The beginning of Sonic Adventure is really well done
I wanted to talk about Sonic Adventure, and this seemed like a fun little topic to use. I also wanted to test out some audio changes!
Apologies that this video is so short, but I just finished the Elden Ring dlc and the next video will be much longer (hopefully). A lot less busy now too so videos should be released much sooner now. Thanks for reading this.

For what it's worth, Sonic Adventure does have a straight up stop in place and "learn about homing attack chaining!" Moment. In Sky Deck, there are two separate monitors you can stop and talk to in the stage which tell you how to do a homing attack chain on some spinners. I believe red mountain has a monitor for this as well in act 1, but not in every version of the game

I appreciate your candor and hope you have even more fun on your journey into horror gaming! That said, if I might offer some feedback on the video itself: I’d really recommend tightening things up. The script feels like a rabbit running all over the place ATM, and the delivery seems a bit out of sync at times with what it sounds like the line calls for. Perfectly reasonable things to be grappling with this early into posting on YT, but I figure it’s worth saying. Best of luck!

It is arguably my favorite Silent Hill game because all of the psychological horror elements in it center around being a girl in a violent world and that hits close to home. I want to talk about all my favorite things but those are spoilers so I just hope other people pick up the title or force Konami to stop making mobile phone games and re-master Silent Hill 1 - 3. Good video! As somebody who is more versed in horror cinema (though with plenty a gap to fill), it was nice seeing somebody with an open mind try out horror video games. The fact that in horror games you are directly responsible for surviving through the inrushing ordeal makes them more effective than horror films, at least to me. Honestly, it is not the scares that attract me to horror films: sometimes it is the story, other times it is akin to watching an action movie, anticipating the action scenes or, in this case, the kills, as well as what way will the protagonist find to survive all this (even if survival is not a given in those kinds of films). With horror games, even when I know what is coming, it is much more easier to instill fear inside me. Regarding recommendations, I am not that versed in horror video games, but I could still recommend some. You mentioned that you found interesting how in Haunting Grounds you could not fight: a very popular game where fighting is not an option is Outlast (along with its sequel). Both games are really good and indeed make you the player in a mean, nasty 2000s-2010s horror flick. They also scratch my itch of games fleshing out their worlds more: aside from the story, there are plenty of notes to make the game world more tangible. Another very popular games you cannot fight is SCP: Containment Breach. Basically, you have to navigate through a randomly generated maze full of things than can easily kill you. The bland graphics really contribute to the fear factor, conveying hopelessness and being lost. Furthermore, like with Haunting Grounds, you lack any safe space, as enemies can appear at any time. SCP-106 in particular is one of the scariest video game enemies, personally. You also mentioned you would like to try something different than the games in the video. In this regard, I can recommend some games can have horror elements, yet mix them with plenty of action elements. One such game, Doom 3 is one of my favourite games ever! The atmosphere is really thick, the sound design is amazing, the enemies pose a threat and even the less impressive sounding gun sounds contribute to the atmosphere. At the same time, the player character is not a pushover and is unburdened by a weapon limit, so you face your fears quite head-on. Moreover, the way audio logs and in-game screens work is very immersive and the world of the game gets fleshed out quite well. The game is becoming 20 years old this year, but the visuals remain great! Even though Dead Space shares vibes with Doom 3 and retains its heads-on approach of facing your fears, it is definitely its own thing, even being somewhat scarier. I have not played the remake, that said the original is not dated at all. All mainline games maintain a great atmosphere, accompanied by really fleshed-out world and good gameplay. As good as the first one is, Dead Space 2 is my favourite in the series and among my favourite games ever! What makes it stand out to me is how one-take it feels: you go from level to level without any loading screen (those appear only if you die), so you always feel glued to the character, even during the scripted set pieces where spectacle overrides control of your character. Dead Space 3 is worth playing too. The bigger shift to action feels like a natural progression based on the preceding games; my complaints mostly lay with the combat and how in single-player way too many games seemed to do too little damage against much tougher enemies. It remains a very technically impressive game: you travel through space, go to planets without going through any loading screens and once again you feel like you are always with Isaac, as cuts between scenes are quite minimal, provided of course you do not die. Lastly, I can recommend the F.E.A.R. series. F.E.A.R. 1 and Extraction Point (but partly Perseus Mandate) not only provide great action, including slowing down time, but the horror atmosphere is really well executed. It feels like a mix between action and J-Horror and this mix keeps gameplay fresh throughout. With 2 and 3 the horror is greatly reduced, yet this does not mean they should be avoided all together, as they provide fun campaigns. 3 especially was a surprise for me how much I enjoyed it: while it is apparent the development process surrounding it was quite chaotic and unpleasant for the developers, at least their work did not go totally to waste, since the gameplay is extremely fun, especially the further you level up your character. Monolith, the developers behind the first 2 F.E.A.R. games, also created Condemned: Criminal Origins - a great horror title with welcome investigative elements, in addition having heavy Seven vibes. In this action vein, I am currently playing The Suffering and Alone in the Dark 2008. I am still quite in the beginning with these games, yet the latter especially surprised me with how ambitious it is, despite its bad reputation. The gameplay variety, fire propagation mechanics as fun as Far Cry 2, the way your jacket is your inventory screen (a feature later implemented in Outlast II), how each level is structured like an episode of a TV series, the Uncharted-esque climbing moments, the great soundtrack starring The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices and others - for all its shortcomings, it is still a game worth checking out. Finally, two final titles (and two of my favourite games) I could recommend are The Evil Within (amazing mixture of influences) and Alien: Isolation (as an Alien fan, it is incredible how well it makes you feel like you are playing the first film; has a female protagonist as well, if you are itching for that).

Making the character you play as a woman in a horror game with a lot of men who will torment any woman they see is a genius move for a horror game since the player will feel even worse for failing because the character won't just get ended right away but used by the enemies. This is probably the best way to make the player not want to lose or get caught.

Imo, it's the best and most fun in the series. Since you liked Haunting Ground, I also would recommend Rule of Rose. It's an amazing game as well with a beautiful and tragic story. The algorithm blessed me on this day! I clicked because I'm a huge fan of Haunting Ground, and I really enjoy this concept you have of trying to "first play" horror games. I'm going to subscribe for more of those. I see in your description box you asked for recommendations, so here are some of mine (and why): The Fatal Frame series: This is on par with Haunting Ground/Rule of Rose for cult classic but it's gotten more popular over time. Survival horror but in a Japanese setting, taking pictures of ghosts is the main mechanic. I don't want to spoil the rest. Each game is standalone, so you can pick any in theory; most fans seem to feel that the 1st one is the best one, although I'm partial to Fatal Frame 3. Forbidden Siren/Siren series: Another cult classic that got kind of forgotten over time. It's a Japanese-set game again, survival horror, but this time the main mechanic is being able to see through the enemy's eyes so that you know where you are vs. where they are. It's a tough game to be sure, it's more based on sneaking/hiding like in HG than fighting. It used pretty revolutionary tech at the time (if you're familiar with how LA Noire was made, it's a similar idea) but some people feel the graphics aged poorly. Darkwood: Slavic survival horror, in a resource management/survive as long as you can way. Beautiful game, very tough and unforgiving. I'd say you would maybe need a couple playthroughs to get the general idea before you can actually "get good" at it, but it's so worth it. A true horror gem in my book. Has a top-down viewpoint like Hotline Miami, easy to play hard to learn. World of Horror: An 8bit indie project that combines Junji Ito/body horror aesthetics with eldritch horrors. I'm not sure what genre you'd call it... no playthrough will ever be identical. If you choose the generic "click and play" mode, you are assigned a random eldritch god that will essentially debuff your playthrough, and you are assigned some random murder mysteries to solve with a deadline of 7ish days. It's a point and click style game, with character stats and an insanity meter. You could also choose a game mode where you choose which god and which character to play, but I'd recommend that after your 1st "organic" playthrough. Signalis: Newest game from my recommendations, gorgeous pixelated survival horror that smashes Resident Evil with a bunch of other genres. Multiple endings, great enemies, the story will not be very clear immediately, it'll take some time, if you don't like stories where it's not very clear/obvious what's going on, it might not be for you as it's got a lot of head scratcher/interpret it as you will moments. If you want games that are very atmospheric/story based but not so much "action" or straight-up "horror" as in a Silent Hill style, I have other recs too: Fran Bow: point and click story game with scary/horror elements but no jumpscares/survival aspect. Oxenfree: side scrolling spooky game, basically paranormal events with teenagers isolated on an island. Great atmosphere and story but not "horror" exactly. Limbo + Inside: Limbo came first, Inside second but they are separate. Both atmospheric/aesthetic side scrolling platformer games with disturbing/dark elements, especially Inside is a masterclass is "show don't tell". Blasphemous: Side scrolling game more like adventure/fighting heavy with horror/religious elements. I have no mouth, and I must scream: Short point-and-click horror-themed adventure game from the 80s, based on a short story. More disturbing than anything but the author voice acts! Sorry for the novel, but I feel like you can get a huge breath of fresh air by playing horror games as a masterclass in psychology.

I think it's important to look at the sub-genres of horror. My favorite game series, Resident Evil is survival horror; and so I Silent Hill. While you might like one genre, you might hate another, but its all under the umbrella genre of horror. I'm not the biggest fan of Outlast and PT clones. I find them boring. So when I recommend Dedge, it's not so much for the scares but for the vibe that is spooky. That's is why I like horror games. Not because I'm scared but because the setting and vibe is so interesting and alluring. Now if you want true scares, the classic: Amnesia the Dark Descent or it's modern counterpart: Amnesia The Bunker are two fantastic choices. Darkwood is another game that is a truly terrifying experience. And if you want to experience the bad side of horror games (you have to see the genre at its lowest) then Agony is a top contender. That game is horrible. Nuff said.

Very good essay. I would have personally liked more details about your personal story trying these horror games. Like you start with no experience or interest in horror games then play banger after banger of horror games and ended up loving them. (where is the three arc story stucture in this? What was your inside the belly of the whale moment in this story? I would think that if you have no familiarity with genre there would have been way more friction. Like perhaps suprising things would be super scary to you or even make you put down and good game for long time or even give up on them. I guess the focus in this video was more in good recommendations and thats fair enough I enjoyed it a lot. Maybe just I would have hoped you would gone more into the personal experience and maybe with hinderances did you have about ejoying the genre so that I could show this more to my horror downplaying friends they would have more things to relate at. All in all not every journey is allways as bumpy as you would expect and this was thoroughly interesting take on this subject. thanks.
