How to make a Penguin Christmas Ornament with Slow Stitching | Use Fabric Scraps | Holiday DIY
Join me while I make a custom christmas ornament out of leftover fabric scraps and embroidery floss. This holiday ornament of a penguin on a iceberg on a winter lake in the north pole was inspired by some of the fabric I used recently on another projects. I filmed my process of figuring out how to make this design and used basic embroidery stitches to add texture and detail to the scene.

    Would a darning stitch not make the edges of the rip stronger than even a whip stitch?

    I made some very simple pads by just cutting out 1 ft squares of flannel. I joined two pieces together by zig-zagging realy well around the edges Then I folded the left side in to the centre then the right side into the centre, whilst inserting a strip of plastic in the bottom layer. I used very thin plastic from an old raincoat. The plastic is removed for washing. Later on I made some larger wider pads for night-time. As long as I wear snug underwear they always stay in place

    • @mendingandmaking

      The wings will help reduce mess on the edges of an undergarment. The snaps(button) will keep the pad from traveling as you walk. I hope this helps!

    • @mendingandmaking
      @mendingandmaking 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ll be happy to list them. The fabric used is flannel, cotton fleece and PUL. The flannel can also be used in place of the fleece. I actually reused old flannel blankets. For the notions, all purpose thread and KAM snaps. You can also use regular sew-on metal snaps. I hope this helps!

    • @mendingandmaking
      @mendingandmaking 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It looks like the online store that I purchased the fabric is no longer online though I do see some other resources. I see that Amazon (fabric.com) actually offers Organic Cotton Fleece and PUL Fabric. JoAnn Fabric has white PUL online. I have made many pads with Flannel and it works really well.

    Why did you not put interfacing in the last one?

    • @mendingandmaking
      @mendingandmaking 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! I added craft interfacing on one side of all 3 book markers. For the last marker (quilted), I didn't think I needed interfacing for the front piece since it was thicker with all of the vertical seams from piecing it. The interfacing is use to add a little "stiffness" to the fabric. I hope this helps!

      @@mendingandmaking I sure understand that. I always say I’m going to start making items for the next Christmas, throughout the year, but it never seems to happen. I remember one Christmas when my kids were little. I was making everyone in the family homemade gifts and through the week before Christmas, I was up late every night and I finally finished. But you know what ? I gave myself no time to enjoy December by listening to Christmas music and watching my favorite Christmas movies and enjoy all the decorations. Christmas Day I cried because I felt like I missed Christmas. I didn’t have the excitement and I was wore out because I did everything in December. I said I would never do that again and haven’t. But I really need to work on things throughout the year. Lol!!! Wishing you a very Merry Christmas 🎄🎅🏼🌨🌬⛄️☃️🙏🏻

      I'm going to try this, mind you it might take me a month or two to get to it. Never enough craft time. I have so much material & elastic left over from making masks. I'm pretty sure I can sew this. I'm a crocheter and a friend just asked me yesterday if I'd make a bag holder. I'd rather sew one than crochet one to use up material. The only part I might be confused on (of course) is the part that the video stopped on. Am I cutting the hem stitching on that 3/4" or so to create the opening for the straps? And then stitch/back stitch on each side to secure? I get into my own head sometimes. Thanks for a great video.
