Edward Hitchcock and the Geology of Cape Cod and the Islands
Edward Hitchcock's name is often associated with western Massachusetts where he lived and with Amherst College where he taught for nearly 40 years. But early in his career he became interested in southeastern Massachusetts and played a pioneering role in unraveling the geological history of Cape Cod and the Islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. His insights from that region led him to become the first American geologist to embrace the theory of continental glaciation.
