Mickey’s voice still holds up after all these decades. And the band they have now is tight and puts on a great live show. All that being said, (and at the risk of sounding critical, because I don’t really want to be), this young lady seems very unsure of herself. Not sure how long she’s been with Starship now, but the last time I saw Starship live was five or six years ago and Stephanie was singing with them. Unfortunately, this young lady lacks the charisma, stage presence, performance acumen, confidence and vocal talent that Stephanie had with this band. I don’t know what positive or negative things occurred that caused Stephanie’s exit from the band; but this young lady, though lovely and who appears to be a decent singer, isn’t a comparable replacement for Stephanie Calvert. Perhaps she’s too new and is still learning how the band interacts during performances and her place in the mix. Perhaps that will get better over time and after many more performances. But based on this video, I will say that if I were to see Starship live now, I would greatly miss Stephanie’s contribution to the band. She used to get standing ovations during “Somebody to Love” and “White Rabbit”…before she’d even finish with the song. She was so good. I wonder if those standing ovations are still occurring during those songs. Perhaps Stephanie can return to Starship someday. Or perhaps that’s akin to hoping for Dennis DeYoung to return to Styx or Steve Perry to return to Journey. Maybe it just isn’t ever going to happen again. At least I was able to see Starship several times with Stephanie Calvert belting out the tunes.
