It seems Ijaw group is not a homogenous group. Any anthropologist in the house can educate me. Thanks
If you are a slave and you break away from your slave master, with some people, does that make you the father of those people? The answer is NO! Those people will still be who they were. Ibani people. It was slave trade that made the Ibanis to start speaking Igbo, because of the mixture with the Igbo slaves.
Pls, Jaja did not break away frm his master. He was enculturated, adopted. He became a son, with equal rights lik a biological child. Dat's wot gave him d right 2bcom king. Simple He left Bonny, along with 14 War Canoe Houses. Diz were not Igbos. They were IBANI ppl

I'm still asking;,Is Ijaw an ethnic group (tribe)or a federation? If Ijaw is an ethnic group or tribe, why is it that it is made up of people with different languages and cultures, namely ogbia, Engenni,Epie, Igbo, Isoko, Urhobo,Abureni,Abua,Odual. Etc? We were taught that ethnic group is a people who speaks the same language as a mother tongue. If Ijaw is a federation, who is the president of Ijaw federation, who are the mayors of different ethnic groups of Ijaw federation?
Ijaw is an ethnic group in case you don't know even within yoruba and igbo there are different languages and dialects same goes to ijaw. There is no tribe in Nigeria where everyone is from one place
@@americaandrussia9688 Igbo is one language, there is no part of Igboland that does not speak Igbo as their native language, if there are mention them. Infact it is their language that identifies them as Ndị Igbo. If Ijaw is a federation then it should be made known publicly, there is no need for hiding anything.
@@ndubuisiezeoye2099You sound stupid. Someone who speaks Wawa dialect will find it hard to understand someone from Ngwa. The difference is that you have a central standard dialect. We do not.
@@ndubuisiezeoye2099and some of those you listed are considered dialects of Ijaw, the vast majority of what you listed are just other language Ijaw speak. My god you people on here are so mentally handicapped
Please don't be ignorant. All you mentioned are tribes and not Ijaws. This are minority tribes living close to the Ijaws. The word Ijaw is a corrupted name of IZON. Ijaw as no meaning our language. Izon means truth, original. The Izon tribe had sub groups or clans as a result of migrations by our forefathers. Sub groups includes Kalabari, Okrika, Nembe, Ibani and others. As someone from Bayelsa when this sub groups speaks I understand most of them even though not 100% but do you know that I can't understand any word from the Ogbias, Epie- Atissa people of Bayelsa state because they are not of IZON origin but in same state. So not everyone from Bayelsa state are IZONs or what people call Ijaw. The King said the founders of Bonny are from Okoloba an IZON village in present day Bomadi LGA of Delta state. It was slave trade that brought Igbos to Bonny land. The Bonny people ( IZONS) bought a good number of Igbo slaves for the inhuman trade but fortunately some slaves were freed and assimilated into the Bonny community like Jaja who later became a prominent chief and later left Bonny with some Bonny chiefs to found Opobo town. Igbo language dominated the IZON dialect called IBANI. So in a nutshell the Bonny and Opobo towns are a mixture of IZONS and IGBOS. Igbos don't behave like the Fulanis laying claim to every part of Northern Nigeria.
A very nice and informative video, people need to watch this
Beautiful. Thank You.
On the first Okoloba was mentioned by the King? The document I have seen said that Okoloba was one of the Igbo name for Bonny? So where did Okoloma come from? The king also said that Ijaw has different ethnic nationalities, hence Ogbia, epie, atissa, egginie, obolo (andoni),oblum, Kugbo, etc who do not speak Ijaws are Ijaws? So Ijaws is not an ethic group but a political union for resource control? Ok?
You sound foolish as usual. Which document, written by who? Okoloba is different from Okoloama. Someone who knew Bonny history would have known this. Ijaw is a cultural group, and some of the groups you mentioned still speak Ijaw languages so you can stop lying. And the ones who don't speak creolized languages or specfic dialects, which still have links to Ijaw. Please take your confusion elsewhere, please and thank you.

IS OPOBO REALLY IJAW OR IGBO? This article is not based on historical tales but facts. History in Nigeria has been proven to be written from sentimental minds and therefore not accurate. Opobo is one of the Igbo speaking tribes of Rivers State, but identities as a part of the Ijaw ethnic group. Now the question is why does an Ijaw group (Opobo) speak Igbo as a first language? According to some historians: Opobo was an Ijaw (Ibani) speaking tribe before they broke away from Bonny. Opobo and Bonny became Igbo speaking because of high Igbo influence via trade, slavery and intermarriage. Infact another source claims that the people decided to hide their native language and adopt that of the slaves. According to him, the native language was reserved for coded communications between freeborns. Now if these words were to be true, then it means that Opobo ancestors, though mixed are majorly ex Igbo slaves who didn't speak Ibani because they were not free born. Experience has taught us that slaves are acculturated into the lifestyle of their masters as we can see from the black Americans, British colonies and former subjects of the Roman empire. Hosts don't lose their language and culture to migrants, except by conquest. And in Bonny and Opobo, the Igbos were not the conquerors, but salesmen and slaves. And salesmen need to familiarize themselves with the language of the host Communities in order to make good sales. Did slavery change the language from Ijaw to Igbo? Opobo speaks a dialect that is similar to Ndoki. But the slaves were definitely not Ndoki people. Most of the slaves were from the hinterland and central Igbo region. If slavery really influenced Opobo's language, they should be speaking a central Igbo dialect and not the one they speak now. Nwaotam, one of Opobo's biggest masquerades also came from Ndoki. So I ask again. IS OPOBO REALLY IJAW OR IGBO? #Papajeph
U heard d king clearly in dis video say dat Bonny was founded by Ijaws. Ppl frm Okoloba in WESTERN IJAW founded Bonny wich they called OKOLOMA. D king didn't mention anything about Igbo in dis video. I guess u know more dan d king. Maybe u know d history better dan d king. U can go 2 Bonny/Opobo & tell dem dat they don't know their history. Dat u a total stranger knows their history more dan dem. If Ibani is Igbo y d Ibani dialect of Ijaw language, y d culture, masquerades, names & titles of Ijaw? Was it enforced on dem? Wen? After Nigeran civil war? If so how com Jubo Jubogha of Opobo wich was recorded centuries b4 d Nigeran civil war has no Igbo name & history has it dat he was bought as a slave & ENCULTURATED in2 Ijaw society. Meaning as at d time JAJA was bought as a slave, IBANI was IJAW. So if u say it was originally Igbo, wen did it change 2bcom Ijaw 4 Jaja 2b bought & enculturated & made an Ijaw man? If u talk about Nwaotam, also remember EKPE MASQUERADE wich is of EFIK/IBIBIO origin but 2day practiced by Igbos in Abriba & Arochukwu. Does d Ekpe cult/masquerade borrowed frm IBIBIO make d Igbos in Abia 2bcom IBIBIO/Efik? Search TH-cam : "HISTORY OF NWAOTAM IN OPOBO".... U will see d video dat chronicles how Nwaotam was borrowed frm Ndoki tru Azumini just recently, barely 100yrs ago, in d 1940s or so. Nwaotam is a borrowed culture frm Ndoki. It doesn't make Ibani(Bonny/Opobo) Igbo
@@Blink4army7stay8 what does okoloma mean in ijaw? Is okoloma an ijaw word?
@@charlesagain OKOLO means CURLEW. It's d name of a bird 🐦. Dat particular bird was in abundance on d Island wen d founders arrived so they called d place OKOLO AMA meaning CURLEW TOWN or TOWN of CURLEWS
@@Blink4army7stay8 Okolo Ama in Igbo means Okolo's place. Like you said, Ama can mean town in Igbo too it depends on the context. What you have refused to accept is that lots of Igbos settled in Bonny during the slave trade and later during the oil palm trade. It's not hard to find out. It's a very documented history. No one forced Igbo language on you. It was the language of the settlers that settled in it. Ijaw people were very scanty in number but they(Ijaws) were the original settlers in that land. But later Igbos came and mixed up and came with their language and culture and Igbo names. The two have mixed up together to evolve a unique culture which is a mix of both ijaw and Igbo culture. You cannot erase Igbo from Bonny and Opobo because most of the people are descended from Igbos mixed with Ijaws too. Note, IT IS NOT IGBO LAND. No, it is not. But it has Igbo influence and that Igbo influence makes it unique and different to other pure Ijaw settlements in Bayelsa and Ondo and Delta state. I am trying to have an intelligent discussion with you. please no abuse. Make it civil. Thank you
@@Blink4army7stay8 There are several instances of places with Greek language/culture or Italian language/culture today outside Greece and Italy. For eg Turkey has very huge Greek cultural influence but that does not make Turkey Greek land. But nobody is denying that thousands of Greeks settled in current Turkey. There are Italian speaking Cantons or areas in Switzerland today. See, any ethnic group always have mixed culture for the people at the boundary of the ethnic group. The people at the boundary mix up with other ethnic groups more easily than the ones settled in the hinterland. Ijaws share boundary with Igbo speaking cultures and that mixture is natural. There are Igala people in Anambra today, they still speak their language after many centuries. Igbo language has not been able to kill off their culture. Opobo history is very recent(19th century) and if you understand this, you will know that its too early to have lost your language to Igbo influence in such a short space of time. Igbo is widely spoken in those areas because Igbos settled in it and mixed up with the indigenous Ibanis. That's lovely and cute. Don't fight it instead embrace both because that's what you really are.

The interpreter is adding spices to the words of the Eze Aguleri, thereby distorting some information....
Please I came across this information. I will like you to clear the contraction between the two claims by the two researchers. www.independent.co.uk/news/science/worlds-most-ancient-race-traced-in-dna-study-1677113.html
There are some inconsistencies in Sarah Tishkoff study which remains the flagship DNA public article. 1) There is no group named Lemande used to disguise Yoruba having the oldest Niger Congo ethnolinguistic family DNA. This also swung the study in favor of Southern Africa Pygmies against Central African Pygmies . 2) It has been ascertained Yoruba, the first full sized human group, and San, the first small sized humans (Pygmies) diverged 87,000yrs ago +/-25kya. The belief is the mitochondria Eve had two daughters - one full size the other pgymy, but was Eve pgymy or full sized?
Thanks for posting this. It is very informative. Peace blessings and wisdom brothers
