To be fair, Might guy was talented. He can use jutsu unlike his father and has a big chakra reserve, he just didn't want to use that and follow on the steps of his dad. He could 100% be a jonin on the level of the other, he just doesn't feel like it.

I fully believe that the only reason Might Dai/Guy/Lee were taken down/not elevated to protagonist hero success is not because they hadn't reached a far enough level or that nature is better than nurture, but because by being a product of nurture they live by a code of only using their power in the act of protecting others, not to kill others. Even when Might Guy used the 8 gates technique he didn't go for Madara's head even though he knew there was no way Madara was going to be able to dodge or deflect his attack. This is why they win in the debate over nature vs nurture.
