Each episode combines humor with heartfelt discussions, offering a blend of outrageously funny moments and serious, insightful commentary. Stephen and Nick are on a continuous journey of self-discovery, learning, growing, and navigating what it means to be autistic in an allistic (non-autistic) world.
Whether you're on the spectrum yourself, know someone who is, or just want to learn more about autism from a fresh perspective, join us as we break down stereotypes, challenge misconceptions, and share the joys and challenges of being autistic. On the Spectrum is not just a podcast; it's a community for anyone interested in understanding autism beyond the clichés.

Understanding Men on Dating Apps: Debunking Stereotypes and Exploring Individuality
I don't know if I'm on the spectrum, but it shouldn't be a very complicated concept to grasp for neurotypicals that their feelings are their own responsibility. If I say something to you and you get offended, it's on you. Perceptions aren't objective. If someone's visibly lost weight and I voice this observation, some will think it's a neutral comment, some will find it rude, but some others will think it's a compliment. People fearing/feeling things and acting up don't have much to do with other people. Also, if I learned one thing from Law and Order, it is that you cannot (dis)prove intent, so is someone who means well but is unable to read the room a worse person than someone who is intentionally over-polite to the point of insincerity? Well, maybe I am on the spectrum lol
It's funny, because there's this whole idea among a lot of online spaces that it's always on the person who caused offense, even if it wasn't intended.
@Stevekixs Online space will be different than in real life in many ways because we let the edgelord within us cruise away :) I've been in academic institutions and environments a lot -- if you cannot handle difference of opinion or know how to construct and defend an argument as objectively and convincingly as possible, the argument won't survive. You have to realize the difference between an idea getting attacked vs. you as a person. A German friend who had just finished a master's in gender studies moved to Wisconsin for a PhD, where he was shocked and appalled about the style of discussion in the classroom. There was a lot of "you can't say this/that" attitude by the students but at times, even the lecturers. He ended up quitting that PhD because of the lack of freedom of speech and thought, it was leaning towards fascism with all the thought police. Conversations happen differently in Europe than in the USA between peers and people.
i agree totally, there is a place and a time for pedantics and semantics especially in a more debate like settings. But casual conversation is usually best navigated with focusing on the larger concepts rather than criticizing the method used to deliver them.
😒😒😒😒🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🤬🤬🤬
Somebody angered the neckbeard didnt they?
This might just be unfortunate timing that this popped up on my feed but this better not be in reference to Elon 😂
It's not in reference to Elon. They go more in-depth in the episode.
Does it matter really? If you are rude and abrasive, people will feel bad when they are with you and eventually leave you, or even worse, be stuck to a person who makes them feel like sh**.
It does matter
@@nicholasanderson783 Intention doesn't really mitigate consequences.
@@Blorbobaggins it does when it comes to hurting someone's feelings - If the way you come off makes them think you hate them, learning you don't actually hate them absolutely mitigates that.
I'd also point put, an explanation doesn't mean you don't apologise for upsetting someone.
@@Blorbobaggins i did not say that.
THANK you! I have the hardest time getting some people to understand this!
I have found in my life that "they" don't need to understand but we need to understand and give ourselves the grace to be the humans that we are.
@ maybe, but it would still feel better if I could **make** them understand, I just want to coexist peacefully…
And the rest of us are not obligated to give a fvck. Do you not find it concerning that for the first time in history your generation is suffering these conditions and none of you care why? Interesting that it gives you a built in excuse.
@maleitch our generation? Suffering? Sometime the why is not as important as what to do with the situation.
🏳️🌈😡😡😡
Psychometric tests are another issue, they're not designed for neurodivergent people.
So the argument against raising kids in a supportive loving environment is that if you parent them that way they wont experience enough adversity? Are parent responsible for creating adversity like there isnt any outside the home? And on your comparison to exercise, about which you dont strike me as enthusiasts, you cannot effectively grow stronger if you arent properly recovering. Not providing a supportive loving home environment is the equivalent of getting home from the gym and continuing to exercise every day. Thats crazy, and an irresponsible amount of work to subject a child to, and it wont actually make them any tougher besides maybe not trusting or liking you. Maybe you're actually complaining about overprotection and coddling, which is neither supportive nor loving which would mean you're talking completely out of your asses so i'll give you the benefit of the doubt there. If you dont think your kids will experience enough adversity if you love them, how badly should i treat them if i ever meet them btw?
Great way to over think that.
@nicholasanderson783 when you don't think I'm sure everything looks like overthinking
@@SeveralGhost sad, you immediately turn to insults when someone disagrees with you. They have a term for that in psychology.
@nicholasanderson783 is there a term for ignoring arguments and acting smug?
@SeveralGhost nope, but again you lean on insults.
Although you seem to think everyone should have an opinion.

There îs no 50 50 in real life.
That's what he said
In true, autistic fashion, I feel we are taking things a tad literally. It's just a silly mantra to true and persuade people who don't think about thinks to deeply.
trains are the best form of transportation
the phrase exists because “oh you cant be autistic, your nothing like my 5 year old nephew with autism” and comments like that. its not that big of a deal

@@TheWctman nice.
The sincerity isn’t in the words via social media through tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language. A simple text can be taken out of context.
@@ericgrosvenor67 true. But I feel like this applies to communication in general. Social media just makes it worse.
@ good point
Hello Darkness, my old friend...
Should make sure your shorts conclude with a purpose. I was intrigued at first bc the topic was relatable, then left learning nothing. If you’d put some way to overcome/face the problem then this would’ve been a satisfying short.
Thanks for the feedback!

James doesn’t seem infantilising at all. His passion for swords might be eccentric to some, but honestly not to me. For the most part he was very polite and seems level headed
That was one of my favourite moments. Autistic or not, there is nothing more lovely than someone sharing their passion. Having that much love and enthusiasm for something that you just want to share it with everyone in the world is an amazing gift, I could listen to him talking about his swords all day because his passion and enthusiasm would be palpable and infectious
They are kids. It’s your duty as a parent to inform them so they can be better suited to handle the real world. Playing mental gymnastics is setting them up for a life of misery.
Sure and more to the conversation
You're not dumb... none of this makes sense.
I know someone who is autistic and hates odder autistic people
So doing things for peope is menant to make u feel like shit and your not supposed to enjoy it? Accomodating peolle is demeaning ? Okay asshole

Whoever has the strongest muscles should empty that big trash can😂
Yeah but sometimes making someone feel special is also okay? Maybe that makes the kid really happy? Who are you to say what is good or bad for another person.
He is another person with an opinion. If you watch the full episode you can hear a fuller version of his opinion.
The problem I have is that one day that kid might realize that everyone was faking. And how shitty does it feel to be pandered to because people look down on you?
Lazy people like Nick is why we have a government and DMV’s why are we putting up with this crap!
The reason there appear to be more transgenders than there used to be is b/c they are tired of being closeted and "coming out" more. And both sides are fixated on them because they are the newest theater in the war over civil rights.
Everything conservatives believe is made up nonsense. Just like the Bible... nonsense
I wouldn't say EVERYTHING, but a lot of it is.
@@onthespectrumpod magical thinking will partially skew every belief 💯

Thank you.
As someone who's both autistic, queer and has never heard of this podcast: I feel like this is a pretty bad clip. Not in a "you suck" way, just a "what even is this" way. I genuinely cant tell what the point is intended to be. Theres no context for the opening statements, and it's vague enough that IDK if the commentary is on LGBTQ+ folk, or autistic folk. Maybe it's talking about how LGBTQ rights have had more progress than those on the spectrum? Which I don't agree with, if that's correct. There's a crazy overlap woth lgbt and autistic communities at worst, and the normalization of autism has people talking about "autistic rizz" at best. I'm far from an authoritative voice on content production. That said, I'd recommend finding more succinct exerpts to post for shorts. Hope this doesn't sound like hate. Wish you all love
Loser
Thank you. This particular clip was not made by us. It was made using a clip generator, but we also do make clips the old fashioned way as well - and we usually review them before posting any auto-generated clips. Perhaps this one was not clear. The longer conversation was about whether things are better for the LGBTQ community now vs in the past, and whether or not people were more tolerant - or just hiding their intolerance more. One of us is LGBTQ, and we frequently speak about the overlap with Autism.
Yes. you are.
Picture and picture lmfaooooo
Thanks!
Graduated in 2005, and can def say the F slur was constantly used while I was going thru school. Separately, the two pole calculations is simple. One pole is further away from the equator. Take shadow measurements at both poles (which are the same height) throughout the day and the minimum value at each location is what is compared. The one further from the equator will have a longer shadow.
Thank you for adding that info.
Just so you guys know Imane Khelif is not xy chromosome, that is what the IBA which is run by Russia claimed when they disqualified her and another female boxer via test that they both won't specify what tests they ran or the actual results. However the lab that ran testing for IBA did confirm that none of the tests they ran were chromosomal tests. Furthermore the country she lives in it is illegal to be trans so even false accusations of such could be dangerous for her.
Thank you. Yea, at the time we recorded this, USA today had posted an article saying that she was DSD. I have since learned that the chromosome thing was a lie.
I liked him so much and hope he finds The One🥰❤️
Me too.
How this video have no comments
The guy on the right isnt very smart lmao. The ancient greeks had telescopes and used them to calculate that the world was round somehow.. i think. They didnt "guesstimate"
It was Eratosthenes of Cyrene in the third century BCE. He was able to determine the shadow angle at one location when the sun was directly overhead at another, and the distance between the locations. From there he could figure out how many degrees of a circle existed between the locations (roughly 1/50 of a circle), and from there figure out the distance that 360 degrees would be. The biggest error was assuming the world is a perfect sphere, but it's actually just a little bit squashed. Absolute genius for the time though.
Thank you for adding that.
Interesting listening to you two talk.
