is that actually, i have for more than 10k of Lens that will be useless if I go with a Nikon z
@@SKYBLOCK2006dang, that’s a tough situation. You go always keep your lenses but upgrade your camera to a D850. It’s still a great camera and you can get them used for a good price
This explains so much of the issues I'm having! Thank you so much Trav, looking forward to more content on here :)
You’re welcome! Glad you found it helpful
Love looove looooove this, Trav!👏👏 As a beginner using a mirrorless for the first time EVER, being able to see the bird is a treasure LOL And yes! Realistic expectations - and I'd add avoiding unhealthy anxiety haha - are key when out there. It's a fantastic - yet challenging - learning journey we should all enjoy. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience with us!
Thank you so much Lu! What Mirrorless camera did you just get? It definitely is fantastic and challenging, it’s why I love it. 😊
@ Fujifilm XT5 . The first camera I had was a point and shoot Nikon P1000. But I wasn’t too sure about upgrading Nikon due to costs and lack of experience 🤯 Found this guy’s helping me gain some confidence and it was more budget friendly 😅
Nice video - short and to the point 🙏👍
That’s my goal moving forward. Just get right to the info 🫡
Really helpful suggestions. Thanks, Trav!!!!
Thanks so much! Glad you found it helpful!
Excellent! For birds in flight, would turning eye detection off help the camera autofocus lock on quicker? The youtube Whistling Wings Photography recommends turning eye detection off for birds in flight.
That’s a great question! I could definitely see it being faster as it’s one less step for the camera to perform. For myself though, I wouldn’t do it. Main reason being that the Z8 eye detection is pretty spot on, even for in flight shots. I would rather have a sharp photo with the eye in focus vs a photo not totally in focus or not on the eye. I think it is a great tip if you are going for a once in a lifetime shot though. If you have one shot at it, like a rare bird, I might consider it.
#3 - not always the case. Sometimes, it is nice to show the bird in its environment - for example, a Golden headed Cisticola in reeds alongside a riverbed.
Totally agree! If a “busy” background can help tell the story of the birds environment, then that’s great. Something I definitely need to work more on.
@@travinthebush spot on. I think many people are so occupied with "detail" that they think they need to be super tight on the bird, no environment, just bird on a stick. That same with regards to megapixels too - 24mp does cut it, at least, if you learn bird behaviour and how to better approach them. For example. a few months ago, I got a rather nice shot of a Red-browed finch. I noticed a small group of them going back and forth to a dead tree lying on its side on the ground. I watched them for a bit and then approached. They took off. I kneeled and waited a few minutes and sure enough, they came back and I got a rather nice shot.
Yes 🙂 And have photos too 👍
Thanks for a great video and welcome to TH-cam! I was a victim of the midday heat haze in my last outing. Never fails to get me
Thank you, great to be here! I know right, heat haze is the worst 😅
