    What an amazing house, so thoughtfully designed by Lutyens. One day I'm coming to see it and the magnificent garden. I loved this video and commentary but the background music was an intrusion for me.

    I loved my weekends at Great Dixter with Christo and the ever-changing rota of guests… He was a beautiful, funny, charming and occasionally cantankerous darling man who gave great big hugs and was hilariously pernickety (about the type of chocolate that one could eat, the correct time of the day for champagne - only mornings) and I’ll never forget him. So lovely to see that his mission continues in his absence.

    Beautiful! How did you get tulips to flower at the same time with the rest of the flowers? Usually, they bloom before all other flowers?It’s amazing how color patterns are changing an yet, still everything is so connected with purple flowers and blends majestically. Great gardener!

    Wonderful video! I did a search for Greant Dixter after seeing a post by Colorado gardener Panayoti Kelaidis about an enchanting visiti he had at the gardens and a visit with Fergus Garett. I did some videos with Panayoti at his home garden for my channel and am very happy to find this video that explores gardens and those who nurture them.

    Oh my goodness. Thrilling. Thank you for not moving the camera too fast. Also, can anyone tell me what those tall blue/silver fern-like plants are?

    • @henrymiller8859
      @henrymiller8859 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cardoon, Cynara cardunculus. It’s a giant thistle and the wild relative of the globe artichoke (the one for pizza)

    • @nspector
      @nspector 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@henrymiller8859 Thank you so much. I wasn't sure I'd ever get an answer with so few views. Was hoping I could grow it, but I'm on the very upper edge of zone 7 -- by the water in southern Connecticut, so zone 6 is a stone's throw away. I don't think they'd make it through the winter here.

    • @henrymiller8859
      @henrymiller8859 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nspector Their foliage would be killed off in winter but they have a strong tap root to regrow from. You could try covering their crowns with a thick mulch over winter and that might help protect the buds. Unfortunately I dont know if that would be enough. Where I garden it rarely gets below -5 celcius.

    • @nspector
      @nspector 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@henrymiller8859 I could try that. But I just did that this past winter with some dusty miller that I grew from seed, which somepeople say can make it in zone 7. (We often go down to about -12 c once or twice in the winter, and can go below -17 every few years.) About 40% survived. That'd be a lot to lose with such a massive plant.

    • @nspector
      @nspector 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@henrymiller8859 Ah, just seeing artichoke plants in another video. (I have an ornamental garden, so very little experience with vegetables.) They they look quite similar but smaller, maybe 3ft. Sounds like they'd be even less likely to survive our winters, but maybe because they are smaller I'd be more willing to grow them as an annual? Or maybe I should just go for it and try the Cardoon. Ok, just thinking out loud here...

    This is a masterpiece of horticulture 💚. Truly wonderful. I saw the 🌟 garden in fall of 2000, and I am now rewarded with how it has developed since then. Magnificent 👏🏻👏🏻. ( Fergus, you were mowing the pasture👍) Mr. Christopher Lloyd led us around as a small group, and pebbled us with information, wisdom and “Spicy stories” 😘. I’ll remember It lovingly and always. Still on my top Bucket List to visit again. ( When stateside, I had my picture taken with the GENIUS FERGUS at a workshop.) I am a big fan. These videos are a true gift, thank You.
