Mackell was such an underrated player, those side of the net goals are an amazing talent. He was also very fast and a great all round player. Too bad for Boston that they didn't have the other talents to surround Mackell.

I played my first league game in 67 in Boston, I was 10. Played for Melrose. Won The Hockeytown Milk Cup in 82 and 84. Made it to Jr.A. Orr and the Bruins inspired us to greatness. For five decades Orr has been the example for us to live by. Always do your best, help people and never brag. As the years have past Bobby Orr the greatest player in NHL history, has become the greatest humanitarian the world has ever known.

I was born in 1961 and got to grow up watching Number 4 Bobby Orr. New England went from a couple outdoor and indoor Hockey Rinks to thousands in the 1970's, because of Bobby Orr. I forget what opposing team player said it, but he said, "The fastest guys in the NHL all have 3 speeds. But Bobby Orr has 2 additional speeds above those 3 speeds" All opposing NHL teams had no answer to Bobby Orr. 100 point scorers were few in the 1970's. Boston had 4 100 point scorers. Esposito, Hodge, Bucky, & Orr. But let's tell it like it is. Without Orr, none of the 3 are 100 point scorers. Orr was an assist machine. Teams double and triple teamed Bobby Orr, resulting in open Bruin players in open areas in front of the net. And Orr would somehow make great passes to set up his Bruin teammates. Orr was totally selfless. The expensive antenna on our roof was envied by all our middle class neighbors. My father bought the antenna because of Bobby Orr. My father was the fastest man in New England while at UMass in the middle 1950's. I was lightning fast like my father. I eon the 100 yard dash at the town 4th of July celebration in the 11 to 13 year olds category when I was 11. The 12 and 13 year olds hated this. So I pretended like I was Bobby Orr. Orr was the fastest player, the best passer, close to the hardest slap shot, and had the most accurate shot in the NHL. And Orr was selfless. Orr was a terrible loser. The Boston Bruins played on National TV stations on the weekends. Bobby Orr was the reason. NHL games on National TV Networks didn't exist before Bobby Orr and ended when Orr retired. Bobby Orr and the Big Bad Bruins were a national sensation in America and Canada. Orr was tough as they come. Orr fought well. Orr hit hard. Orr blocked shots. Killed Penalties. And was the leader of the best power play in the NHL. And the Bruins climbed in the stands after opposition knucklehead fans. Boston was down 6-2. Between periods quite Bobby Orr made a speech to his teammates and Boston ended up winning 8 to 6. My father, 2 brothers and I were 7 rows behind Peter Doyle, filming The Friends of Eddie Coyle. From Worcester we drove down route 9 or route 2 to Boston to watch the Bruins. The Boston Garden was tiny, filled with smoke, rats, and you were close to the action.

Most assists in a single season record, eclipsing Phil Esposito's record...by a defenseman who won the best defenseman award 8 years in a row.... including the seasons when he had the most assists is just beyond belief. The greatest player to ever play hockey and honestly, it's not even close.

How long would this guy have lasted if he could catch from one knee ? Hell , you kind of have to figure that were he playing today , the original pudge’s bat would have forced a great deal of organizations to seriously consider finding somewhere else for him to play defense . Who knows , he might have been able to play baseball in 5 different decades

I was blessed to be able to watch Bobby's entire career as a young teenager in central Mass.....he is the greatest player that will ever play hockey and a greater human being. People talk about records that will never be broken in sports but for some reason Bobby is never mentioned in those conversations. But, what he did when he won all four major awards in hockey as a defenseman will never happen again. Winning the scoring title in the NHL and winning the best defenseman award the same year, which he did twice, will also never happen again. That feat just doesn't even make any logical sense yet that's what he did. I think Bobby Clark put it best when he said after seeing Bobby play, "he needs to be in one league higher than this one...". He also said Bobby Orr is what what all hockey players everywhere should strive to be like both on and off the ice. He wasn't flashy...he didn't need to be....he was just so much better than everyone else and still would be today.

The director (I think) says that he wanted to make it as authentic as possible, and they show the 2nd goal of the game, Mark Johnson's, on the movie compared to the actual video from that 1980 game, and it matches perfectly. But....in the movie, the Soviet's 3rd goal, they have Jim Craig getting ran over, and them scoring in an empty net. In reality, that 3rd Soviet goal was a breakaway, and nobody touched Craig. They tried to make the Soviets look dirty imo.
