male elk with three antlers
Title says it all. This elk was actually hit by a vehicle in Jasper National Park, and this moved his antler base to the center of his head. The next year he grew a normal 3rd year antler out of his normal left side "pedicle", but the growth for the right side was split between the center pedicle and the new right side pedicle. This resulted in a smaller, poorly-formed right antler, and a single spike antler in the middle. I watched and hoped he would shed the two outer antlers first, and thus make him look like a unicorn, but that didn't happen!

wolves in jasper 2012
มุมมอง 2K12 ปีที่แล้ว
Footage of two different wolf packs found in Jasper National Park. The first pack is the presumed Pyramid pack, and were filmed on their second visit to an elk they had killed the day before, which was a member of the group I am studying. The second pack is the Sunwapta pack, which is known more for preying on caribou in the Tonquin Valley.
"Greenie" the elk after getting killed by cougar
มุมมอง 4.4K12 ปีที่แล้ว
We had conducted an aversive conditioning chase on Greenie and "Reds" just the night before, and the last time we had seen them they were resting comfortably on this ice shelf by the river. A cougar was spotted nearby at 3am, and at first light the cougar was seen munching away on Greenie, as seen here.
Elk calf stotting
มุมมอง 2K12 ปีที่แล้ว
Stotting is when an animal is moving quickly with a gate that has all 4 feet off the ground at the same time. Adult elk very rarely do this, but calves do it quite regularly. This is the main high speed gate of mule deer.
fox goes aerial on hunt.wmv

Elk in the Canadian rockies share their habitat with a variety of herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. There are particularly complicated canine-deer relationships that go beyond elk-wolf, to include white-tailed and mule deer, caribou, and moose, but also coyotes and foxes. This video shows the hunting habits of the smallest of those canines, the red fox. Not visible in this video is the her...
wolves play.mpg
มุมมอง 2.4K13 ปีที่แล้ว
While cougars certainly hunt elk, the main predator of elk in the Canadian Rocky Mountains is the wolf. The wolves in this clip are part of the Bow Valley pack roaming the areas west of Banff, AB. These wolves exchanged distant howls for several minutes before finally meeting up with each other. They were obviously happy to see each other again. You may notice that one of the wolves is wearing ...
Magpie grooming elk with tick-damaged fur.
มุมมอง 552K13 ปีที่แล้ว
This video shows an example of mutualism between elk and magpies. I have only ever observed this behaviour in mid-February to mid/late March, so presumably the magpies are consuming winter ticks (Dermacentor albipictus) that engorge on mammal hosts at this time. Elk are habitual groomers and so don't suffer the tick damage that moose do, but the thick hair on the back of an elk's neck is diffic...
male elk bugling during rut
มุมมอง 27K13 ปีที่แล้ว
One of the most famous and impressive sounds in all of nature, the bugling of a male elk. The bugle announces the stag's presence to females, but is mostly intended to signal other stags. Audible for kilometers distance, stags up for the challenge can easily find other stags with whom they might battle for "control" of females. Top males will round up and protect dozens and dozens of females, f...
Elk females boxing
มุมมอง 1.3K13 ปีที่แล้ว
Male elk are famous for fighting during the mating season, but less seen, and thus known about, are the "boxing matches" the female elk participate in. Aggression between adult female elk is almost always related to control of point-food sources, such as the "craters" created when underlying grass is dug out from under snow, or mineral licks. There can also be man-made point food sources, such ...
Elk Chases Coyote
มุมมอง 59713 ปีที่แล้ว
While coyotes do prey on elk calves, it is nearly impossible for a single coyote to kill a healthy adult elk. Those healthy adult elk can still show some extreme variation in their opinions of coyotes, however. While most elk tend to ignore any coyotes passing through their habitat, or even resting in the vicinity of the elk herd, the most timid elk will run away from the coyote. This video sho...

It's a collar with GPS that (according to some other commenters) can also monitor and transmit vital signs. It's an important conservation tool to check on the health and location of elk populations

Amazing and THANK YOU for enriching our lives with your knowledge :) This "mutualism" is the KEY to sustainable "thriving", as opposed to "surviving"! The CONCEPT: humans are to be moderators of animals world. Animal husbandry. We get paid by facilitating deals with animals: E.g providing bees with warm, dry, spacious, safe home, we give them "currency", which they exchange with us by giving us their "currency", extra honey they produced thanks to us. By giving them extra food in the winter, they are ensured longer lives as they also don't need to heat much in warm, dry home :) This is not like stealing that, is currently done. This is business as designed by God. Animals are our PETS that, gladly repay with doing what, they are doing naturally anyway. This is how they show us their love :)
