I loved that they were able to find one another again but I can't escape my fear that the James of the Royal Navy is not the James of the Captain Flint legacy. I doubt that the former had ever been required to kill anyone, where the latter had killed innumerable people, including Thomas' father. Is Captain Flint still the idealist that Lt. James McGraw was? Do the the two men, when they meet on the plantation, still share the same philosophy and outlook on life?

Ironically, although the relationship between Thomas Hamilton and James McGraw was a more important relationship than that of Thomas and his wife, Miranda, the photos of James' amused grins are those made in connection with Miranda's early and successful sexual overtures toward him (James). Those overtures were made before Thomas and James established their relationship. The grins, no matter what produced them, are adorable..

I just realized that the straw hats are his first friends that are his age. There were no kids in the Germa kingdom and there weren’t any other kids working at the Baratie. Only chance he’d have to interact with kids his age would be when he’s getting groceries or maybe costumers. But I have a feeling that never turned into friendship
