Ernie Els made some interesting comments...and Hank responds on The Hank Haney Podcast (9/26)
Hank discusses Rory McIlroy's recent performances and how he thinks Rory can improve. He responds to comments made by Ernie Els, who criticized Rory's game saying that he needs to hit softer cut shots with his short irons. Hank disagrees with this advice and believes that Rory should focus on developing all nine shots in his golf swing, like Tiger Woods did during his prime. Distance control is paramount. I always told people that if you can hit 4 clubs to the same number, whether it be 150 or 115 yards etc., you're a wonderful ball striker. I personally have done this from 97 yards from 60° to 9 iron, hitting the number on the dot over 80% of the time. So I agree, distance control is usually a great indicator of your swing mechanics, and your feel.

Rory's caddie's his good mate and there is no way that guy is going to "talk him out" of a bad decision. Has its benefits having your good friend on the bag, but disadvantages too. Agree though that Rory does make rash and bad decisions and it can cost him

Great stuff. I've listened to some teaching pros say swing it slower but make better contact. I've also heard a thousand different things about creating club head speed, TH-cam probably does more harm than good. I remember hearing Jordan Spieth, in the Netflix show "Full Swing", ask Tom Kim "What do you do if you want to hit it further?" Tom Kim responded by saying "I swing it faster." Perhaps all the swing thoughts do nothing but slow the golfer's swing down and perhaps we would do better to just "swing it faster."

Couldn’t disagree more regarding your average player. You’re assuming a player has a minimum threshold of skills with putting, chipping, wedge and approach shots. If the average player (let’s just say 15hcp) went to a pro and the pro suggested he focus on distance gains vs eliminating 3 putts, getting out of bunkers, etc. that is the worst ROI (Return on Investment). If you’re playing well and have a solid game all around that’s one thing, but other wise statistically folks that can’t putt, hit fairways or get up and down would be way better served otherwise. Going way back I remember you stating with juniors swing as hard as you can and we can fix the swing later. How many players % wise do you know that don’t have swing flaws as is are not in need of fixing their swing without trying to come out of their shoes? Lastly just because someone has done something professionally (take any profession) does not make it the gospel. A vast majority of the golfers out there are poorly served by this advise with most just hitting further offline. We’re not talking about professionals or top amateurs. I’m sorry, but I think this advice for most is clueless.

I used to be able to hit it 230. And I've hit it 275 once. I can hit it 200 now. But I'm a better player now. I think distance with the high lofted clubs is what is most important. The best players can crush short irons.

I'm 60 and learned to drop the club into the slot. I'm consistently driving 250-260 and my scores have dropped dramatically. Golf is a MUCH MUCH easier game when you have a wedge in your hand for your second or third shot.

I’m torn on this one. Distance is great, but if your short game sucks, what is the point? Perfect example, I am not a long hitter off the tee. I only carry my driver about 200 or 225 yards, but my short game is top notch. My friend on the other hand carries his driver 300 yards consistently, but his short game is terrible. He has never beaten me in a match in all the years we’ve played. That’s just my .02 though. Cheers!

I'm still playing of single digits at almost 70, but without doubt I've lost 30-40 yards of the tee in the last few years. I rely on being accurate, my average drive is now around 235 yards, i now carry 5 - 7 and 9 woods. No longer carry 2 - 3 and 4 irons, I practice only shots from 100 yards in, and spend a few hours every week on the practice green, chipping, pitching, bunker shots, and putting.

Makes sense to me. I’m about a 10hcp. I’ve been playing seriously for just over a year. Luckily, I’m a long hitter. My driver is often a disaster but my irons go pretty well. I’ve only used blades to ensure I develop proper technique. No tech to make me lazy, really practicing my technique. I practice daily. With my bladed 9 iron, I hit about 150 yards so am pretty accurate up to 230 yards with my irons. My club pro said my ceiling is scratch simply because I’m lucky enough to have distance. If I played with cavity backs or game improvement irons, it’d be easier….but I’m addicted to the feeling of puring my Mizuno’s.

@@sabianmcleod For the last 17 years or so the pros only think about hitting it 300 yards no matter where the ball ends up, then they will deal with it on the next shot, I'd rather be in the fairway 260 than in the ruf at 300.

  • @countrystrength4701

This is misleading advice, most people swing too fast (for them) to be able to control it and keep it in play. I play with old fuckers all time that shoot low 80s and can barely hit it 180. Yes I agree that potential is higher with higher club head speed, but none of that matters if the ball is sprayed everywhere but the fairway. Shit man today I shot 91, best score yet, I half swung every single shot. I could shave easily 5 strokes off by putting better (too many 3 and 4 putts) and not duffing and topping a few shots (5 bad shots). Distance only counts when it's in play. Scratch golfers hit 260 yd drives yes, but in play, and they can approach, chip, and putt very well!! I've played with too many guys that can whack the ball really far (240 plus) and shoot 100 or more because they spray it everywhere and can't chip or putt. Your advice isn't wrong in theory, but you're leading people down a path of lots of frustration with lots of lost balls.. 250 yard drives have to be hit just right to stay in play. Get lessons, learn to hit the ball correctly, then worry about speed later! It's just bad advice to worry about speed first and then contact later, it is putting the cart before the horse.

My advice is superior for the average weekend / Amateur mid to high handicap golfer, which is 99% of golfers. And fyi, Rory Mclroy agrees with what I’m saying more that this guy if you want to argue from authority. Most of the time, mid to high handicaps lose strokes from over swinging or playing shots they can’t hit. If you can practice enough to keep fast swings in play, go for it, otherwise you’re going to have a bad time. Play shots you can hit, keep the ball in play, focus on short game.

2023 PGA tour average carry distance for a 7 iron was 176 yards with a 92mph club speed. Get to 90mph with a 7I, be accurate with every club and become excellent from within 50 yards and you actually have the potential.

I just bought some Callaway big bertha 2023 irons. I doubted myself after this podcast whether i did the right thing because i paid a big chunk of change. But i hit my seven iron higher than my 2002 big Berthas and 15 yards farther. And i gave my seven iron at the driving range to a guy hitting next to me He was hitting it like his 6 iron and without as much effort and the same height as his 7 iron. So the technology has come a long way since 20 years ago. I'm getting higher ball flight with my seven than my 2002 big berthas with less effort and 15 yards farther.i understand your perspective but obviously your gonna hit the clubs before you buy them and it's not gonna be just on a simulator. Your gonna see if and your gonna feel it and your gonna know you want those clubs more than your old clubs.
