Theriso Gorge by car
An old friend from New Zealand dropped by, with a car, so we drove up to Theriso for lunch.
I often run this route (about 30kms return) so it was cool to see it without sweating.
Thanks for the ride Dan, and other adventures ;-)

Crete Marathon 2023
มุมมอง 364ปีที่แล้ว
This was my first race outside New Zealand, and the first time I've run a race on Crete. It's a mostly flat course along the coastline, and I was hoping I could finally finish in under four hours. At least I wouldn't have to worry about running into a howling southerly wind this time. No more freezing cold marathons for me.
Taper time
มุมมอง 54ปีที่แล้ว
It's one week to go until the Crete Marathon, so now it's taper time! No more long runs for a week, just nice easy runs, maybe to get an icecream. This will be my first race on Crete and indeed my first race outside NZ! It should be a big fun day out, and I'm really looking forward to see how the races are done here.
Run to the Malaxa radio towers
มุมมอง 34ปีที่แล้ว
Today I hooked up with Helen from Crete Running, Betty (the cute wee dog) and Nikola, and we ran up to the radio towers on top of the hill behind Chania. It was a stunning winter's day and we were rewarded with excellent views over the city, Suda Bay and the mountains. It's a long climb but so worth it, and super easy when you have such lovely company.
Searching for snow
มุมมอง 25ปีที่แล้ว
We finally had a hint of winter here on Crete. So while I still had a rental car, I decided to go for the run and see if I could find some snow. The road was jut a 4-wheel drive track leading up into the mountains, so nice and easy to follow - until things started to go a bit wrong.
Last run of 2022
มุมมอง 28ปีที่แล้ว
My last run for 2022 was a nice easy 10km recovery run. Two days before I ran a marathon - for the hell of it out to a famous beach and back. So this run was just nice and easy. I hope 2023 is a good year for everyone and you can get out and enjoy a bit of life.
Theriso Gorge
มุมมอง 412 ปีที่แล้ว
I went for a wee 34km run up to the top of Theriso Gorge to see what there is to see. Well, it was lovely! I'll certainly be back once my quads have recovered from 15kms of solid downhill running.
A little Malaxa magic
มุมมอง 1162 ปีที่แล้ว
The ever lovely Helen from Crete Running took a few of us out into the hills behind Chania for a wee evening run. It was a lovely easy paced run, vising a spring, and three churches. Lots of lovely people to chat with along the way, goats, the occasional dog and owner, and as much views as you could ever want. Thanks to Helen and everyone for a lovely evening run. groups/creterunning

มุมมอง 2012 ปีที่แล้ว
This is my last WUU2K. The race I have come to know and love is now on the other side of the world. I moved to Crete to help my wife care for her mother in her old age, so now instead of dodging puddles, I'm dodging goats. This was a special day, with fantastic weather - just the day we all needed after the last couple of years. To everyone involved, thank you so much for helping make such a sp...

Tip Track Marathon 2021
มุมมอง 1693 ปีที่แล้ว
Six lung and leg busting laps, 3.5kms of climbing then 3.5kms descending, 6 times to give 42kms. The Tip Track is steep and rocky and not at all easy to run on. One trip can really mess up your day. I've only ever managed to do three laps = 21kms (or a 'fun run'). This year I wanted to go the full distance. But it would be a big ask.

First marathon of 2021
มุมมอง 733 ปีที่แล้ว
I'm starting the building phase of the running year, so I went out for a wee marathon over the weekend to see how that would go. Things went reasonably well. I'm still pretty tired and it wasn't very fast. But it was a lovely run, right up until it started raining of course. My body seemed to come through it ok in the end though. So let's see if I can do it again next weekend. ;-)

Yeah it felt good passing people on that first hill. Not so good when they passed me just before the finish line 🙂 And running through the Old Town was interesting - that end of the course just wasn't marked out or anything and it was pretty chaotic. But it was also kinda fun. Loads of tourists cheering and stepping out of your way so they don't get sweated on. My biggest problem at that point was bumping into people from the local running club who called out encouragement to keep running - so I had to keep running until they were out of sight ;-) Still, it was a good day out. Now i just need to train up for the WUU2K replacement race in October ;)

This was a 62km race, with almost 3000 meters of elevation gain on technical trails. So not for the faint hearted 🙂 But it was a super-fun challenge, and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to give it a go. This year was a very tough race because of my IT band syndrome. But thankfully as a result of this race, I found out how to fix it and I've not had any issues with it since. I'll miss running this race every year. It was always my 'A' race. Keep an eye out for the next installment - my first race on Crete - The Crete Marathon, in May.

    • @littleoldmanrunning105
      @littleoldmanrunning105 ปีที่แล้ว

@@nylunch IT band syndrome sucks huh? How I fixed mine was a mix of things. I worked on the tightness in my piroformas muscle (a small muscle towards the top of your glute region) by rolling on a hard ball. I also focused a lot on fixing knots and tightness in my quads and hamstrings. (this will hurt!) As an example - I would foam roll my quads for a few minutes to warm the muscle up a bit. Then put my full weight on the muscle with the foam roller focused on any tight spots. Then I would articulate the muscle - bend your leg back and forth. It's not fun. 🙂 Then I use a rolling pin (don't tell my wife!) to rub down the muscle a bit. After that, do a few light squats and move the muscles around a bit. It took a couple of weeks to fix the issues, but I've not had a problem with IT band syndrome since. I do similar stuff to my calves as well to try and fix cramping issues. Well normally I do. I neglected doing this for a while before my last marathon and paid the price for it. So now I'm back to being more diligent with caring for my legs. I hope that helps. let me know how you get on.

Great video! It's great to see my generation of runners pushing hard! As a road marathoner for the past 5 years, I'm always looking for new tips on getting stronger. This post is very inspirational. As a fellow TH-camr, I love sharing my experiences and knowledge as well. I know how much goes into these videos! Keep posting - I just subscribed!
