ALDC 2024 - "autospeleothem"
A level I made for SMW Central's Automatic Level Design Contest, 2024. This one wasn't too planned I was just having fun making a "Mario moving machine" with intricate movements.
Some notes:
- turn block bridges can push Mario through solid tiles, used a couple times to shove Mario
- springboard/bean wrapping/zipping is used, which is the quickest way move Mario vertically
- there's an "eat-cancel" of the disco shell as soon as blue Yoshi grows up to neutralize it (the timing on that was a happy accident so I had to use it)
- Mario is facing backwards most of the time in this, but kicking a flopping fish will make Mario turn around
- I tried my damnedest to get a 50 there at the end, too tricky

The gimmick of this one is "Mario has autorun enabled" which, if you've played old-school shooter games, means if you hold run you now slow down; the functionality of the X and Y buttons are inverted in this level. In the second section the song is "We're The Devils" from Twintris.
Kuso LDC 2023 - "Low Rider"

Level I made for the Kuso level design contest, this one is built around a glitched Yoshi state you can end up in when you beat a boss in the level slot for Sunken Ghost Ship in vanilla. The conditions are tricky to set-up usually so here it's induced with some code.

I don't know either. idol prompted me to make a level "inspired by" the Simpsons, and I guess this came out. Made in 90 minutes in the middle of the night.

The sprites section on SMW Central has so many great and wonderful creatures for us to use, including this one, which I got blessed with during a round where we had to hit the "Show Random" button over there and make a level with the result. Again made in 90 minutes.

A level contributed to Effortworld, where each level was made during a 1 hour design session (though this one I did in ~15 minutes as I joined late).     nice varied jank goldberg machine i particularly like the use of layer 2 and showing off how inaccurate the hammer bro and castle block hitboxes are, and i didn't even know about that trick where the blue yoshi apparently disarmed the disco shell there were definitely some parts where i wasn't sure what you were going to do next (fun!) so i wonder what it's like for a vanilla/casual player

      The disco is neutralized by an eat-cancel as soon as yoshi grows up making it lose interaction.

    Honestly glad this got 4th, who knew all that you could do with P-speed? Retaining it in water, being able to keep it while waiting for a timed platform to move, and the star-struck stone blocks that are cleverly used. Alongside just having lots of great setups and fun gameplay. Also considering I was going about the entries anonymised, I thought that you were definitely one of the authors, but I was surprised when I found out that Alex was in on it! GG to the two of you!
